    Note: Some annotations in the video are swapped for the color volume and gamut. The TCL 5 and TCL 6 numbers are actually from the Samsung NU8000 and MU6300 respectively instead. The good values should be instead: TCL 6 Series (83.9%, 88.57%) and TCL 5 Series (72.5%, 90.13%). You can find the full table of measurements here: www.rtings.com/tv/tests/picture-quality/wide-color-gamut-rec-709-dci-p3-rec-2020 . Also, the annotations numbers of the TCL 5 Series shown in this video are instead of the Samsung MU6300. Our next video of the TCL 5 Series will have the correct numbers, and you can also see all of them in our review here: www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/5-series-2018-s517 .

      have you noticed your contrast AND LOCAL DIMMING - which 5 series lacks? - where in vid 5 series is much more uniform, much higher contrast and the least cloudy and least light bloom around the square by far. Are we sure your 5 and 6 aren't reversed in video for those? One buys local dimming to eliminate what the 6 is showing horribly.

    I've had this tv for 3 years now and the picture quality is really good. The only issue we sometimes experience is that the tv will occasionally turn off by itself. This usually happens 4-5 times a week. We never took the tv in to get it looked at, because we didn't want to not have a tv for a period of time. 4K movies look great, which is why we bought it.

    Good review! I was all set to buy the P series on the strength of my BIL’s research and experience. Then just as I was going to pull the trigger I figured I’d make s google and sure enough, the 6 series was about to drop. So I waited a month or so and ordered our 55R617 on 4.26. I guess I got lucky as it arrived via prime on 4.30 with no QC or picture issues. A few adjustment to factory settings based on Joelster, TechnoDad and CNET did resolve some haloing and dirty screen effect that had me worried. Google “CNET TCL 6 series settings for a quick take. I’m a happy camper this far.

    I ended up picking up the 65 inch TCL6 series at Best Buy on Black Friday weekend. I have very small uniformity issues. Looks like a faint checkerboard (might not be using a big enough diffuser between the backlight) more apparent on a bright white surface, but in movies, games, daily use, I never notice it, I could not be happier with my purchase! Amazing black levels, and astonishing highlights! Very good Peak brightness!

    The TCL R615 series is the Best Buy version.
    "If you don't care about the voice remote, Best Buy's 615 series is a bit cheaper. It comes with a standard remote without voice search and uses infrared (IR) technology so you have to aim it at the TV."
    Basically if you don't care about voice functions go with the R615 at Best Buy for about $30 cheaper.

    • @chrislewis6735

      One negative is you must have line of sight for the 615 to pick up the remote. The 617 can be aimed anywhere and the tv will still pick it up. Just something to keep in mind.

      Agreed. I just picked up the 55R617 for just over $500 and the picture is outstanding. I also had to actually turn the brightness down out of the box, but the contrast and color depth is superb. I have not seen any recent TV's that can compete with TCL's performance and features for the price points of their 5- or 6-series models at the same value per dollar.

      @@mistamaog Same, I just bought mine 2 weeks ago. 55in r615, the picture is outstanding and I have no screen issues. But, the new r625 has qled and if it's anything like this one will be amazing. But I'm still very happy, went with a Samsung 7 series but kept dropping internet connection. Found out that's a big problem with Samsung TVs. Hooked the tcl up and holy cow, I noticed the picture was immediately way sharper and brighter than the Samsung. Then found out about Dolby vision and dang, even regular HD TV shows are better on the tcl. Samsung doesn't even offer Dolby vision on their TVs.

      @wannabchomsky Yeah, it's still working perfectly and we watch a lot of TV. The reviews I've read on the r625 have not been as good as when the r615 came out. But I hear the 8 series is outstanding. Thanks for the reply, always feels good to hear you made a good decision.

    • @TechandTools1
      @TechandTools1 4 роки тому

      @wannabchomsky I never buy the warranties, except on some of my pc parts from microcenter. I haven't had a single issue with my 615 and it's going on a year, the picture really is top notch for the price. If you want to get the extra protection I don't blame you, peace of mind is nice. It is definitely a quality TV, way better than the Samsung that was equally as expensive. I'm glad I bought it. I've watched a lot of TV on it, the sound isn't the best but that's not a big deal, I have a surround sound setup.

