Weird (And Kind Of Pointless) PC Teardown/Rebuild

  • I'm going to turn an old redundant computer into wall art; I've got this old PC that was gathering dust in storage. I could actually use it for some small technical projects in the studio, but the big, bulky PC case is just too big and awkward.
    So... I'm going to rebuild it into a piece of functional wall-hanging decoration.
    In this episode, I'll just tear it down and rebuild onto a board; in future episodes, I'll enclose it, install some OSes and hang it on the wall
    Here's a link to the studio tour (part of which appears in this video): • Answers to AMA questions!

      Linus is funny, I always try to predict the moment he chooses to segue into the bit where he shills his show sponsor. Not always smooth, but if you can get past the annoying voice he puts up a good show with solid content (well, mostly solid...).

    Since you're not going with a metal case, could be a good idea to wire anything metal (including at least one of the motherboard standoffs) to the shell of the PSU

    • @jorgwunderlich-pfeiffer1985
      @jorgwunderlich-pfeiffer1985 3 роки тому +6

      Shouldn't the power connectors have a ground wire that is actually grounded?

    • @johnimg
      @johnimg 3 роки тому +5

      Point here is that although the psu connections have lower than mains voltage each component in the PC has a potential to pass mains through the case of each ,please wire an earth to each item routed to earth, in a metal case it would be the case itself ,as you have a wood case it’s missing, you could get a nasty shock while this is plugged in from any connected item without the earth .

    • @johnimg
      @johnimg 3 роки тому +1

      @@jorgwunderlich-pfeiffer1985 no they depend on the metal case normally used .

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  3 роки тому +20

      Good point. The power connections should all be common ground, but it's probably not safe to assume that all of the components (like the CD drive) have tied that to their casings, so yeah, for belt-and-braces safety, a separate grounding wire is a good idea

    When you said you liked the look of OSB I felt something. I like it too, but never admitted it around my woodworking friends who always go for teak or oak . So what if OSB doesn't have a grain? It has a pleasing randomness to it, like water. Genuinely inspiring for a 5 minute long video. Thank you Mr Shrimp.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  3 роки тому +3

      Every now and again, I like to gently question little norms like this - like the recommended way to make a wooden box is to cut the pieces (often wasting a little timber to do so) in such a way that the grain pattern continues around the corners of the box... but... why? Are you trying to pretend it grew in a box shape?
      I mean, I know that's not the point of doing that, but sometimes I actually want things to stand out and look exactly like someone made them

    Very interesting to see where this goes. Have been building PCs for many years and I like to fiddle around with them. I have 3 PCs, 2 PCs run on a 24/7 basis crunching data for Folding@home project. One of these machines is installed on an open air skeleton metal frame with holes everywhere for mounting stuff, also has an upper section that the GPUs sit on connected through PCI risers giving maximum airflow. Built from bits and pieces it still runs well despite being on constantly with a weekly reboot.
    As it is not a gaming rig I don't need a big monitor for it, so I attached a 1080p 22" monitor to the front so I can check on how the folding is going. I have this machine running Anydesk and can check on it remotely. I will be looking into creating a new desk soon and will install the gubbins of a PC into the inside of the actual desktop glass.
    A third PC is my big build in a really unique shaped Thermaltake case with all the RGB lighting and water cooling making it almost silent running. I just love to fiddle and make things differently.
    Will be keeping my ears open for updates on this build @AtomicShrimp thanks for a fun and very interesting channel.
    When I hear the advertisment for Audible, I think Atomic Shrimp did the voice for it, very similair :)

    I would add a low power cheap second hand graphics card to it like an Geforce 210 or NVS300. For three main reasons : 1 offload some heat and power draw from the cpu (thus helping it run better). 2 while you won't do editing or play games on this pc you might want to watch videos and I doubt that old onboard graphics can reliably keep 60fps even for 1080p youtube. 3 those gpus can be found for below 5 pounds.

    Looks a well thought of motherboard. It has actually been one of my frustrations with more modern (but not current) motherboards... too quick to drop support for certain things. With Intel you typically have to have the smaller form factor boards to have the PS2 connector or triple video connector, although maybe I wasn't looking in the right places or unwilling to pay a premium for it. The dropping of standard PCI was of great annoyance - had to buy a new sound card - adaptors existed but too pricey.

    I hope you draw a smiley face on the wood. Really adds to the whole 'generic feel' of the build. :)

    Pretty good tech setup, but I'd say your biggest achievement is the Wobble Dog (along with it's silicon hot dog test dummy)

    Just yesterday I dusted off my GF's old GA-MA770T-UD3 which is a full ATX bigger brother to yours. I'll be building a storage server/emulation box from it. I really wish it had SATA 6Gb/s, but that's only for the boot SSD, 3Gb/s is sufficient for HDDs. Oh. And I'll be building the case for it myself. Out of hardwood and smooth concrete. It's going to look sick.

    I have the same mother board and CPU in a box in my attic, it was a pretty good combination for a good few years, my main reason for retiring it was the PSU started to get a bit flaky and the HDD was showing it's age. It made more sense to build a new computer with all new parts at the time as the new Ryzen5 CPU's were light years ahead of the old Bulldozer architecture and I was starting to experiment with more CPU intensive software aswell as video editing.
    I keep thinking I should do something with the old system but it needs a PSU and HDD and could do with better RAM etc so until I think of a purpose for it, there is no point spending money to get it running, which seems a shame really.

    Very clever, I could never build a computer as I'm computer illiterate. I have great appreciation for those how can. I like watching these but wish I could understand what you are talking about..hahaha.

    thats very cool, what about building a whole room pc - i mean putting all the bits individually and directly on your gypsum wallboard walls, and really spread far apart. so a motherboard on one wall, power supply on another and so on - never seen that before.

    I'm doing a bit of this too with an old HP laptop, although I am attempting to keep the laptop case, which is still structurally "OK" (although totally manky with years of abuse).
