    What an excellent, well structured and well delivered lesson; thank you very much. You addressed all my concerns with relative clauses. In particular with the detailed breakdown of the occasions when you may reduce them. All this and glamour too, What's not to like!

  • @thomasd8549
    @thomasd8549 Рік тому +1

    It viewing the relative clauses, the speaker or writer makes the determination what is Extra information and what is crucial to provide meaning. Context is important.
    In the example "This marker" already defines what you're talking about. You must look at what you are trying to say, and why you chose the statement in the first place. USA Schools no longer teach rhetoric and logic. Teachers are taught teaching methods, and only obtain one class on grammar. I know this for a fact!
    Better explanation:
    The red marker, which my company bought, is horrible.
    --This phrase assumes that there are red markers that your company didn't buy.
    The red marker which my company bought is horrible.
    --here, the red marker which is defined by the ones the company buys is horrible. The speaker decides whether this info is necessary or not, and in speech, you wouldn't say comma...comma, except for a minor pause.

    Does that mean we cannot reduce relative clauses when there is a past tense?
    So, can we remove the relative clause in this case: "Did everyone who takes the class trip get sick?"

  • @lnh799
    @lnh799 2 роки тому +1

    I dont understand why we couldn't reduce " Did everyone who took the class trip get sick? " ->"Did everyone who taking the class ...?"
    Because I see an example like this:
    Boys who attended this school had to wear uniform -> boys attending this school...

    ‘Which’ used for people?!! How?
    ‘Which’ is used with both defining or restrictive clauses and with non-defining or non-restrictive clauses.
    While ‘ that’ only with restrictive clauses.

  • @MIBEATTLE
    @MIBEATTLE 9 місяців тому

    Can we change the sentence to reduce it?
    Eg:
    Did everyone who took the class trip get sick?
    To
    Did everyone taking the class trip get sick?
    ???
    Delete the subject pronoun and change the verb form to gerund.
    Is it possible?
    Another eg:
    I like the paintings that hang on the wall.
    To
    I like the paintings hanging on the wall.
    Is it possible ?

    I usually get confused how to use Whom

    • @idkreallyty
      @idkreallyty 2 роки тому

      we use "whom" only for people and when the relative pronouns is indicating the object and we can omit "whom"
      example: The guy whom I gave an advice how to use whom was Daniel
      Subject - I
      Verb - Gave
      Object - The guy
      therefore; we can drop "whom"
      The guy I gave an advice how to use whom was Daniel
