My buddy had all his gear stolen years ago. Amp, 3 fenders Tele and 2 strats. Thanks to that law Daddy’s Junkie Music in Dedham Ma.had good news for him. He got everything back.
That Tempe Guitar Center is what every guitar center needs to look like if they want to be successful. I tried to sell a guitar at that location, but they turned it down because it had some dings and that they were pickier with their used inventory than other locations. It shows because their used gear is clean and well set up. The Scottsdale one is the opposite and has used inventory with rusted hardware, new guitars with unplayable setups, and any guitar over $500 locked away. They need some consistency between stores!
Thanks for saying what a lot of us are thinking about the Ultra II series. I was the one who Super-chatted about getting a Player II series at Guitar Center and the fact of the matter is, there isn't $1500+ more features or craftsmanship in an Ultra than what I paid for a Player II.
My Black Friday consisted of buying parts for my FIRST guitar that I am putting together myself. I am building a 54 Fender Esquire, either a Jeff beck replica, but NOT as heavily reliced or just a lightly relic 54 Esquire, without the arm and back side contours. Thanks in part to you Phil, for giving me the confidence to do my own work! Your podcast and videos, DO help! So thank you from my heart!

Phil, something has changed on your youtube settings. I have youtube premium, which allows for background playback. This has always allowed me to listen to your podcast while i'm out walking, with my phone in my pocket. Recently that changed...but ONLY on your podcast. Now it pauses every couple of minutes...I have to pull my phone out of my pocket to get it to start again. All my other podcasts behave normally. I did some research, and it looks like that individual channels can set background playback on or off. You might want to check.
All you really need to know is sellers lose, buyers win ! but like you put it, its a question of convenience for sellers. either your willing to sell cause your desperate for fast cash, or impatient about buying an other guitar and don't have the full amount and willing to sacrifice , lose equity value for your impatience to obtain it...
There is a another way to win at GC too. Trade in during their Black Friday sale, 15% off new items up $1k off (usually it's 20% every year though). So then if you get 60% of used value, add that 15%, then also add Reverb's 10% in fees and you are 85% of your full value. There is also 10% off used sales throughout the year too. Is that extra 15% really worth all of the drama reverb and/or local sales could be? Up to you. Phil, I don't remember if you mentioned they WILL do 10% off anything new when trading in. So, you could trade in a $50 pedal and get 10% off a $3k guitar. Some stuff I will trade in and trade up, some stuff I take cash and anything higher end goes on reverb since then you are loosing too much. FYI managers can override trade in values if they find that UVM(their system) is off. I was told this recently changed and they are no longer allowed to do that though. I think they just need to be better at used. Take better pics for online, offer more sales on used gear.
What do you mean horses don't play acoustic guitars? Do you not remember Quick Draw McGraw? El KaBong always had an acoustic guitar with him. Low two digits is not a lot of guitars.
@Phillip McKnight great points about how much GC and other stores make selling used gear. That is how our local mom & pop's stay afloat. Kids and parents come in, take a lesson, do some browsing, and buy some stuff. It's all about engagement and return. And your point about Sweetwater is dead on. I want to buy a new keyboard, but I can't go to Sweetwater, get a new one for a trade! I can walk out with a 10% off new gear trade, regardless of value of my trade AND you don't pay sales tax on the value of the trade, so I effectively get another 6% off whatever the value of my trade is! And with Guitar Center, even if your trade is only worth $10, if you trade on a new item that's $1,000, you get an extra $100 off. Can't do that elsewhere.
I went to a Guitar Center to buy a set of custom gauge D'Addario strings. The 1st Guitar Center only had 2 of the 6 string gauges that i needed. I went to a 2nd Guitar Center and they only had 2 more of the string gauges that I needed. I had to go to a Mom and Pop shop to buy the last 2 string gauges that I needed. It was EASIER to buy a custom gauge set of string gauges in the 1970's than it is today! THAT is pathetic!
I just picked up a used Jackson Mark Morton signature from guitar center the other day. I’ve always wanted to play one but have never seen one in a guitar shop. It’s like a super ergonomic Les Paul with a slightly offset body shape, belly and forearm contours, and a neck through construction. For how well the guitar plays and feels, I feel like a stole it for $800 bucks. Guitars like that being on the used rack is the whole reason I go to guitar center
The Tonex One is a great idea - I had one for a few weeks to check it out, and ultimately returned it. There was just way too much background noise when powered by its 9v jack, especially for the overdrive settings. This goes away when it's powered instead through its USB-C port though. YMMV... Also, love my Kiesel Zeus; really great features for its price. I now view other expensively priced guitars by comparing them with it.
With the guitar centre thing, what happens if the guitar was stolen? Can guitar centre hold the money to the seller until it’s confirmed not stolen? Or is guitar centre out of pocket if it’s stolen?
I grabbed a 50's Gibson Les Paul in Cardinal Red which was marked down to 1999.00 but this particular one gets even better, it was marked down further to 1799 for a blem ( a tiny spot on the bass side of the guitar which is literally invisible upon arrival thankfully as well. Here's the big kicker though and why I made the purchase - it weighs exactly 8.2 pounds. I picked this up the very first day the sale was released too. There were 5 to choose from and there was another one which weighed in at 8.6 pounds and while I was pondering the purchase it was sold right before my eyes and disappeared LOL! Luckily though, because that's when the 8.2 pounder I purchased was uploaded that moment so I thank whoever the dude was that purchased the first one 😆 The fretboard is real dark and after I did a set up on it the action is incredible, frets were perfectly level as well after I checked them with my rocker however they are plecked supposedly so that was really no surprise being spot on. Gibson gets a lot of flack about their QC but I'll be honest here, all 5 of my Gibson USA models play incredibly, maybe I'm lucky though but I thankfully never had an issue with one yet. This was probably the first time I've ever really gotten a 'deal' on a 'Black Friday' sale LOL!
I brought about 6 guitars and 5 amps to two different GC in my area and they didn't wait for anything. I think the employees snagged them up because they never went on the floor or the website. Sometimes GC sucks.
1:47:33 They call those "pup cups" around where I live. A lot place will make those with whip cream and sometimes peanut butter. Our dogs go crazy for them
The 21 day hold might be a good idea but it's a bit rough to offer it for sale in the shop prior to the 21 day check. It would make more sense [to me] if the guitar was first held for 21 days once the shop took it in and BEFORE it's priced & put out on display for sale. Then obviously the buyer can take it right away.
As a customer I kinda like it because GC doesn't put them online until they clear. You can grab the best deals that way. It also gives me a reason to stop by regularly which is great for GC because they've got a chance to sell me something every time and swing by.
Hey Phil, love the channel man! I always wonder if you trade into GC and want to buy something that’s not at the store but used online if everything still applies?
For this to work, the parents buying guitars need to embrace buying used guitars. But most parents would want to buy brand new as they don’t understand a used guitar can give way more quality for the money. Also I don’t think kids understand this either and want brand new.
Have you been into guitar center lately? They have those pedal stations actually setup and ready to go now. That combined with most of the guitars being unlocked now makes it a completely different experience for me
@@tj10777 Yeah that's true for the new pedals. Not all the stores have that yet. It would be nice if they were set up to make trying the used ones a little easier. I live in Seattle and have several GC close but none of them have the used pedals very close to the guitars and amps
?? Where in the world is Phil’s phone ?? Could make a board game about that ! 😂❤. I love the work shirt and I’m a woman … Maybe the shirt should say “ Know where your gear is ! “. ❤
If GC keeps trading out, they will be stuck with useless inventory. If everyone comes in with Harley Benton's and Squires, and do 2-1, 3-1, etc trades to walk out with Fenders and PRSs, GC will be stuck with a bunch of used Benton's that probably have no market. Harley Benton is already a bargain guitar, people aren't looking for a used Harley to get it on a deal.
I dont get to see all the fun balloons and thumbs up unless I watch on my computer my android is left out of the fun. Excited for this restring kit I'm stoked I won something.
I'm GC worst customer. I just go in to look at used stuff and BS with guitar players. It's always entertaining when they hire a new salesman like recently. He's been pushing a $5k guitar on me, funny.
Phil, the way you and Shauna manage your available time to avoid over~committing is impressive. I used to work on big software projects and most project managers didn't get this concept. Having a lot of fun with Tonex One I just picked up for Black Friday
We have a great shop in Minneapolis that gives 70% of their re~sale value if you trade and 60% if you sell (if they're currently acquiring guitars).
The Tonex One is a great idea - I had one for a few weeks to check it out, and ultimately returned it. There was just way too much background noise when powered by its 9v jack, especially for the overdrive settings. This goes away when it's powered instead through its USB-C port though. YMMV...

