I picked up a brand new Eastman AR810CE last week and after searching the depths of the internet for a good set of strings to put on it, I noticed the Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Bebop roundwound sets kept popping up but I couldn't find a good demo of them. This video is a basic side-by-side comparison to another popular set of strings that has a similar life span. In my opinion the TI's are clearer, more balanced, and louder than the other set. Listen for yourself and decide if the sound difference is worth the extra money.

Hey guys, just wanted to check back here with an update. I replaced these strings yesterday. After the first month of being on the guitar, the strings settled in to a nice warm sound and they maintained that for 7 months until the intonation got a little funny (like all strings do eventually). I use the lightest 0000 sandpaper and then lighter fluid to clean them up. Amazingly extends life and intonation. James Jamerson the bassist kept strings on 2-3 years!
These strings never go bad unless they break. Unless your goal is a very bright sound.

The "gold" strings you mentioned are brass plated, to help prevent corrosion. Hope this helps.

That is very true, at least as far as the listener is concerned, however different strings/gear affect the playing experience for the musician, and this can also directly influence the quality of performance, the outcomes.

Nice playing! I use Thomastik Bebop strings on 2 different Eastman 7 string archtops & my newer Ted Megas 7 string. Best strings ever, and they last long.
Hey there, Gminor7! I am curious, I looked on the Thomastik website and did not see any mention of 7 or 8 string guitar strings? Maybe i did not look hard enough... I would love to get a set of round wound for my 8 string semi hollow.

How do you get such a tight sound. I have an Eastman 17inch AR610CE mahogany and a blues jr and the tones I get a really muddy even with the bass or mids pulled out
(Feb 2017) I had one of these Eastmans...and being the zoid I am, loaded it with Thomastik flatwounds...13-53, I think. No pick. I didn't find that the guitar had the sound I wanted, and sold it. But...the guy who bought it came over and played it with his fingernails, and it sounded marvelous. Now I use Thomastik Infeld flatwounds 13-53 on a hand made solid body electric, playing with my no nail fingers and thumb, and could never go back to other strings. And guess what? This year I found a seller on ebay who had four sets of them, and the bidding started at $40. Free shipping. NO ONE ELSE bid on them. Huh? Just me? It's a big world out there...and no one else? So, they come in the mail...40 bucks for four sets. The guy says he has another four sets. Same thing. I win those at $40.. That's eight sets of these things for $80. total. I saved $120. bucks. Unreal. And with my meager soc sec., I thought I would never be able to buy these things again. (I play through an ancient Roland Acoustic Chorus 100 that has never needed any work on it) I dig the RIch Severson jazz lessons on youtube. His Bluesette chord melody lesson is excellent...
I will admit that mine is very different from the other Eastmans. The top was a lot more responsive than the others I had tried, and I think it has to do with the finish (as dumb as that might sound). This is the first 807 with a varnish instead of a lacquer. Acoustically, this instrument is wonderful, but it took me a few months to adjust to it. You can hear in this video that my pick hand was still a bit heavy. Congrats on the steal for the roundwounds!
It's the way the 13-56 flatwounds sound with fingers and thumb that I dig. Your attack changes after a while, and you almost feel like you're playing chord melodies on an electric bass.

I hope you're keeping them in an air-tight container as they will rust in a couple of years in temperate climates .
Nice playing! Nice guitar! I don't know if your less-than-ideal recording setup played thru my insanely less-than-ideal playback setup really does justice to the difference (and there is a noticeable difference even so). You want to hear these strings live to really appreciate them. The first time I put Thomastik Infelds on my guitar (heritage 575) all I could think was: this is how my guitar is supposed to sound! I'm a super cheapskate and cut corners whereever I can (and somethings when i can't) and I hate paying for premium strings... but imho they are worth every penny.