    I went with the Vizip P65-F1 ($900) mainly for the 120hz panel. The TCL 65R615 ($900) was a close second. I also considered the Sony 65X900F ($1500) and the Vizio PQ65-F1 ($1500). The Vizio PQ6-F1 was also a close second with the top notch high peak luminance and improved anti-reflection filter. The Sony has the best anti-reflection filter of all and a top notch anti reflection filter cannot be underestimated in importance...black levels are destroyed by reflections in lighted rooms...so in many situations the Sony will have superior black levels to these others, next the Vizio PQ65-F1, then the Vizio P65-F1, and then the TCL 65R615...although they are all better than average.

    • @5MinuteSuppReviews

      EscapeVelo the Vizio P65 and TCL 65R615 are my final 2 choices. I have the Vizio slightly above the TCL. What is your opinion on the Vizio P65, glad you chose that one? Any complaints yet? Thanks

    • @EscapeVelo
      @EscapeVelo 5 років тому

      @@5MinuteSuppReviews Either one would be a good choice. They both have low input lag. They both have uniformity issues. The Vizio apps kindof suck. The Roku platform is much better but you can hook up a streaming device to the Vizio so that's not really an issue.
      At 55" Id choose the TCL 6 Series for more Dimming Zones, at 65" the Vizio is a bit better with motion with the 120Hz panel.
      Cant go wrong either way.

    Great video. Wish there would have been more comparisons between the p607/605 since its closer than the 5 series. But from what I have seen, I am glad I have the P605. The grey uniformity is even worse on the 6 series. While I notice the Dirty Screen Effect about 20% of my total viewing experience, it's only on scenes that are one solid color or big sky scenes that move otherwise you don't notice it at all with most viewing. The input lag is also better on the the P series which is a plus for me. As for HDR/DV content, it's plenty bright. I run full brightness on SDR content so I am used to the whole screen being bright and I think most people are. What a lot of people don't understand is that the brightness is controlled by the meta data of the movie. Even full brightness may seem dark, but it's what the director intended and I am getting used to it more and more with each HDR/DV show/movie I watch.

    Review is spot on. My 55R613 (Costco version) has slight dirty panels. For $400, it's far cheaper than Sony which has a better viewing angle. For spare room, this TV is fine. For critical viewing, OLED is the way to go but it's at least $2,000. My last TV was a 50" plasma but the TCL is so much brighter and is $1,000 cheaper. I also checked out the 2019 QLED model but did not think TCL's implementation of QLED technology improving much on contrast, just a marketing term.

    I’m going to wait for the Vizio P Quantum to release for reasons below:
    1) The time between TVs should give TCL some room for a firmware update to make any improvements necessary.
    2) The time between can also mean TCL will release more quality sets, thus lessening my chances for the dirty screen effect.
    3) I am a “soap opera effect” fan when it comes to movies and shows, and a native 240Hz refresh rate is what sold me on my current Vizio TV (I tested this feature in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers using “The Battle For Helm’s Deep” battle scene; I was won over). I’m not going to dismiss the TCL 6 TVs yet as I have not seen their MoInt in action yet. I am aware the native refresh rate is 60Hz.
    4)I want to see what the input lag is going to be on the P Quantum as I do serious gaming.
    In the end, one of these TVs will decide how I join the 4K HDR era. Better start putting money aside, I guess. Man...first world problems indeed...

      Eric DiDomenico I currently have a 65 inch 1080p plasma. I want to enjoy 4K. My choices right now are 75 inch Vizio E series or tcl 65 inch 6 series. What do u think ?

    • @NocturnEternal
      @NocturnEternal 6 років тому

      Arnold Nathan You should first decide which screen size is what fits best for the room. Honestly, I feel the TCL would be a better option. That’s just by the specs alone. But I haven’t used it so I can’t comment too much on it. Compare the specs of both TVs, but I prefer the specs of TCL right now.
      If you use Roku or do a lot of streaming, then TCL would be a better choice, especially if you’re a cord cutter and you stream a lot of channels.

