The last scene of the movie in which Seth and Evan meet the girls in the mall and end up going their separate ways, with a glance back at each other as life begins to take them in different directions is the one that resonated the most with me. In a way it signaled the end of childhood for our protagonists, as we witness them moving into a new phase of their life where friendships and sleepovers are secondary to trying to meet girls and eventually get married and have children. It's a powerful theme which I think has not been executed in film anywhere near as subtly yet poignantly as it was here.
💯 In the beginning I was afraid of accepting that everyone has to move on and create their lives, adulthood isn't that terrible as it felt in the beginning
It's extremely realistic. Minus the bits with the cops, everything in that movie is VERY plausible for my high school experience and honestly? Kinda tame. Most people I knew were doing much MUCH crazier shit than depicted by junior year.

That scene where they are in their sleeping bags saying they love each other, was something I actually also did with my best friend at the time as well. Which felt so insane to see in a movie that also just happened to come out my SENIOR year of high school. I honestly think I was blessed that Superbad can forever be a personal time capsule for my highschool senior year.
It came out in theaters right before my junior year of high school, but I didn't see it until a few months before I graduated high school. I agree with the latter statement.
What I really love about this movie is that it's pretty much timeless. None of the jokes rely on pop culture references. Apart from the fact that the world has been taken over by smartphones since then, the story could've taken place in pretty much any time in recent history.

It’s a terrific movie and I’ll forever love the scene where they say I love you to one another - so nice to see male friendship, especially one where two boys openly express their love for one another. Friendship is just a form of love like romance and family and films like this and Banana Split (2018) that celebrate friendship as a form of true love will always have a special place in my heart.
My friend and I saw it in an empty theater. When that moment happened we looked deeply into each other’s eyes and said, “I don’t love you.” It was pretty gay.
I didn’t end up seeing this movie until I was in high school myself, but I just remember how refreshing it was to hear kids that sounded like me and my friends. In high school movies the kids are always too smart, clever, mature, and way too attractive. I loved that this movie portrayed high schoolers accurately. We are ugly, dumb, nerds who swear way too much and are desperate to lose our virginity. None of my high school friends look like the cast of Euphoria or Riverdale, but I had a Seth and a Fogel in my own friend group lol.
What I loved most about this movie was that it was the very first film I saw where two guy best friends say "I love you" to each other. I NEVER saw any movie that had shown that kind of affection without it following a "you gay brah?" joke to it. It was just so refreshing
Not exactly the take away I took from that scene, but your absolutely right!. To me it was more about the few moments of clarity you only get after a party when you are too exhausted to think straight.
It's not something you see often in entertainment, but on occasions you do get a scene where two guys who do say it. It's just bizarre how some people find it weird.
In reality there are friends that truly love each other beyond the sexual attraction. Soldiers for example that would and do die for each other. The thing ia nowadays most probably think that if you love your friends who happen to be the same sex as you then you are gay/lesbian and if you have the money you should transition. Sad but true, I wonder how many straight kids are confused because of the same reason.
I was pretty much the perfect age to watch this when it came out, being 15 when it came out on DVD in 2008. It's still my favorite ever comedy and the most accurate depiction of mid-2000's high school that I have ever seen. It's the 2000s equivalent to Breakfast Club or Clerks.
Superbad was the movie fantasy every student wanted, High School party, going on an adventure running from the cops at night, the sun going down before the party, everything about the movie is perfect.
“How can I manage life without you” so good! Legitimately how I felt when my middle school friends and I realized we weren’t going go the same high school. Back in 2005 btw 😂
It's scary how much this movie parallels my high school experience. Especially when Evan explains his "crazy" night to Becca. It pretty much summed up every weekend with my friends. Seth, Evan, and McLovin were me and my two friends to a T. It's uncanny
I'll never forget seeing this opening night. The theater was packed and there wasn't a single person that wasn't dying laughing. One of the best experiences of my highschool years.
This is one of those few movies that stays with you forever and you only begin to appreciate more as you grow older. I was roughly the same age of the characters when I watched it in the year it came out and can't help but get transported to my youth everytime I watch it. To me, it's the "realest" comedy movie of all time!