Have just ordered an Eastman AR603ce-15 from Richards Guitars here in the UK. For the style of playing I like, the T-I's sounded warmer and smoother. It would have been useful to hear how the strings responded when playing with your thumb or even fingerstyle. (I tend to use thumb or the rounded end of a pick for softer attack and tone). Nevertheless, this was a very interesting and useful upload - thanks for taking the time.

I know this question will be a alittle off topic to the video but I wanted to know what you would recommend to someone starting jazz guitar (if you are a jazz guitar player) like what things someone should have or need to know before starting? Love the playing for the demo
Hi Azen! As far as getting a good jazz sound goes, I would start by using at least 11 gauge strings if you are on an electric guitar and check out the Dunlop 205 guitar picks. Learning all of your maj7, dom7, and min7 root chord voicings is a good place to start.

Great demo, loved your playing, sounded very much like Gypsy jazz. Strings sounded really good, I'm going to buy the 11's JS111, these are flatwound, tried some on a friend's guitar and love the feel.

What pickups do you have on your Eastman? I’m seriously considering swapping out my stock Armstrong out...
Actually in this video was just the stock pickup. I later switched to a floating Kent Armstrong 12-pole PAF. Check out my $2,000 vs $400 archtop video. It's there.

Great comparison video! As an ex-violinist, I find the title of this video somewhat amusing. A top of the line set of strings on that instrument run over $100. Now that I'm playing guitar, I love how cheap the accessories are!! :)

Are they better in sound is matter of taste.
But difference is huge, I have on my Raven IJZ 500 Ernie Ball Cobalt and they do very good but next set will be Thomastik Swing (flatwound) and I cannot wait but would be a shame to waste almost fresh cobalts x)

Excellent demo. I have been using the thomastik infeld ac113 on my breedlove ac25sr plus for nearly 4 years and couldnt be happier. They are the only strings i use, but have thought about giving these a try. The ac113 in comparison are well balanced, have great all around bass/mid tone while good projection of a mellower trebble. Thanks!

the best "phat" jazz tone i have found is with the TI "Jazz Swing" .013 - .053 -and worth every penny of $25 (though they are only $18 here in Tokyo hehe....)
After only using those 13-56 flatwounds on my solid body electric for the last five years, and only using my fingers and thumb to play jazz...well, a special style comes forward. You can attack in a big way, and your thumb doesn't get cut up.
I'm changing the Chrome 12's I have on my Godin Jazz archtop because they feel so restricting and stiff and substituting TI 12's on recommendation so this demo was really useful, thank you. Have you encountered this with Chromes?
Hi! I tried Chromes years ago but never really cared for them - that's because I'm not much of a fan of flatwounds. I also thought they were difficult to play. Know that this video is for the TI roundwound set, not the flatwounds. I would assume that the same gauge in flatwound strings has more tension.
That is correct. At the same gauge as roundwound strings, flatwound strings have a thicker core to substitute for the flat winding. They are thus stiffer. The obvious solution is to use a smaller gauge of string with the same tension as a larger diameter roundwound.

Best strings out there. I use bebops on my Guild X170's and they just sound great. Lasts a lot longer than conventional strings. They actually just START opening up in the time when other strings will have to be changed. I've told as many people about them that play semi or full hollow bodies that I know. I've been that impressed with them
You're totally right on that. These strings sounded even better after 2 months of use.
I've tried the Thomastik Bebop strings on my Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion III and Gretsch Electromatic and the mid and high range are just to bright/tinny for my taste. I went to Elixir Nanoweb. But may go back to flats. PS - the Eastman sounds terrific...maybe I need to get one of those instead of struggling with string choice! thanks for the video help.

MMm I did prefer the THomastik acoustically, but plugged in i could hear to much of the acoustic guitar, maybe they amp wasn't as high in volume?
I actually did that purposefully. When I play this guitar out, I usually amplify it just a bit so the audience is actually hearing a combination of the amplified and acoustic tone. I rarely play this guitar loud enough that you wouldn't hear any of the acoustic tone.
I'd say that tone is worth the price. I just put a set of their Powerbass strings on one of my basses and you can tell right away that there is a clear difference.

