I just saw the hobbit trilogy (extended editions) and lotr (extended editions) for the first time. It was just so amazing to experience and I’m glad I watched it at an age where I can understand and interpret things well.
"The horns of hell are upon us! To battle! To battle, sons of Durin!!" Not the king that was expected but the king they deserved His best moment was to stand side by side with the men of Dale and Bards decendant He gave his all at the end; that's a king worth serving ✊🏽
That is even more so, when you consider how the dwarves prior had almost broken that very agreement thanks to the war of the five armies. Even if in the end, they did fight on the same side. However, it speaks wonders on how the relationship between dale and the dwarves improved under his rule. Much like Gimli hugely repairs the bond of elves and dwarf. Ironically all whom do this was at the battle of the five armies or descended from those there.
I liked so much Billy Connoly's performance in the BOTFA, but he is even bettet in the novels....badass dwarf indeed, Yoystan great video, cant wait for the livestream!!
King Dain was arguably born in battle, acceding to the throne after avenging his father and slaying Azog, so it was only fitting that he should also have died in battle defending Brand of Dale’s body. As a great man of another time said _”It’s like poetry, it rhymes.”_
Dain's final stand over the body of his friend always reminds me of the Last Stand of the Men of Dorlomin. If you're gonna go out, might as well go out LIKE A BOSS!!!!
He was awesome in the “battle of five armies” movie. His Best line was: “ to the king! to the king!” Then he battles the goblins with his cousins. Oh man that was the best scene in the movie 😎👍🏼
I always wonder if Balin thought because they did it once with Erebor could they do it again with Moria. Sadly however I think it's clear no one knew what Durin's Bane was, some probably suspected but you can't plan for something if you don't know what to expect. Along with so many Orcs in Moria and Mora being such a big place I mean there's plenty of room for all sorts of things in there.
Yeah, I feel like only the White Council truly knew what Durin's Bane actually was. Balrogs hadn't been seen in 2 ages, not since the remaking of the world after Melkor's defeat. They probably assumed it was something vile, but probably dead by now, thousands of years later. Very few things are truly immortal in that world.... Balrogs just happen to be one of them.
Foreknowledge is always good to have...but in this case the only thing knowing it was a Balrog would do...is council the wisdom of avoiding Moria at all costs. Gandalf barely managed to defeat it and doing so 'killed' him, the Valar sending him back because his mission was not done. No number of dwarves would have been enough.
@@knjazmimster495 Yes bit they do seem to be a race of defenders. What I mean is unlike the other armies in Middle Earth they are better at defending a keep rather than takin it, their stature and mobility comes into play there. So I think they'd be better suited to keeping an army out maybe even a Balrog, it seems to fall apart for them once thee enemy is in the walls. Even in the history of Middle Earth, many Dwarfs are travellers. Their armies however were not known for one filled engagement, or sieging not unless in aid of the elves and men like at Utumno. That's just my opinion anyway.
Given that I kind of understand the movie & script’s need for a rude, stubborn, comical brute, to have characters more “colourful” than just another wise, powerful hero, it’s still a pity that Dáin Ironfoot wasn’t canonically depicted in Peter Jackson’s film.
Dáin refusing the Mordor emissary's offerings meant he wouldn't succumb to temptation by taking the last Dwarven ring of power. It's an admirable moment.
May be I've missed it but i haven't seen anyone do a video on the wild men that helped the Rohirim get to Gondor in the lord of the rings. Whats there history how they kept to themselves and so and so. Would luv to see something about them.
Dwarves are my favorite race in middle earth. That picture of Dain, aged 250, standing over Brand's body, defending another race, gets me every time. 🥺
I have a couple of Iron Hills dwarves who regularly buy pipeweed from me when I make my yearly sales trekking the East. Of course they buy in bulk and resell to their brethren. Good folks, those dwarves. Fine smiths and very good stone cutters. I may use the Iron Hills as a base when I finally get organized enough to make my grand exploration to the furthest East of the Middle Earth! And possibly I might recruit a couple of sturdy young dwarves to join the expedition! They are trustworthy and valorous as a rule.
I see two major changes: 1.) Sauron wouldn’t have learned about the Shire and Baggins, so the Nazghul wouldn’t have been active so early. 2.) Frodo and Sam wouldn’t have been able to enter Mordor. They’d probably end up captured by orcs.
