I'm sick and tired of listening to flamenco in every documentary or news about Spain. It is a cliché of extreme intellectual laziness. What about playing "La Cucaracha" for news about Mexico or "God save the Queen" in every documentary about the UK?

Well that mayor is one of the smartest politicians I've listened to. You can't spend what you don't have. Just like in a family. So sensible.

There are abandoned developments all over my area in Spain from 2008. Now with brexit they're being joined by abandoned houses and apartments left by returning brits. The banks only want them back if all the debts are paid because the debt follows the house, so if you buy a house with debt on it, you have to pay the debt..

      That’s correct!

It's amazing how shitty the situation is. Hold tough Spain! Holy crap Richard Quest is annoying. He's cringe worthy to a degree almost exceeding the financial crisis itself...

When you have free money given by other people (Northern EU countries) to burocratics in Spain who are incompetent which is the norm for this part of the world, you get this, I have traveled the length and breadth of Spain and seen whole towns empty, industrial estates not used even an airport 90% built not used, roads that go nowhere. They don't call Spain one of the PIGS (Portugal, Italy,Greece and Spain) Nations in the EU for nothing.

The properties have no infrastructure, no water, electricity, sanitation, or even street lights, many don't have roads adopted for access, you wouldn't want to make your home in such a place.

I’m sure houses are expensive. They could sell to a private company to take over but they won’t accept the price. They have to take a loss but don’t want to. The houses migtht be sold for half the building cost.

    • @markdonovan1540

Not much to understand really. They are unoccupied, many are incomplete constructions or have no street services like lighting etc. They are often built away from the nearest town and so have no public transport links. The police don't bother to patrol unless an incident is reported.
Unfortunately, some of those people who gain access to these properties choose to rip out any valuable materials to sell to make money, while others use them for temporary shelter. I live in Spain and I've seen these things for myself. This doesn't just apply to mainland Spain, but you'll also find it on some of the Canary Islands too.
Contractors obtained huge subsides and upfront payments (crazy!), but they couldn't "cash in" until the main structure was built. As a result, many did just that and then convienently disappeared without completion. The laws enabled constructors to get away with it. Town halls were powerless to stop this and don't have the resources or legal framework to reprocess the properties and provide much needed affordable housing. The banks sit on the loans and mortgages and the whole country runs on massive debt (over 100% of GDP). This has been going on for decades and the EU keeps pouring money in. When that stops, there will be lots of crying and shouting and possibly worse.

Everyone in spain is given a fair chance, everyone is given schooling, healthcare and support financially, those who work hard and make their own money have the right to live their lives in wealth and prosperity, it's a right to keep what you have earned without it being taken by the state and given to others

Is there something about the Spanish language which destroys a human's ability to properly run a country? Regardless of natural resources, it seems that nearly every Spanish speaking country is a corrupt economic mess.