I’ve never, ever identified with a movie like I did when I watched this one. I was the exact age of the characters when this came out. If you want the most faithful representation of highschool in 2007, this is it.
This most def resonated with me as a kid. I had alot of fun moments partying with adults alongside my best friend that were mad dangerous upon hindsight.
Perhaps exactly because it was written by people within the target demographic, naturally refined with time. Which is key to resonate with an audience.
My mom was a casting director in Vancouver when Seth Rogen was a teenager and he would ask her to read this script constantly. She never did. Huge mistake on her part 😂
Easily one of the best comedies of all time. It really says something when a raunchy teen boy fantasy has so much heart and soul that a bunch of teen girls (me and my friends) could watch this film and laugh, cry and adore it. I was the perfect age to see it when it came out🥳 and I still love it now.
I was 16 when that movie came about and it resonated so much with me. The joy and excitement of underage drinking (from Ireland), parties, school and the very real quest to lose your virginity before you left for college! To this day when I watch that movie it's such a Nostalgia trip 🙂
I was 7 when this movie released so i think i watched it when I was 12 or something and I loved this movie. Project X kind of reminds me of Super bad a lot but i never realized that before Superbad, you’re right there wasn’t many relatable highschool movies that didn’t glorify the heck out of students and villify the parents and teachers before it whereas in this movie, there was no bad guy. It was all a collective of people that just exist in their social norm living in what they think their morality is. I think this definitely set the precedent for Easy A, Emma Stone’s breakthrough movie, which had a similar tone and also didn’t exactly antagonize the adults but they did show how shittty adults can be just as much as kids. Great review, love your videos Nerdstalgia
This is one of the greatest teen comedy of all times, it beats all the boring cliché stuff that Hollywood usually puts out. It probably is Seth Rogen best movie as well, the guy is funny, but he does requires years for his scripts to end up good ;)
I stand by the fact that this is the most accurate high school movie relevant to its time period ever made. I started high school about 3 years after the movie came out and, minus some things exaggerated for comedic effect,, high school was mostly like this in the late 2000s/early 2010s.
Superbad came out months before I graduated high school. We really lived those last few months like it was the last few months of our lives. I remember like it was yesterday and I'm so glad this movie brought home the importance of savoring those moments. Now, a lot of those people are parents, have complicated careers, and very different lives than back then - which is a good thing. Change is the only constant in life but those 4 years of high school sure are one block of unique memories.
You've got such a thoughtful, mesmerizing, and respectful way of presenting your well-researched analysis - Superbad came out during my time, but I didn't know about it, and now I can't wait to watch it. I subscribed in pure awe of the analysis and presentation skills I've always dreamed of having as a student, and even now as an adult. I'm so happy your channel exists not only to provide the depth and insight that directors can only hope their audience engages their movies with, but also to improve your own audience's communication and critical thinking skills. I wouldn't be surprised if every analysis video you make creates a profitably significant surge in interest towards that movie!
The beauty and irony of this being released when I was in high school, was that it echoed a sentiment I'd felt since I was a child. I knew most of the people who I had known for years would move on, and eventually I'd never see them again. No matter how hard you try, it's an inevitability in life. Every move I made to cement friendships eventually dissipated as our lives grew more and more distant, despite knowing that's exactly the opposite of what I wanted. The lesson truly is, live in the moment, and don't be afraid to tell your friends how much you appreciate them, while you still have the chance. I'm glad I tried it, even though I miss them so.
Got half way through your video before you convinced me to pause it and go watch the movie. Had to come back and finish the video after that. Super glad I did. Thanks for putting your analysis out there!
I related to Seth so much. I was a virgin up until I was 17/18 and I remember being the guy that was trying to get booze for parties. This movie is definitely forever my favorite and bittersweet because a lot of my friends did leave for college and I stayed stuck where I was at. Just a masterpiece and I don’t think anyone could have nailed the teenage experience so perfectly.
