  • Timothy Treadwell (born Timothy William Dexter; April 29, 1957 - October 5, 2003) was an American bear enthusiast, environmentalist, documentary filmmaker, and founder of the bear-protection organization Grizzly People. He lived among coastal brown bears or grizzlies (Ursus arctos) in Katmai National Park, Alaska for 13 summers. On October 5, 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were killed and almost fully eaten by a 28-year-old male bear, named "The Machine", whose stomach was later found to contain human remains and clothing.

The fact that he was able to essentially live amongst Grizzlies for as long as he did is nothing short of remarkable. The fact that he thought that by simply maintaining his sense of "mutual respect" is precisely where he erred imo. Yes, you must have plenty of respect for any and all wildlife in any given area, but to expect them to automatically repay that to you is pretty foolish I'd say

That's sad the Bear was killed for being hungry and starving to death , just because he was stupid and didn't leave when he should of known to get the h*ll out of there when he saw that those weren't the Bears that were use to him being around and he should of known better if not for himself at least for the safety of his girlfriend . I have seen stuff about him before even the movie but your video was great , thanks for reminding me of this and if he was gonna protect them from poaching , how did he think he was gonna protect them or himself with no gun or anything ? Maybe he wasn't thinking straight , because I love all animals and that would be cool to do what he did , but he should of had the electric fence and a gun or two or three and bear spray and telling off the park rangers was stupid, animals rule all right and they showed him he didn't conquer them and he had to learn the hard way which was really awful poor guy and his girlfriend that recording of them sounded beyond horrifying and she should of made a run for it because she should of known he wasn't gonna make it. For anybody wondering that isn’t the real audio very few people have heard the real deal or seen the coroners photos that is just a dramatic reenactment based on the transcripts in reality the bear was almost silent throughout the ordeal and it was raining hard these sound like bear fighting noises or something. This story is so tragic because it was so preventable they warned him over and over I’m all about breaking the rules especially if you think it’s a just cause if you want to put yourself in danger have at it but when your putting innocent people and animals in danger you need to do everything you can to keep them safe so what if you felt bad about the bear spray it might be unpleasant but you both survive the ordeal and avoid something like this happening. The guy was completely delusional these animals didn’t see him as a friend they simply tolerated his presence because their was enough of their natural food sources around for supposedly knowing so much about bears clearly there is a lot he didn’t comprehend because his actions lack any common sense. He wasn’t protecting anything but his own ego he was doing this for his own selfish reasons and didn’t care about potential danger to others because of his delusions thinking he was one of them or because they were friends they wouldn’t hurt him he knew better than to go back that Kate in the year the latest he had ever been he knew better than to camp where he was coming almost guaranteeing to startle a couple bears which is the last thing you ever want to do. I don’t know about you but I’ve never meet a bear enthusiast or activist or lover be responsible for the death of any innocent bear let alone 2 treadwell was even told by park rangers that they would never forgive him if they had to kill a bear because of his foolishness which I’m sure he laughed off all the way to the coroner. He was also responsible for the death of a woman who cared about him and trusted him not having protection when you’re by yourself have at it but when other people are with you it is a must more proof of his selfishness.in the end he did more harm than good and met one of the most gruesome ends by animal you can possibly think of if you know how bears kill and eat things it’s horrifying whether you are alive makes no difference once they have you pinned down it’s game over it’s a shame she didn’t take his advice and get the hell out of there and save herself perhaps she was frozen in fear or she didn’t want to leave his side either way she would meet the same fate. Then upon finding the bear it was killed and while working the scene another aggressive smaller younger bear also needed to be killed all because some doofus couldn’t use his common sense or heed the word of everyone around him warning him this would happen

Too bad it ended this way for the people and bears. I’ve only read of one other attack but I think she survived. It was a female ranger. She was walking and inadvertently crossed between mama bear and cubs. It attacked biting off her arm and other injuries. It stopped and when she thought it was safe used her good arm to reach for her radio. The bear attacked again.
As for this young man, I’m of mixed emotions. It’s admirable he wanted to protect the bears but he didn’t protect himself or his girlfriend.
In general, humans usurp space and authority over others. We need to be more cognizant of scooting aside so there is room on a bench for another. He really was an interloper in the bear’s habitat.

