How to Press Seams to One Side and Open

- Easier than ever, this method for pressing seams open makes light work of the process. To begin with I share my secret tool for pressing success that allows me to use steam, move my iron sideways so it does the work, and even have bias edges! Then I show the step that makes for easy, crisply pressed open seams.
To be clear, I press my seams to one side throughout my quilting because I like the seams nesting to match (I rarely pin), I like the dimensions that the seams give to the quilt, I can stitch in the ditch if desired, if the stitches break, the batting won't show, and if the stitches do break (anything on bias is susceptible no matter which way it is pressed), it is easier to repair.
Every now and then, I need to press seams open to reduce bulk. Now I have a method that makes it easy and successful.
I hope you enjoy your quilting even more! QuiltwithMarciBaker.com
Pressing on flannel is genius! Thanks for the tip!
You're so welcome!
Flannel!!! Great idea which I will do. Just watched Mary’s live today where she mentioned the purple strips, talking to you and the 60° product. Perfect solution! (I subscribed).
Using an emery board instead of your finger is another idea that works well
Thank you! I don’t like pressing seams open because of having the iron so near my fingers. Your tip will open up an unlimited amount of patterns to me. 😄
Glad it was helpful!
You can hold a regular cereal spoon and use the bowl to open the seams - this can keep your fingers away from the iron. 😊
🥰😲🥰
Good to know you like it!