I bought a Fender Player II Strat today on sale. The Player II series seems to be much better than the old Player series. There are good deals to get.

Phil is a Tom Papa fan! Nice - love that guy.
I dont think Chibson are a thread to Gibson. If any, they would only reduce some sales from epiphone or tokai.
Their return policy is what helps me buy from them. If I get the thing home and I don't like it, I just take it back.

16:20 Thumbs up! 😂

Why isn't the guitar checked when it comes to the store? Do the work / check upfront so you know, that everything is the store is OK to buy.
The 21 day hold might be a good idea but it's a bit rough to offer it for sale in the shop prior to the 21 day check. What? No time stamps? Bummer...

In a round about way, you’re not really ‘selling’ your guitar to a shop, you’re actually ‘paying’ them 25,30,40 percent to sell it for you…
I wish Guitar Center gave more than 50% on trades. Dave's Guitars in Wisconsin gives you 80% of their sell price when you trade.
They do 70% on high end gear. What the cutoff for that is I’m not sure, but did it a few weeks back and got 70% value on a Gibson and a Nash Strat.
They have giving me 60% in Nashville for years. I’m also the guy that will bring in a $20 pedal to trade for a 2k guitar for the extra 10% off
Was kinda wishing the GOTW would be another Ibanez.
I'm GC worst customer.
I just go in to look at used stuff and BS with guitar players.
It's always entertaining when they hire a new salesman like recently. He's been pushing a $5k guitar on me, funny.
You forgot to include the sales tax discount.
You only pay the tax on the difference not the full $1k.
