I love this stuff. Real genius has got a good touch of madness coursing through its brain. After 25 listenings to this thing, where the creative spirit is concerned, so very few have the right chemistry like Alex did.
Chilton is mocking the song, but I bet (like me and a few million others) he secretly kinda' loved it. I wish he'd done a finished version. It would have cut Wilson Pickett's cover, which was far from bad.
This is a man who regularly sang "What's Your Sign, Girl", lovingly and with an obvious admiration for the song. I am quite sure he probably loved this one too.
We had a bar in this town called Big Star. They had a jukebox. Everything Alex, Chris and Big Star. We used to crank all of them especially, Sugar, Sugar. I danced to it.
Alex Chilton is fucking great but this kind of deconstruction should actually be credited to Terry Manning who started the whole thing when he messed around with the Boxtops 'Choo Choo Train' one night. The results are on his first solo album Home Sweet Home. Alex loved it and there is a direct line from that, through this, to Like Flies On Sherbet. Credit where it is due, thanks Terry, you changed history, or at least mutated it.
This was done in the studio during a session... this was not recorded for commercial release... it was just fun to blow off steam during the session.... there's a lot of that from Chilton sessions.
@NonaRyde2012 The fact that it's someone as cool as Alex Chilton as opposed to, say (shudder) Nickelback or even worse is the great part. For every cool chick like you there's ten who are listening to Kid Rock or some such crap.
@@saltydog4759 It's not your fault, it's my fault, I need to remember that comments are read globally and most people won't understand my use of British vernacular.
I love the way Alex Chilton deconstructs songs.
Me too. ❤
Wow. It’s like The Replacements got in a time Machine. No wonder Paul W. Is a fan of Alex Chilton.
I can't imagine not loving this guy.
I love him. We had the Memphis connection & New Orleans.
I'll never hear a saner version of this song in my life.
The Punk Rock Version OF Sugar Sugar Chilton Was A Genius

"Genius"?? Lol..don't throw the word around.
@@chipgaasche4933 WAY too overused.
Oh if we call Brian Wilson genius, Alex falls in the same group. ❤
Found this about 4years ago ... Still one of my favourite covers. Always drawing me back
I wish there was video of this.
so raw, love it when bands just have fun...so grateful these have come out along with so many raw Beatles, etc. Thanks for posting, made my eve!~
This is fucking awesome. I can hear (I think) Chilton laughing while playing this. What a great jam session this must have been.
You can picture Iggy Pop covering it this way. Who knows, maybe he was there getting lit with Alex.
just another reason Alex Chilton is a rock god
If such a thing exists then he's it.
Amen!!

Alex and everybody loves this song!
He clearly loved it. Even if he was pretending to mock it. :)
A few of his covers definitely give off that vibe. The cover of Boogie Shoes is another good example.
This is a man who regularly sang "What's Your Sign, Girl", lovingly and with an obvious admiration for the song. I am quite sure he probably loved this one too.
we miss Alex. We would have had the Memphis/New Orleans connection. You left us too soon. RIP.
I wish the Archies were this cool.
We had a bar in this town called Big Star. They had a jukebox. Everything Alex, Chris and Big Star. We used to crank all of them especially, Sugar, Sugar. I danced to it.
literally the best thing ever
Oh goodness - he is marvelous! Best rock cover I've heard of the classic - It's definitely a fave of mine now.
Irony or tribute? Who cares? This rules.
Can never get tired of listening to this

In addition Home Sweet Home contains some of Chris Bell's first and wildest guitar solos, notably on their crazed version of 'Savoy Truffle'.
and booze and dope should get some credit.
That's why his 'Here comes the Sugar' is excellent prefacing.
That was Terry Manning
Raw, Brilliant and Awesome!!!
If this is 1970…. Way ahead of it’s time
Was actually recorded in 1969
damn nice version of the Archies Sugar Sugar
who the hell voted this down - the four of you - shake your fucking heads.
Now the five of you.
now the eight of you.
STILL. GREAT. ROCK. UNTIL. TODAY'S
Where can I find "Free Again: the 1970 Sessions"? This is great. So is the version of Jumpin Jack Flash
WOW! Alex is a national treasure.

@NonaRyde2012 That and this song just made my day.
really fantastic!
Exellent cover , Really is !!
Wow this is amazing
flagemdown66, not true. We recorded this on purpose, for the album which was to be named 1969.
+artswatch who do you mean "we"? Who are you, please? Respectfully asking.
+194decibels, Terry, Richard, and Alex. Thanks for listening.
artswatch You’re an idiot
+E G Why is he an idiot?
Absolutely Awesome
This was done in the studio during a session... this was not recorded for commercial release... it was just fun to blow off steam during the session.... there's a lot of that from Chilton sessions.
Nope, we recorded it to be included on the album we were making at the time.
@@artswatch badass reply
@@artswatch Thanks for the clarification, Terry :)
Needs more Veronica.
where's the cowbell?
Sounds like they had some fun.
This is even better than the Shaggs or, for that matter, The Velvet Underground & Nico!
See, since Day 1 I always pegged this song as a closet Velvet Underground song!
Better than the Beatles.
Fucking A right!!
I can't decide if John Fry was laughing his ass off or crying during this. I dig it, personally.
John wasn't there during the recordings, but later after he heard it he wasn't exactly wild about it
awesome!!!
This is punk rock! I LOVE YOU ALEX
Camp good times
AMAZING
worth the wait_and i've been waiting a long fucking time.
''I can't!! I can't!!!!!''
Original comment deleted. Guess it was refrencing "Here comes the night"? First thing that popped into my mind
Unique version of Sugar Sugar!
Glorious train wreck, that.
Sweet!!!...and sour.
good :)
@BaronM Thanks!

Despite all the funny comments, this sounds very blues to me.
Mr Sexy👍🏼❤❤

Sounds like it should be an Ozzy Osbourne cover to Me.
Ça c'est la version saoule!!

Pistols?
This is the bollocks.

About the only way the song is listenable... barely .
Sorry, I mean I love Chilton but this version is so bad!