Man everything you Sade was me in high school it was a great experience but bad and confusing and fun at the same time im only 22 years old now but I really did related to Seth and my best friend in high school new each other for over 7 years we slowly drifted apart things change times change so does people as much as I seen that guy as my brother we both kinda drifted apart and he definitely didn't like when girls he liked actually liked me and I was shy growing up that some how made people like me in general
I truly adore this film and it really touched on some of how my best friends and I were. Not exactly but I definitely understood it, despite having more friends and especially girlfriends than depicted in the film.
Haven’t seen this film yet, I would certainly love to watch it! Based on what I’ve read, this movie is hailed as one of the defining movies of the millennial generation and is regarded as one of the best comedy movies of the 2000s, and one of the best high school movies of all time.
I enjoy the fact that Superbad is ultimately a celebration of friendship. Particularly, male friends who, at the end and even throughout the film expressed their love for each other. Ya don't see that often in film
Me and my best bud in hs would watch this few times a week never got old! This movie holds a special place in my heart and it’ll always b one of my favorites
Love this movie so much. Honestly the last scene with Evan and Becca walking away from Seth and Jules always makes me a little sad. Evan is not really listening to Jules and is just watching Evan walk away. High school is over man
It would have to feature kids who go outside and play, rather than stay indoors, stare at phones, and try to "influence" each other. it would be Orwellian, like Euphoria with way less drugs.
I've seen this movie an ungodly amount of times because of how much I love it. I was a freshman in high school when it first came out and even though I didn't realize it at the time, It felt like my life was literally the essence of this whole movie. To this day, This movie and Project X resonate with me because of how I lived my life like those movies in my teen years. Im almost 30 and it is fun reminiscing about how life was like when this movie first came out
Grew up with American pie, and couldn't relate to the characters, bunch of jocks getting laid. This on the other hand I could relate to, I was skate kid that shoplift and started drinking at 12, always got into trouble and never getting the girl.
This is a film about Seth's and Gold's experiences as teenagers and their fear of losing each other.......... Then there's McFreakenLovin being a Chad for the other third of the movie
I'm 17 years old right now and remember watching this back when I was 12. Definitely was a good watch and miss when old media was golden and more realistic while not being so simultaneously unfunny. Honestly, I don't usually act like many teenagers and to some it sounds like I'm trying to be an " IT " person but I am self-aware about teenage/adolescent stereotypes. I'm not the guy whose tryna lose my virginity or get hooked on alcohol but I'd be lying if I wasn't into things like porn. I like movies like these because it doesn't feel forced or unrealistic. It captures most of my childhood of watching hilarious shows/movies and throughout my earlier teen years of just tryna have fun or make it big in some capacity through the internet. Superbad doesn't need a sequel or some rip-off film. It's perfect the way it is: Teenage livelihood started with a script development made by 13 year olds.
This movie came out when I was in 7th grade in 2007 and I feel like I was at the perfect age as a 13 year old to see it. I wish amazing comedy movies like this could still be made. I feel bad for the younger generation who don't get to grow up with the sorts of comedies. I was blessed to have grown up with in the 2000s and very early 2010s
Oddly enough it was the most mature and deep thing Rogan and Apatow ever did probably due to Mottola’s directing. He went on to write and direct Adventureland which is still one of the best coming of age dramedys in the last 10+ years.
Man me and my brother grew up on this movie i was only a kid when i watched it and it was the only rated r movie my mom let us watch whenever bc it was so hilarious 😭 good times man
It’s crazy. The first time I watched this movie I was in like 7th Grade. And now I’m almost done with High School. The same age as the characters are supposed to be. Damn.
Unlike most people of my age, I discovered this movie this year while I'm already 23 and I feel it still a right moment to find out about this particular
I love this movie because the first time i saw it i could relate to so many things in my life, and also this is a hilarious way to talk about the end of adolescence, now and then i watch it.
This movie is about the breaking point of a childhood/teen friendship and the importance of growing up and let the past go, every time i see the ending my soul hurts
I was in high school when this came out even as a quiet girl, I relayed so hard to it and thought it was the funniest thing ever. Millennials we’re spoiled with this and Mean Girls
I f**king love this film! I've lost track of how many times I've watched it now. But it's just as good each time. It has the same quality as the UK show 'The Inbetweeners'... It's authentic to how teenagers actually act. That's what resonated with people I think.