For us here in Europe /UK buying TI strings make a lot of sense. Still dear, but not as much and the quality if fantastic.

Love D'Addario Chromes / Flat Wound strings. They have a great sound for the price. The Thomastik-Infeld's sounded really nice in this video though!
@@AlexPriceMusician GB uses darrio 13's on the road .He doesnt like the 14 set due to the feel 14,018,021 etc.They warp the necks too on most guitars. The few times he did he swapped the first two with 013 and 017. Deception is the game when big money is involved! Idiolize noone,develop our own sh..!
@@travelingman9763 Actually I know a guy that is doing exactly the opposite of that. He takes the E and B from a 14 set and the bottom 4 strings from a 13 set. To each their own...

Thomastik flatwounds are worth all the money they ask for and then some. They sound unbelievable, don't go dead in the first five seconds like D'Addario flats and, on top of everything, they are balanced tension. With other brands I'm always forced to go up a number on the high B and E, otherwise they are too thin and floppy, no body to the sound - but with Thomastik it's unnecessary, the gauges are perfect.
How much would you say you played during that 7 month period? Trying to debate whether it's worth the money.. i do break strings quite often at gigs :((
I probably play 1-2 hours a day on that guitar. What are you doing that you're breaking strings? I haven't broken a string in years
some people have more acidic hands or something, apparently. Also, if you tend to play single note styles where you bend a lot, if you like to "dig in" with the pick to get those particular single note sounds. When I go through a plectrumy bluesy phase I always start breaking strings.
I play in a band that plays a high energy Bluegrass/gypsy jazz sort of style where i am chunking away and digging in hard at times. So that's why i guess. It's very annoying and I thought it might have been how I put the strings on the guitar, but that's not it. I put them on just like everyone else. It must just be that I strike the strings too hard when I'm playing that style because I never break strings when i am just playing Jazz.
@J Andrew Nelson Do they tend to break when you're playing rhythm chops? If so, then it's probably the rhythm playing that's doing it, so just hold it back a little! Even though it's hard not to just get into the zone and chunk chunk chunk chunk away on tasty minor 6ths, you're probably not gaining anything by always having the strings pushed that close to their limits. You end up compressing your sound; not giving yourself any room to accent when you want to. On top of that, if your rhythm playing is at the top of your volume, then the rest of the band will adjust to where you're at. Then when it's your turn to take a solo you'll just disappear as soon as you're playing single note lines.
If you're a relatively gentle rhythm player mostly, and your strings always snap when you're playing single note lines, then I don't know what to tell you. Twanging the f*** out of strings sounds great and feels great. Such is life.
Last thing is that it might be that you have acidic hands or whatever; it's a thing. Try a coated string and see if you get more mileage out of it? If it makes a huge difference, then that's probably the reason they were breaking a lot.
That was a great demonstration. I preferred the cleartones.

I always chuckle a bit when guitarists think $25 is alot for strings. Thomastik Infeld Flats are at least somewhere in the $50's for bass, haha.
Locke For real, we have it easy. Violin strings are easily at least $50 and a good set of cello strings start at $150.

Nobody has said anything about trying these on a Stratocaster,,. I just ordered the 9-43s Blues Sliders,, I trust that they are gonna sound great 🙂

Agreed fully. So much more tone there.
Both of them sound great, but they sound like complete antithesis of each other. The Cleartones are loud, bright, and aggressive, with very neutral and clean mid-range. I also hear a lot of bright upper mid frequencies from the Cleartone which help a guitar cut through in a live band mix.
The Thomastik-Infeld strings sound comparatively mellow with a warm but slightly boxy mid-range. For jazz the Thomastik-Infeld does sound better but I think the Cleartones will work better for some western swing, country, and maybe even for some classical music.
Has anyone had a problem with TI's breaking for no apparent reason while tuning?
Check your guitar first for a sharp bur on the nut or saddle I would say. I have heard from others that Thomastik Infeld can have hit or miss quality but I haven't experienced that yet myself.

