RP (or some approximation to it) is very widely spoken among the middle class - especially here in the home counties (the counties surrounding London); a typical situation is that both parents work and, by spending most of what they have, can just about afford to send their kids to private school, where they learn the accent. I lost the cockney accent of my childhood and gained my plummy Hugh Grantesque tones this way.