    Good review. It's a fair review but it can't be understated that there's a strong chance of getting a bad panel. If you get a good panel, then this review applies. I bought the R615 65 inch and occasionally notice significant corner shadows, so am thinking about returning it and getting a Samsung NU8000 for about $200 more. I wanted a Samsung QLED but it's a little outside my price range. I feel that Samsung and other big names have better quality control as well as panel uniformity (as mentioned in this video). I just bought one of these and returned it the next day. It did have horrible dirty screen effect, it wasn't as bad when watching tv/movies, but became unbearable when playing games. Also I was not that impressed with the picture quality over my 5 year old Samsung f5500 plasma, which was a mid range plasma when it came out, even on HDR/Dolby vision content, but imo way better than any lcd still. The blooming on the TCL was annoying too, not sure if i'll ever get used to local dimming, I think Id prefer an LCD without it. I think I'm going to save for an Oled, it's the only thing that is an upgrade from plasma, except maybe the Samsung Q9f that looks amazing but its way too expensive.

    Thank you for showing us the hockey game in this one, I wish more of the videos had that. I'm trying to find the right- hockey tv. And this one- doesn't appear to be it.
    Is the drag in the hockey game a result of the dirty screen effect?
    I know you have the top 10 TVs article for sport, but what are suggestions for a $500 budget or so?
    I'm looking at the Vizio M558-G1, and maybe something from Samsung like the Q7R...
    Any good recommendations out there for hockey or general sports?

    I just got this and I am relatively happy with it, but there are issues with movement blurring and artifacting. All TVs are going to have some issues though and for the price, it's a very nice TV.

    I'd love to see a review on the TCL x4 65" QLED (and/or 55"), do you guys plan on doing one?
    As someone who sells TV's, there is very little to no information about this panel out there aside from the standard manufacturer specs and typical training videos. I've messed around with the panel in store and it holds up pretty well, but I can't do comprehensive testing like you guys can.
    From what I saw of CES though, it looks as though TCL are pulling out the big boy gloves and jumping into the fray with Samsung and LG. So it'll be interesting to see how well they hold up against other QLED's for the much cheaper price tag.

    You need to test the 65" version. Uniformity is worse than on the 55" model. Corner vignetting also wasn't mentioned here and can be quite significant.

    i have had my 6 Series tv for a few weeks, and initially there was some uniformity issues, but after a few days of using the tv only thing i see is in the corners a little darkness, rest of the screen has really leveled out very nicely for me
    i have no complaints or problems so far with my tv, i use netflix, plex and ps4 pro and have my PC hooked to it as well
    i use yamaha sound bar so i can't speak to the speaker quality on the tv

    You just need to tone down the color down to 35 for better skin tone. I actually match oled skin tone to my tcl 6 series. The only thing it cant match oled is the contrast and blooming the rest are good and choose warm color instead of cool and normal

    Curious... So the P series only allowed audio played on phones/tablets only if you use the tvs apps. Using an external input, it'd disable it entirely. Wonder if the 6 series fixes that.
    Seems like a brighter, slightly bulkier tv than my 55p605. But! Roughly 7ms more input lag. Which, 17-20ms is still awesome. But 12ms on the p605 and a pc mouse, was almost an eye opening experience coming from 34ms.

    An excellently comprehensive and intelligible review, as always. However, the comment about the TCL 6 having a limited number of local dimming zones is curious, as the 55" panel has 96. What is your reference/standard for number of zones? I mean, the Vizio E-series has just 10 zones.

    • @Selrisitai
      @Selrisitai Рік тому

      I believe the 65'' has 125 dimming zones. That seems like a pretty huge amount! I'm struggling to even think of how they could have that many "zones" on a mere 55'' or 65''! I have _no_ problems with my white mouse moving around on a black background. I have had a TV that did have that issue, but even then it was a rare situation.

    Clouding due to the limit # of local dimming zones? The 6 series has a lot of local dimming zones, 🤔.
    And the video of the dimming you've posted looks great so I'm even more confused.
    This seems to be a trend where you are making these claims about the local dimming of the TCL 6 series compared to other models but when looking for proof to those statements they don't hold up.
    Would love to hear an explanation.

    • @marklouieadame
      @marklouieadame 4 роки тому

      True got the tcl 6 and the local dimming is really good compare to x950 and x900f this tv got 96 zones on 55 and 120 on 65 inch. Compared both sony x900f vs tcl6 om blooming tcl 6 wins by miles.

    On May 9, 2018, tech writer Will Greenwald at PCMag.com gave this model a favorable review, but he did point out that it definitely wasn't energy efficient. Also, on May 19, 2018, tech writer Nick Pino at TechRadar.com mentioned that this model likes to be viewed in a dimly lit room. Put it in a brightly lit room and it will disappoint, he said.
