  • I'm back, everyone - thanks for your patience and kind words.
Six years ago my Dad and I started a food forest in Ft. Lauderdale. Though he and Mom were never "plant people," it's continued to grow and thrive over the years. Chop and drop composting in place has turned the sand into beautiful soil and many of the trees are doing great. We have chocolate pudding fruit, coconut, katuk, grumichama, Surinam cherry, starfruit, mango, mulberry and other wonderful trees growing and it's just getting better and better over time. A lot of the "ground cover layer" is comprised of volunteer weeds and escaped ornamentals - yet even they are doing good work keeping the ground rich and moist.
Join me for a tour today and thanks for watching.

Wow! Hard to believe that Food Forest is only 6 years old! Your Dad was a cool guy...not only letting you plant a Food Forest...but jumping in like he did...looking after it and mulching and all. I Love that its all edible and beautiful too! Great Tribute to your Dad...thanks for showing us that. Cate

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. Got choked up a couple times just thinking of all the memories and quality time it sounds like you've had in the garden with dad. You can hear it in your voice: the excitement of the soil, and digging into the layers of it - like poking a hole and grabbing back to a time when your dad cut back, and created each of those layers. The gentle touch on the mosaic tiles. Love the idea of a food forest, and sending love your way from Tampa as you and your mom go through the unexpected loss of your father. Loss is hard. Abrupt loss in harder. Enjoy your dad's garden today 🌸 He's right there with you today.

David I lived in Ft.Lauderdale back in the '60s after I got out of the service. I can remember going down to the beach across from the Jolly Roger Hotel. Drove a RedTop Cab playing the Airport WOW Those were the days!!!! I was there when the Dallas Cowboys flew in and played the Miami Dolphins~(17 and 0)~~~ for GOD's sake Those Were Really the Days I enjoyed those years ago ;-)

And so we all learn where David the good got his passion. I got my gardening passion from my mother and when she passed due to cancer .my busy omni directional life took a turn and all i wanted was "Garden Therapy " as my mom called it . So work became far less important than weeding ,planting and building planting beds.

Thank you for sharing this! Very touching, as I grew up in the western side of Ft. Lauderdale, close to the New River Canal. We could never get our orange tree to grow much while I was growing up there. But we could smell the orange blossoms from Davie. After I moved out my Dad started growing low quats and they produced very well! Thanks for the memories of the sandy soil!

I grew up in Florida and our soil was greatBut my mother was a big believer in compost. We grew things that are just coming to the stores, she not only did your chop and drop but didn’t call it that. We had chickens, ducks, rabbits, pigs so we had lots of fertilizer. We also lived on a river so we had the benefit of the fish.

Hi Dave! Been following you for a while. I love seeing the possibilities for what I can do in my yard down here when it's so easy to get discouraged by all the cool things the temperate gardeners are up to. I'm so sorry to hear about your father. I wish we lived in a better world where I could offer you and mom help since I live in the area without being seen as a probable ax murderer.
