- History documentary dealing with the origins of the British monarchy amid the Anglo-Saxon / Viking wars of early medieval England. Today, the United Kingdom is among the world’s most celebrated monarchies. It is also one of the longest running. The roots of the British monarchy lie deep in the Early Middle Ages. Who was the first King of England? Interestingly, the harrowing Viking invasions of the 9th century led to the birth of a united English kingdom.

You forgot it was Alfred’s daughter Æthelfead warrior princess you led majority of battles against the Danes that England never talks about. It was Æthelfead who drove the Danes back in a counter offensive and showed mercy to those who submitted to her and her brother. Which brought more Danes surrendering after all most were farmers and merchants and they were ruled forcibly by pirate like individual. Remember Machiavellism chief tenant is people don’t care who rules them if thier normal lives are kept stable. Throw chaos into that stability those same people will eliminate you personally. Why it’s rare change ever happens people don’t want change they like stability in thier everyday lives. In some cases kings and some queens have given names to the people who are causing the disruption to thier daily lives. King doesn’t need do anything people eill do job for him. Why Machiavellism rules then as it does today. Choose your battles. Choose wisely. Always be willing to compromise a little sugar brings good will with previous foes. Who know prefer to be friends.
Who/Where did the 1st Monarchy's originate? Not just Britain. Who deemed Monarchs Royal?
Aethelstan was the first king of England but virtually nobody knows who he was. Interesting 🤔
He was king of The English. Not styled King of all England.
@@manmaje3596 Wasn't Edgar the first "king of England " after the defeat of Eric bloodaxe?
@@benfisher1376 That was the last time Northumbria fell under Norse domination, but he was not the first to do that. Æthelstan is regarded by most historians as the first King of England.
@@manmaje3596 They basically mean the same thing, just worded differently. It shows a shift of Germanic monarchs ruling a people to an area of land.
@@Pyrrhus_of_Epirus is that Edgar in your profile pic?
Another interesting, and much earlier figure, was the Jutish king Æthelberht of Kent, who is cited to be the first christian king and Bretwalda (overlord of Britain). During his reign Canterbury became prominent for christianity in England, the earliest germanic law code was written (Law of Æthelberht, Textus Roffensis) and coinage due to trade with his father in law, the Frankish king, began to circulate for the first time since the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons (and Jutes). He was later canonized for his role in spreading christianity among the new nobility. Figure a video on him would be right up your alley.
First Christian 'Jute/Saxon' king, the Celtic kings were already Christian.
There's sooo many layers!!! So many invasions and wars etc. I find it all totally fascinating!!
What an extensive channel. It's great! It's more than history, for many of us, it's our family and cultural heritage.
Sound is terrible, cant watch. Kerp music off.
Amazing video about an amazing man. Very proud as an Englishman. Thanks
👍👍 🏴🏴
You just got yourself a new subscriber. Great work!
So glad I found this channel. I watch all sorts of English History channels and this one is the most well put together of any I’ve watched. Thank you. I’m going to definitely go thru your portfolio!
Welcome aboard! Thanks so much!
I love this topic. Early monarchy, and before, are so fascinating
Great video!
Really great video!
Thank you!
A wonderful explained video & excellent historical channel thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
Good video ⚔️
I’m interested in all of this, because I watched Vikings and The Last Kingdom. 😅 Better perspective.
Danke für die info
Great video. Loved to learn more about Æthelstan. His aunt Æthelflæd Lady of Mercia was a formidable woman, one of my favourite female historical figures. Love early medieval history. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video.
Thanks for the visit
@@RealCrusadesHistory no prob, anytime
Really intresting thankyou
Glad you enjoyed it
May I suggest another video talking about the oldest monarchy in Europe? Spanish monarchy and its roots in the Visigothic kingdom. Thank you
How does that make it the oldest monarchy?
@@sebe2255 Because the monarchy has its roots in the Visigothic Kingdom of Spain and continued to the kingdom of Asturias and so on...
@@robertocb7911 I guess, but Asturias itself doesn’t exist anymore. Kind of like saying England is the oldest monarchy because the Kingdom of Wessex existed in the 6th century
@@robertocb7911 the Visigoth Kingdom collapsed in the eighth century…. Having origins is not the same as originating from…. It wasn’t until 300 years later when the house of Jiménez claimed the long dead historic Visigothic title *Imperator totius Hispaniae*…. You might want to do a bit of reading on the successor states huh?
this channel deserves 500k subs at least !
Thank you!
Thank you for correcting my Intel as I thought it alfred and not his son who dispatched the vikings from English shores.
Alfred only prevailed because of Uhtred son of Uhtred
Cornwell can spin A HELL of yarn!!!
Uhtred did not actually live in that era
Destiny is all
For benbanbaurgh
@@stephengayton5246 I take it that you missed the joke
Quite informative, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Very good video. Is this the first English/Anglo Saxon monarch? Weren’t there British/Welsh kingdoms before?
Is this any game you used in the video???
Alfred the Great, king of The Anglo-Saxons is my 30th great grandfather.
Aethelbert, king of Wessex, Essex & Kent is your 31st great uncle.
Are you still in England and do you live in the legacy left behind? I'm very intrigued
@@alicerp2008 No I have never lived in England, but I have a lot of history about my ancestors ... which are gradually dying... : (
@@JTCCWB oh I see, I live in England and I love history, so I was interested ☺️
Hope you do this for Spain & the other European Monarchies.