I think the Thomastiks were slightly darker (and from my experience once they wear in the tone gets nice and round and fat) than the cleartones, but even though they were darker I feel like they had more... "definition", I guess would be the word. Sounds slightly contradictory but I guess that's what trying to pin down differences in timbre is like haha.

You make a valid point.I live in Canada & it's the same here for us buying U.S. instruments. I use Thomastik-Infeld Jazz flatwounds for my Fender P/J Bass and they cost about $90.00 CAD. They cost about 15% more down in the U.S.

One thing. It would be great to hear the amp sound isolated from the room mike. What we are hearing is a mix of amp and miked guitar from the mic you're talking into. It's not really what the amp sounds like.
Eh, personally when I play this guitar it's always in an environment where you can hear the acoustic and amplified tones equally. This was a conscious decision of mine when I made the video.
The expensive strings sound clearer, but not sure for $25.

$35 and its a very easy 'YES'. these strings are so clean and pretty. they feel great. and $25-35 is nothing considering its importance in your sound and considering you spend $100's if not $1000's on your actual guitar and amp.

For me, the TI strings sound like classical guitars.
Thomastik innfeld swing is what i use. Can use Them for years! Rust is not possible. They shine like new.... Other brands turn black. On a non adjustible bridge... At the 12 fret position n o difference after many years! ( Pushed in- against flaegolet) So value for money IT is!

Whoops, you're 100% right. I didn't check back to the video when I responded. I was working on an arrangement of 'Round Midnight during the same time that I made this video.
I use Curt Mangan strings, I have my own "Thomas Martin Scott" Signature sets. Much cheaper and sound at LEAST as good as those! Check 'em out!

Couldn't hear much difference acoustically but the TI sound slightly nicer (to me) when amplified. Sorry but I was focused more on your playing, which is great but you should consider not using a pick.
I liked the Cleartones better. The roundness of the strings were lost with the TIs.

They sound the same to my ear. I do laugh at Thomastik-Infeld claims of handmade guitar strings. Do they extrude the wire by hand? No all their core and music wire is bought for a wire company.
Do they wind the strings by hand? no they have machines that wind the music wire onto the core wire. Ball ends? Machine too.
"Handmade" strings always still have a machine somewhere in the line but I think there's varying degrees. Look at D'Addario (still great strings, btw) and a smaller company like String Joy. String Joy will feed the machines and winders by hand while I imagine most of D'Addario's work is automated.
Good violin strings cost around $120. Good Upright Bass strings over $500.
Oh I know some brands are that expensive for violin but I've always been happy with TI Dominants. Sometimes I switch it up and use the D'Addario Kaplan Vivo set.
I like the TI Dominants as well. I have them on a nice violin and they sound good and last a long time. I think I paid $55 for my set. The $110 set was Pirastro Olive or maybe just the heaviest set Pirastro makes. I usually purchase Pirastro Gut strings.
I have a viola, and a Cello as well as 5 violins and an upright bass to keep in strings. I can spend a real lot of money sometimes. I do my best to make my sting's last. Things like keeping my fingernails short so that they can not cut the strings is one approach, especially for gut strings. Since instruments without frets are intonated by the player's ear you can keep your strings until they break or sound dead.
On my Indian Instruments like Sarangi I even re-tie broken strings, with no break in the actual vibrating area from the nut to the bridge.
I have a Veena and I re-tied a broken steel sympathy string because I was to lazy to pull out a new one. To my astonishment it sounded normal-with a square knot right in the middle! That string is not plucked but rather resonates with other strings so I got away with it.
It's like so weird, I have spent about a thousand dollars on guitar cases-that really irritates me. A Thousand dollars buys a nice instrument.
I would love to hear you play some of those instruments! Pirastro is great but too bright for my particular instrument :)

Personally, D'Addario Flats 11s are fantastic for a lot less.
