  • Spoiler alert: We’re discussing important portions of this episode, so if you have not yet seen the episode, I encourage you to watch it first, and then come back and enjoy our analysis.
Every so often, we experience moments that seem outside of the normal patterns of existence. Nan Adams (Inger Stevens) a young woman on a cross-country trip across the United States, is experiencing just such an event. No matter how fast or far she seems to drive, Nan cannot seem to outrun a particular hitch-hiker, a man--or entity--who seems to have a hidden purpose. This week on Key of Imagination, we're taking a look at the classic Twilight Zone episode: "The Hitch-Hiker." We'll talk about what the hitch-hiker might actually be; we'll try and figure out the purpose of the sailor; and I'll reveal to you my moment of awe. If you're...going my way...consider joining us on this journey through the fifth dimension.

No show did a better job than The Twilight Zone at generating awe and wonder within its audience. It just so happens that awe is exactly what we need in these difficult, divisive times. So, join me, Joe Meyer, and let's walk through the fifth dimension with Rod Serling. Along the way, we'll discuss big questions and relate them back to our Twilight Zone episodes.

I remember feeling so uneasy when she picked up the sailor. The way he looked at her and how he behaved instantly scared me and I was so confused that she didn't want to let him go. I think she was terrified to be alone and felt more safe with him but your interpretation of the situation is very interesting as well! Great video as always. :)

It's a cute name. It's the nickname that Serling gave his daughter Anne.

Great video! It’s either serendipitous or creepy that the algorithm recommended it though because I JUST listened to this audio/radio Twilight episode on Librivox! I had wondered how the sailor “fit in” at the conclusion, so I really appreciated how you addressed him!

As someone who did more than my share of hitchhiking all over the US, I can anecdotally report that a major shift happened in the last couple of decades. Now, it was never a wonderful way to get around. But when I started traveling in the early 2000s, it was quite doable it just required a degree of patience. Sometimes I'd get lucky and get rides right away. Usually it would take about an hour or two. But then I tried it again several times about a decade later, and it was a whole different story. Suddenly your odds of getting picked up *at all* were quite bad. It's become something not even worth trying anymore. I'm not sure what was responsible for this change, but I've talked to plenty of other travelers with similar experiences.

Hey Joe! Excellent analysis as always man, and I really dig your theory about what's potentially happening to Nan. I also like your observation about the sailor removing his shoes and the deeper meaning behind his presence. Looking forward to your take on The Fever!

Wonderful episode. I learned a lot about Greek Mythology. I would’ve never tied that to this episode, but your analysis made perfect sense. I thought that Nan had accidentally killed the hitchhiker when her tire blew out. So, this inextricably ties them together, and the hitchhiker is endeavoring to make her see that she is also dead and must pay for it. But those facts are not discussed in the episode, and I am sure they would’ve been alluded to.

You know what, I never even thought about it that way. I actually really like that reading of the episode. It would make the parts where she tries to hit him with the sailor in the car a yearning to hit him, something she is driven to do. I like it.

@@thekeyofimagination True! Maybe 🤔 If not a yearning to hit him in a malicious sense, then a forced time loop ➰ where it must play out that way.

It's interesting that TZ took a well known campfire tale and radio drama, and made it into this episode. The Grim Reeper taking the form of a slight, ordinary fellow was an interesting choice. By the climax of the episode we're totally aware of what's really happening. This one is a favorite of mine because of its ominous vibe and air of mystery. Creepy stuff.

The Orson Wells version is fantastic. I had not heard it before until I was working on this episode. Serling did a pretty fantastic job with his teleplays. Thanks for taking the time to give us some thoughts.
