  • The new Ken Loach film which stars a retired firefighter from Tyneside is having it's world premiere at the Cannes International Film Festival. It's called The Old Oak, is set in East Durham, and tells the story of what happens when a group of Syrian refugees are rehoused in a former pit village and get a mixed reaction from the locals. It is the third successive film the acclaimed director has shot in the North East of England with his longterm collaborator, writer Paul Laverty, and it is likely to be his last. And a retired firefighter with no professional acting experience was cast in the main role. Sharuna Sagar joined the double Palme D'or winning film maker and his leading man on the Cote D'Azur in the South of France.
