Jodi Picoult discusses "Small Great Things"

The Norwich Bookstore hosts Jodi Picoult for the pre-publication launch of her new book, Small Great Things.
Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than 20 years experience. During her shift, she begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she's been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don't want Ruth, who is African-American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene? Ruth hesitates before performing CPR and, as a result, is charged with a serious crime. With empathy, intelligence, and candor, Jodi Picoult tackles race, privilege, prejudice, justice, and compassion and doesn't offer easy answers.
Of Small Great Things, Jodi says: "I really had to explore my own beliefs and my own biases and learn a lot about myself and privileges that I've had that I'd never noticed before," she said. "It's been a story I've wanted to tell for a long time and I didn’t know the right way to tell it. And when I finally felt like I cracked that, it was the right time." this book was amazing just like all your others. The back of my copy said it had a surprise ending and I saw that about halfway through SMG and then after I finished I realized that was for leaving time.