The Inbetweeners (UK) was very similarily created. It was a bunch of funny and embaressing stuff that had happened to the creators in their high school years, worked into a series.
I think it’s a testament to this movie’s quality and nuance that all my straight friends remember this movie as badass and inappropriate (which it kinda was for its genre and time), but I can tell them it’s a very tender, sweet story (which it totally is) and they’re caught off guard by that comment.
I remember seening this when it came out and I was like 13 and it was the funniest movie ever, then I told this kid I was kinda friends with in percussion about it and for like months hed want me to quote it to him cuz he couldnt see it. Not only did I never go to band practice, but Id also seen the coolest movie in 7th grade and for one class I was cool.

i saw it in theatres in 07 at 16 and it was a treat, the whole theatre wasn't expecting such a funny movie
Superbad was the movie fantasy every student wanted, High School party, going on an adventure running from the cops at night, the sun going down before the party, everything about the movie is perfect.
As a 15 year old I snuck into the theater to see this and at that point defined my young teenage life.
It's the best teen comedy ever. It's a great coming of age tale about friendship that's disguised as a foul mouthed and raunchy comedy.
💯💯💯
It's a great movie but it isn't "the best teen comedy ever". Inbetweeners is the best teen comedy ever.
Not best tern movie ever..Fast times and dazed and confused are 1and 2..super bad is good tho
Kinda like high school with your friends is.
“How can I manage life without you” so good! Legitimately how I felt when my middle school friends and I realized we weren’t going go the same high school. Back in 2005 btw 😂
This movie fittingly came out my Senior Year of HS. It felt like it was my farewell song to that era of my life.
It's sad that even best friends drift apart because of life, but I love how they came back together to make this modern day classic 🔥
HAHA that’s so good… but fate!! judd apatow was meant to create this film
Easily one of the best comedies of all time. It really says something when a raunchy teen boy fantasy has so much heart and soul that a bunch of teen girls (me and my friends) could watch this film and laugh, cry and adore it. I was the perfect age to see it when it came out🥳 and I still love it now.
This is simply how writing a good anything works. Writing is rewriting. Right down to the act of just reflecting on your old work.
I been Watching this movie around 5+ times each year for the past 15 years.
It´s so amazing it will never ever be topped.
When am I gonna need to cook tiramisu?
I never laughs so much in my life while watching this brilliant movie. It's just ridiculous how good it is.
I was 16 when that movie came about and it resonated so much with me. The joy and excitement of underage drinking (from Ireland), parties, school and the very real quest to lose your virginity before you left for college! To this day when I watch that movie it's such a Nostalgia trip 🙂
This was one of my first few hollywood movies and it was absolutely hilarious and engaging.
15 years old and still a great movie!👍👍
This movie defines my youth, and it was the first time I saw Emma Stone and fell in love with her.
Same
I wanna watch this movie again now... Superbadly.
It probably is Seth Rogen best movie as well, the guy is funny, but he does requires years for his scripts to end up good ;)
I was 31 when this came out and loved it. Teen movies never get old.
This is so kind of you! Thank you
The beauty and irony of this being released when I was in high school, was that it echoed a sentiment I'd felt since I was a child.
I was 15 when I saw this and it's still my favorite movie Seth Rogen has ever done
Fr I'm still a teenager but only for a few months and this movie really hits home
I had to sneak into this movie as a kid to see it with my friends. Since that moment, it has been and remains my favorite comedy movie of all time.
They filmed this movie all around my neighborhood. I can't believe how old it is.
I was 17 when this movie came out, I've never laugh so hard at a movie since, Michael Cera was literally me in high school even looked like me.
I've had this idea of a fantasy sci-fi world in my head since I was in 4th grade. It would be mental to write but I've got all the basics in my mind.
Ooo! What kind of media are you wanting to turn it into?
Write things down my dude!
believe in yourself! You can definitely do it, you just got to *start doing* it.
Yo same 😭
This movie is literally a classic, and always will be. Crazy how good it was
One of my favorite movies of all time
I truly adore this film and it really touched on some of how my best friends and I were.