Good work on this crazy, yet tragic story. The man battled his own personal demons, and seemingly had strained & conflicted relationships with some of the people in his life, on both personal & the professional (for lack of a better word) level. The passion he had for his work, and the eccentric manner in which he went about it, eventually cost him & his girlfriend their lives. His story can be added to the list of examples of why extreme caution should be taken for any work that involves being around wild animals, and most importantly when it’s the larger predatory ones that can kill you in the blink of an eye. I was in the mountains with a friend and my sister many years ago. My sister stayed in the cabin one morning while my friend and I went to explore the area. It didn't take long before we came upon a bear, a huge bear! My fight or flight DNA and impulse immediately kicked in and I chose run! I ran back towards the cabin, looking back to ensure my friend was behind me. My friend wasn't as quick on the flight, she slowly backed up and then ran when the bear went on two legs and landed back on all four with the loudest grunt.
For whatever reason, that bear didn't chase us. We were simply lucky. It wasn't until we were in the safety of the cabin that I realized how my fear completely took over my ability to feel "empathy" and I abandoned my friend in that moment. I felt horrible. She said she would have done the same thing. We were young, 16.
I think if I were her, and saw him being mauled, I would have left him. I would have realized the fact that a frying plan is no match for a hungry grizzly bear.
At least she might have had a chance, especially knowing that she would soon been rescued.
Who knows what we would do in that situation. I only know of other stories where both people died, trying to rescue the other.
He was careless. Yes bear spray is painful, but the bear will get over it. Having none, well who is going to feel the pain. This speaks volumes about his narcissistic tendency. I truly believe he didn't think this would ever happen.
And yes, his weight loss definately played a role in his inability to defend himself, and his logical thinking.
20 pounds is a lot of weight to lose for a thinner man.
I can't imagine the fear they both went through. I can't imagine the slow and agonizing death they knew was coming and nothing they could do was going to stop or change it.
I'm hoping adrenaline kicked in and the pain was less excruciating.
RIP and my condolences to both families.

    FYI,
One time after I had been out if school for probably 15 or more years, I returned to school and had to do an oral report on Managed Care. I remember stumbling all over my words that day because I had not practiced saying them and had not practiced my report in front of anyone as I was living alone. Since I can be quite anxious, I learned that day and other times how much I needed to practice especially unfamiliar words that I was not used to even saying.
This and other experiences I have had, showed me I must rehearse and even rehearse enunciation and getting the words out. Thats why I wrote you here.
Your topic and story is fascinating.

Yes. He needs to practice and edit when he stumbles. Hopefully he will improve and set higher standards for himself. People don't get to where they do without a lot of practice and looking up how to pronounce words. He shouldn't just guess how necropsy & other words.
Young people apparently don't realize how much work goes into a smooth delivery.
People don't just wing it and neither should he.
He has a good thing going, he just needs to raise his standards and rehearse. I'm sure he'll get better at the narration. I hope he persists!

I really tire of hearing people blame Tim for Amy's death. All these people in the comments who can judge him as a loon, crazy, delusional, dangerous, an idiot etc etc from watching videos, but somehow think a woman who knew him personally and intimately wasn't capable of making an informed judgment herself. In fact, of the two of them, if people's comments about his mental state are to be taken seriously, she was the one who was mentally stable, so 'if' anyone had a responsibility out there it should have been her. The fact is, she was an adult, and she had a choice. Timothy didn't force her to be there. If she felt it was unsafe, which obviously it was, then she shouldn't have been there. We know she was afraid of the bears and didn't want to be there so she should never have agreed to go. We learn to take responsibility for our choices and the outcome of them, regardless of what our friends chose to do, at a very young age. The responsibility for being there was her own.

Their deaths were completely preventable. The point of having Rangers is to help protect us and to protect wild life. He ignored educated local Bear specialists to do what ever he wanted with wild animals. He got 2 people & 2 bears killed. It's hard to fathom how this could happen, why he wasn't arrested for his insane behavior towards the bears. He doesn't respect their space, he harasses them. All his clips make me cringe. So hard to watch all of the movie about him but you did a great job explaining over Treadwell's narrating so we weren't forced to watch the cringey ramblings of what to me feels like an addict. .In AA & NA there's something called a dry drunk, it's when you don't use the drug of choice anymore but you still behave in an unhealthy way. He seems as though he was still heavily in his addiction but switched it to bears to self medicate instead of drugs & that's how he got his high. Treadwell's drug of choice was bears. He got 4 beings killed including himself, that was all ego & addiction, no rational choices or planning. So sad.

Nature can display an absolute lack of regard for a person when it comes to survival. People believe Treadwell didn't understand this, but I believe he did. Treadwell knew he was going to get killed at some point, but that wasn't going to deter him from his said mission. What I don't think he really took into account at the level that he should have, was the fact that his close companion could perish as well in his death cult mission. Treadwell was meant to die horribly like that, what he was doing was going to lead to that inevitable end, too bad his partner didn't fully estimate their inevitable end as well.

Steve Irwin was more careful than people realize, but he had a concussion the day he went in to film rays, and wasn't himself.
He was irritable and obstinate and not listening.
      This wasn't like him.
Since he was the boss, the others on the boat didn't insist on going back and him going to the hospital like they should have.
Instead, they decided to just do some light filming of rays.
He wasn't used to that, and his perceptions were off, as well as his mental state.
In 20/20 hindsight, they should have stood up to him, knowing he wasn't himself because of his head injury.
But he was SUPER careful normally and had rigid rules about how to be around snakes and cross, and always had multiple safety systems in place.
He wasn't anything like this defiant Treadwell.

