  • Denise Labadie’s art quilts feature either Celtic megalithic stones and monoliths - think Stonehenge - or monastic ruins and passageways, each inspired by Denise’s love of Ireland. They are known for their moodiness, emotion and surprisingly true-to-life realism. Each piece is created using appliqué and strip piecing and Denise’s unique hand-painted fabrics. Denise has won multiple awards at Quilt National (USA), and she’s had major exhibitions in the US and worldwide. Filmed at the Festival of Quilts 2023.

I know that there is so much skill and technique, something I cannot do, that go into quilts with triangles and circles and patterns, but this is the type of quilting I absolutely love. Where I can see the picture immediately, it tells the story and makes sense. And yes, I also love stones and trees.

Thank you Hazel. I agree, appliqué is a brilliant technique when it comes to making picture art quilts particularly in Denise’s work. Her choice of colours and textures make the work so realistic.
I’m so glad you enjoyed watching 😊.

@@ArnoldsAttic loved it. I am busy with my second only quilt, a story photo quilt. My first quilt took two years. This one, so far 18 months and I have to finish in 4 weeks because I brought it to Croatia to my son. Both are reversible queen sized totally hand sewn. On the current quilt I have about 45 photos on a film reel strip that I am just about to sew on the already finished quilt. The backing is a piecing of my son’s old gangsta hoodies of irregular blocks. I thought it was best to put a fusible on the photos, and I did which made it stiff. But because it is meant to go on a bed, I didn’t want the photos, which are 4x5, to ruffle and crease. I wish I knew about your channel 8 months ago. Thank you.

Beautiful. I am a new quilter. Do the larger appliqués have double sided fusible? Thank you.

Denise refers to using fabric glue to place her work. It enables the fabric to be removed and repositioned.
Some appliqué pieces have turned edges to create a crisp edge to the ‘stone’. Other pieces have raw edges to create a softer edge.
I think the fabric glue might be this one

I am not overly impressed with displays of technique, I much prefer imagination