Beware of old warriors in an age where warriors die young. Dain II has been a favorite of mine since I first discovered him while playing BFME 2’s campaign as a kid
Seeing his father die, slaying the commander of the enemies, and then glimpsing Durin's Bane itself, which at this point probably had become a horror tale in the dwarven community, all in one day! And still keeping it cool afterwards! Awesome character!
I am guessing that the Lotro footage you're using is from the brand-new Tale of Yore concerning all this? I haven't played through it myself yet but it looks fun. Thanks for another great video.
good video, but the audio is on the quiet side. Hard to hear what you are saying at times. Double the audio output. If it is too loud we can turn down our volumes. I have my volume all the way up and still am struggling to hear you. You are not the only YTer I have this trouble with and it is not consistantly all the time with any of you. I suspect it is YT itself causing the issues. So please err on the side of being too loud than indecipherable to hear. It's like winter V. Summer you can always put on more clothing and wood on the fire, in winter, but you csn't tske neough clothing off in the summer. :)
I don't believe your theory that Dain Ironfoot saw Durin's Bane (the Balrog) himself, when looking into the dark mouth of the Moria Gate after slaying Azog. The Balrog, had it been awake and that close to the Gate, would have involved itself in the battle. There is no reason for it to come up from the darkest depths of Moria, and then just stand inside the entrance hall while the Orc army got slaughtered by the Dwarves. That doesn't make any sense. There is no lore about the Balrogs that says they cannot endure daylight. That would have prevented them from being involved in several great battles of the Elder Days. Also the one killed by Gandalf was slain in a last battle on top of a mountain, in daylight. It is far more likely that Dain Ironfoot was simply wise enough to know that Durin's Bane was still down there, and that the Dwarves unaided were not strong enough to overcome it.
It amazes me that you can speak so gently, so kindly after all that you've recently gone through Yoystan, you sir are an inspiration as much as Dain is. I'm in awe, and moved. This video was fantastic, keep up the good work and do hope that there is nothing but light and goodness ahead for you.

Funny how woke people misconstrue the meaning behind fictional tales and then try and show what the author's views were... Instead view Tolkien's works AS IS: marvelous fiction/fantasy - not some kind of woke message. And yes, I know about how Tolkien was alarmed by the vanishing English countryside, etc. - but that is hardly PC, now is it? :-/
@@willemvanstaden3292 Exactly! So tired of this woke/virtue signaling bullcr*p... Tolkien would be devastated to see the current state of the UK and Europe (or, the Men of the West in real life). What's confusing is the proper pronunciation of Dain. On Tolkien gateway the audio has it pronounced DOY EEN. Others sources like on this video it's pronounced like DANE. So which is it actually?
It's a great question, and from the sources I could find "Day-in" seems to be the most proper. "Doy-een" might be close, if one pronounces the 'a' in a low way, but it's difficult to know for sure!
I won't lie. When I was younger I actually made a Tolkien OC as embarrassing as it is to admit. Recently though I went back a made him into a proper character. A dwarf born under the lonely mountain. Horin is his name and his greatest works are Rend and Sunder, Etchers of the breaking storm. A pair of bearded axes made to be used in one hand each. But before them comes Horin. More of a smith then a fighter in his younger days Horin focused on his craft, only becoming more like a traditional dwarf after someone insulted his skills as a smith. This fire would later grow into a need to guard his home where he crafted two things: A set of armor, and a set of axes. Given there shape, and how there first few swing tore his smithy asunder Horin named his twin bearded axes Rend, and sunder. Nearly exclusively wielding these two weapons until something heavier was needed. Believe it or not Horin was actually inspired by Thorin the second, even copying him a bit through his beard, but Horin was known for something else entirely. His way with a axe. Many compared it to a wrathful storm, with each axe hitting like lighting before the thunder. Thus Horin gain the title of storm, and his axes Etchers of the breaking storm.