How could someone not of seen Superbad in the year 2022? Get on it, seriously!
I'm jealous
It’s one of my shameful pleasures. One of the few movies of the last 20 years I’ve seen multiple times.
@@BillLaBrie nahh this movie is too good to be a shameful pleasure 😅😅
@@Magdalena8008s maybe I just don’t watch too many comedies? Even though I should.
Movie came out my senior year of highschool. Definitely was loved by my entire class and still hilarious to this day
Even for me as a brazillian student, this movie is one of the most relatable I’ve ever seen. Amazing perfomance by Jonah Hill and the hole cast.
I enjoy the fact that Superbad is ultimately a celebration of friendship. Particularly, male friends who, at the end and even throughout the film expressed their love for each other. Ya don't see that often in film
My favorite movie of all time. It's the perfect coming of age movie imo.
One of my favorite movies. Ever. So much nostalgia. I loved it.
Legendary comedy. In Russian dubbing McLovin was translated as "МакТрахер" (basically - McFucker) which made the whole movie even more hilarious.
Me and my best bud in hs would watch this few times a week never got old! This movie holds a special place in my heart and it’ll always b one of my favorites
This was the last movie I saw with my dad 😢, glad it was this one!
The best comedy film of all time. I must've watched this more times than any other film and yet I still can't help but laugh whenever I do.
Love this movie. Haven’t seen it in a while, I’ll have to watch it again. Great video.
Love this movie so much. Honestly the last scene with Evan and Becca walking away from Seth and Jules always makes me a little sad. Evan is not really listening to Jules and is just watching Evan walk away. High school is over man
the dislikes are 9 year olds who got scared by the swear words.
Legendary movie!
We need more films like this geared but towards young men in the 2020s.
It’s gonna be 10x more depressing and boring if realistic. The Netflix show grand army had a very accurate description of late 2010’s teenage life
It would have to feature kids who go outside and play, rather than stay indoors, stare at phones, and try to "influence" each other. it would be Orwellian, like Euphoria with way less drugs.
This and step brothers are my 2 greatest comedy movies of all time and they were right during my high school years
It's still one of my favorites simply because it captures the awkwardness of high-school so accurately.
This is my most watched movie of all time
This is a film about Seth's and Gold's experiences as teenagers and their fear of losing each other..........
I'm not sure kids nowadays get to see R rated movies regularly. PG-13 seems to rule the roost, movie-wise.
Greatest movies become a part of your life that you remember later fondly.. This one was one of them for me
I remember sneaky watching this on dvd when I wasn’t supposed to be watching it😂😂 this movie is legendary
The first time I watched this movie I was like 12 😂 I’m 21 now.
@@DA-db9bi Same here bruh. Time flies.
watched this movie 1 month before completing my 10th grade..
I find something new to laugh at every time I watch it
Like a million others, watched as an adult and father. Loved it.
I was in high school when this came out even as a quiet girl, I relayed so hard to it and thought it was the funniest thing ever. Millennials we’re spoiled with this and Mean Girls
This makes so much sense, I always wondered why this movie was so much more relatable than other movies that are somewhat like this.
I f**king love this film! I've lost track of how many times I've watched it now. But it's just as good each time. It has the same quality as the UK show 'The Inbetweeners'... It's authentic to how teenagers actually act. That's what resonated with people I think.
One of my favorite movies in high school
I graduated in 2019 and this film is still really relatable 😆 it's 💯 on point
It’s one of my fav movies man. It’s great
Emma Stone and Jonah Hill were so good together in Maniac. I had forgotten they’d been in this together too.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Definitely top 3.
The Inbetweeners (UK) was very similarily created. It was a bunch of funny and embaressing stuff that had happened to the creators in their high school years, worked into a series.
Its not bad indeed but the original inbetweeners here in the states is just so much better.
@@carrotcrumbler1863 you have to be taking the piss🤣🤣
@@carrotcrumbler1863 What are you on about? The Inbetweeners UK is way better then Superbad.
Funny part was it reminded me of my teen age.