Great idea!
Brunanburh in 937ad, is located around Storeton Woods, Wirral - Red Hill Road is said to have been so named as it ran red with blood from the battle (local Folk Lore, more than one source). from the Clatterbridge roundabout on the M53, head towards Tranmere Rovers, you will pass through the battlesite (see also Bernard Cornwell's excellent series 'The Last Kingdom' - the last installment 'Seven Kings Must Die' covers the battle), The survivors returned to Dublin from around Parkgate.
Æthelstan means i guess "Gem stone" bcause "Edelstein" means gemstone in Norwegian
Noble stone I believe
@@greensword3880
Yes, Æthel means noble and stan means stone. Just like Æthel ling, which means, nobel birth.
@@evafodor4660
Very interesting Éva, I looked up what you have said and it's not conclusive but interesting none the less.
@@johnbrereton5229 Its Ädelsten in swedish. Ädel meaning noble.
And thus we have the most tasty breakfast pastry, the Danish. Thank you.
I can't find anything on how the idea of the noble blood start. Who are the first people of the noble blood line. Had to start somewhere.
I guess it all depends on who you ask... and which time period you consider...
It is still funny how the modern count basically starts with William the conqueror, yet he only became King because he usurped a previously existing kingdom based on the alleged promise he was the heir of the previous king of that kingdom.
was it Alfred the great from the marshland?
Discuss the origin of royal absolution
Wondering how the name of the King who was kept mentioning through out the video is written. The one in the comment section I believe.
Who/Where did the 1st Monarchy's originate? Not just Britain. Who deemed Monarchs Royal?
With due Respect that crown looking scanty compared with today , I wonder how the crown got so loded😊
Scotland had Kings and Queens from ad845. Make your mind up whether you are talking about the UK, England or Britain. Video title is very, very confusing.
I do miss J. Stephen's narration.
I still narrate about half of them. Here's the one before this one: ua-cam.com/video/DCTzkmbXsio/v-deo.html
What about Ultred son of Ultred .. was he there. Fighting with his sword serpents breath… ??
All those people killed over kings. Why didn’t they get rid of the kings and sort it out between themselves.
🤷♂️
This will happen very soon.
hmmmmm...I think that I would give Alfred that honor.
What about Alfred!
Was there no Anglo king before the Saxons and after Rome?
They migrated from Angel and Saxen at the same time so no
The Angles, saxons and Jutes is where english identity came from so there wasn't "anglos" before they came lol
@@benfisher1376 The Angles and the Saxons were not the same people. The word English comes from the Angles.
@@tkgus2408that isn’t what he said. The modern day “English” are a combination of Anglo, Saxon, Jute and Frisian.
When people talk about “Anglo-Saxons” it refers to all of them. They all invaded England together, mixed and became the modern day English.
They also were actually the same Germanic people, with the same religion but just from different tribes all around the same sort of area.
The Jutes were from modern day Denmark, the Frisians from around modern day Netherlands, the Saxons from Saxony in modern day Germany and the Angles from modern day Northern Germany too.
History a here to stay cos they just all around
Alfred is translated as Elf Counselor. Is Santa Claus middle name Alfred? I mean Santa's pretty great after all.
Literally Elf Counselor, but the underlying meaning is Wise Counselor.
What about king William? I heard he was England's first king?
Are you talked about William the Conquerer? He invaded England in 1066 - from Normandy.
I hear pans Flute in the background. .
I thought Scotia was not developed until the 11th century and that the region was occupied by Pict tribes until King Malcolm came along as per the MacBeth tragedy .... this history stuff so full of twists and what if's ... very complicated .. Malcolm united with Margaret of Wessex ( born somewhere in Scandinavia or Rus territory.... who created King's who later were ancestors of English Kings... King William ( the Anglo Norman ) seems to fit the real description of the first English King as his descendants melded with the Scotia Royals and all of them became Anglican ( Roman Catholics until King Henry VIII changed the game when he separated from the Roman Catholic order ) - the Rus were Orthodox Christians as seen in the schism between the Rome Pope and the Rus Pope in 1054ish..
Amazing ‼️
But feel free to contact me if someday you guys need a private guide for holiday when travel to Bali/Jakarta/Lombok/Indonesia 🇮🇩😎👍
Alfred the great is first king of England he did rule most of england still historians got wrong Athelstan is not first king of england.
i dont know ask the pommy was it true
Angleind
I'm glad I watched the Last Kingdom 😂
Uthred !!!!
Yes British Monarch Do Contain The Aysence
Aethelstan
KING ARTHUR come from wales.
before that it was just mini chieftain
The last kingdom ❤️🩹
The house of wessex started in 519
"Celebrated"
I'm no Saxon I'm viking son of Yorkshire
it how he survive the heathen dane army cause they cant go into a wetland
I have never been to Europe.
Well since Arthur didn’t exist I doubt it😂. That would be Athelstan!
they all got run over by the dane only Alfred survive in the wetland and were the last chief standing whom became great king Alfred
All this nonsense has been debunked. Modern scholars all agree that knights page pulled a sword from a stone, just as the legends foretold.
Brutus of Troy
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government
Arthur is a fictional character
Bruno
I thought eckbert or someone was the first king 🤗