Yep, Dwarves are loyal to a fault. Just ask Legolas. He couldn't shake Gimli in life, and wouldn't you know that pesky Dwarf followed him to the undying lands.
for what it's worth, i do think Sauron would have kept his promises. If you think about it, the Dwarves having the rings back would have served his purposes quite nicely, they didn't fully understand the nature of the rings, but he would want them to have the remaining ones for the same reasons as before. As for Moria, Sauron with the One probably could have commanded the Balrog to move elsewhere, and the dwarves going home would have again been no issue for him, in fact the only thing it may have meant for him was more mined mithril to be looted when it fell.
@@Enerdhil I don't think that would have been entirely true even when Morgoth was around, all but Gothmog would have been likely to take orders from his right hand. It would be even more true in the Second Age and that hypothetical version of the Fourth (marked by Sauron getting the Ring back). Because Sauron would undoubtedly have been the stronger, no question. Especially if the order was as simple as 'relocate to any of the places Men or Elves used to rule, take your pick.'
@@Enerdhil Sauron never tried to exercise authority over Shelob, he wanted her right where she was. and especially with evil creatures, bowing to power is a trope so common it's pretty much the rule. I am fully aware of the nature of the major players, i have had to replace my copy of the Silmarillion when it fell apart. As for Durins Bane joining Sauon earlier, 1) Sauron had no real purpose for it at the time, keeping the Dwarves from retaking Moria and becoming strong while Sauron was weak was probably just about the most useful thing. But i have repeatedly specified it being a hypothetical where Sauron gets the Ring back. That would mark the moment it becomes MUCH harder to give him the middle finger, makes him much more attractive to follow (don't forget that the Balrogs were tempted by the power of Melkor) and adjusted Sauron's priorities. The Dwarves holding their old power again would go from a potential threat to a favorite TV show, especially if they were grateful to him for returning it to them. I think you just need to look at his history, Sauron has a long history of tricks and deception and genie loopholes in how he delivers, but the Nazgul, certain Elves, even the Numenoreans, Lawyer Sauron could argue that each of them did actually get what they were promised, just with terrible strings.
"As The Hammer FALLS!!,King Dain Ironfoot The King Of the IronHills and Lonely Mountain in the Movie the way he Insulting Thranduil and His elves made be burst out laughing gotta say he’s In my top 3 of Dwarves.
A question that no one seems to have asked nor answered is why the Balrog of Moria never left the dwarven halls. Was it that he was content with the worship of the orcs? Was it a fear of what might have to be faced above ground? Did he fear the Valar and divine retribution? It's unlikely that he knew of Gandalf and the other wizards. The only elf likely able to stand against him was Glorfindel, and he was chilling in Rivendell, so I doubt that the Balrog knew he was around. It just feels rather strange that the Balrog remained content to play housey housey with orc, goblins, and cave trolls. 😊❤😊
I wish somebody out there would make films about the Northern Theatre of the War Of The Ring, most especially the Battle Of Dale. I would've loved to see the Dwarves of Erebor, the Men of Dale, and probably the Elves of Mirkwood to fight side by side once again for one last time.
And so after the Battle of Dale and the passing of King Dain II the ironfoot and King Brand son of Bain son would once again the names of Bard and Thorin be the kings of the north.

Love Dáin's story
I wish somebody out there would make films about the Northern Theatre of the War Of The Ring, most especially the Battle Of Dale. I would've loved to see the Dwarves of Erebor, the Men of Dale, and probably the Elves of Mirkwood to fight side by side once again for one last time.
My favorite dwarf ,it saddens me that movies butchered him so
And so after the Battle of Dale and the passing of King Dain II the ironfoot and King Brand son of Bain son would once again the names of Bard and Thorin be the kings of the north.
isnt it actually pronounced differently? Its not “Dane” but “Dye-in” or something like that right?
I’ve always like Dain and so very disappointed in the movie portrayal of him. He was so crude and without honor seemenly.
I actually slay Dain with Sting. It means I marry him. He threatened to kill me, knowing my secret. I, Celegorn, am Celerie and Kirsten is in love with me!
What if Dáin Ironfoot entered Erebor from behind and manned the fortress holding a defensive position against the goblins.
Iron shoes sound like a very bad idea. Maybe some sort of scale-chain mail or something sewn into a leather top, but full iron?
Hmmm...if Dain "likely" saw Durin's Bain lurking inside Khazadum, I wonder why it wouldn't have come out and horrified the Dwarfs a bit.