I believe the audio is authentic because Treadwell had an effeminate sissy voice. So do the screams and wails. No sympathy he asked for it. He murdered his girlfriend and she was dumb enough to for that symbolic ride in a super car at 250mph with an amateur driver

Great Video man ..Thank u 🙏 Greg lived in a fantasy world with no real understanding of bears .He was delusional ..and his girlfriend was gullible enough to fall for his " charm" .They both paid with their lives for recklessness and lack of insight . Having violated every single science based safety protocol in the book for human/ bear interaction in the wild i think those grizzlies exhibited an enormous amount of restraint for an unusually long period of time having two delicious stupid easy-prey morsels parading audaciously right infront of their noses. It was only a matter of time b4 they would attack and feed ...rightfully so .

A comment I read here said a bear spray is hit or miss and it is better to carry a rifle; this is wrong a bear spray would instantly send a bear turning in another direction and you don't have to be accurate as it cast a wide net to hit it's target. Also you don't permanently injure a bear with a pepper spray which is how it should be' we humans are infringing on a bear's natural territory and it's very sad to kill a bear with a gun when a bear spray is much better for self defense.

Notice the blackbirds landing as the"Grinch" inches towards Treadwell, knowing once the bear gets him, they can eat too. Too bad he didn't get mental health counseling before his "Suicide by Bear". Too bad his girl gets eaten too.

God rest their souls. He was an immature man who didn't respect the bears. If he had respected the bears - he would know that he was in their "house" sort of speak. My heart goes out to their families. My heavens, a iron skillet swung by a skinny little woman over the bears head - if she got that close wouldn't have hurt the bear. They needed a gun!

My husband is from Mexico 💖🇲🇽 I still remember he asked me why I owned such a large caliber gun. That's when I showed him brown and grizzlies 🐻🐻 Don't care what the keyboard people say bear spray is not enough to deter one that's aggressive or hungry. No matter where I go in bear country I will always be armed.
Timothy was a moron. He never should have camped on a bear trail or tried to attribute human characteristics to a animal. People will talk flak on him for this but disregard the fact that MANY Americans do this same thing to dogs and other animals. They are not people it's not right ur putting clothes on dogs and babying them so much. Now dogs have no survival or common sense left and without people they'll die because there instincts are worthless. That's not a win.

That’s precisely why I don’t baby my dogs, both are Blue Heelers (which means they both already have Dingo blood) and the one is also mixed with Coyote. If he catches rabbits, I let him eat them, I also take them both far off trails so they know how to traverse different terrain and we’ll walk for miles, sometimes without stopping. I am confident that, without me, they both could easily survive; the youngest (Archie), the Coyote mix, also practices extreme caution in situations that can potentially be dangerous while the other one I’ve had to correct a few times so he understands now. These boys are ready

@@bigpuma444 Blue heelers are beautiful dogs. I had a pure black lab and her parents were both hunting dogs so she had pretty good instincts as well. I converted my porch to her mini house lol because she refused to come inside even in the summer. She just really wanted to run and hunt. It didn't matter what. Squirrel, rabbit, birds she was really happy practicing her hunting skills and loved to run omg. I got her a kiddie pool and fan so she could stay nice and cool.
I know people will read my comment especially the clothing doggie people and think I'm cruel. I'm not. I just think animals should be able to retain their instincts. It's good for them it's healthy not putting shirts on the poor things 😂😂😂
It sounds like your dogs are well taken care of and loved. Having dingo blood I know they appreciate being able to hunt it's in their blood

I have been to that location. It’s the most beautiful place you could imagine. I was very uncomfortable camping in Alaska, always stayed armed, always slept with a Benelli m4 12 gauge shotgun next to my sleeping bag. The shotgun was loaded with Special slugs made locally, to hopefully stop a bear attack. I love nature, I respect nature, but I’m not letting nature kill me and eat me just for being there. If you do what Timothy did, you will get attacked, you can bet on that. They don’t love you back unless you raise them from birth, but even that can be dangerous. That bear was not well. I don’t think Timothy was mentally well either, even though in his loving heart he felt he was doing the right thing. He was not. If he stayed away, none of this would have happened. The girlfriend paid the ultimate price for loving Timothy. Hitting a bear with a frying pan? I doubt a bear of that size would even feel that, but it would make the bear more angry. You have to play dead….not fight back. It’s your only chance to live. If a black bear attacks, then you fight back. Know your enemies in the wilderness. Most guns will not stop a Brown Bear attack, only a big game gun will give you a fighting chance-think guns that might stop a charging elephant or rhino or tiger! Plus you have to be a good shot to even hit a charging animal while you are under horrible stresses. Man is the greatest enemy to Alaskan Brown Bears.
