    When Dorothy asks Olivia if she's ever played a dual role, she's referring to The Dark Mirror (1946). If anybody's looking for a good film-noir, I suggest you give it a go, I'm sure you'll love it.

    August 9, 1964. Roughly 3 weeks before I entered the first grade. Or, in other words, the final moments of the best six years of my life. After that, I had to start growing up, like it or not.

    Dorothy couldn't help the fact that she was BRILLIANT! Olivia de Havilland was the very personification of elegance, grace and beauty (and still, approaching the century mark, is!) Sadly, it appears she never fully reconciled with her sister (after seeing so many of both sisters' films, I can't help but think Olivia the better actress of the two-far greater range and depth).

    RE: Joseph L Mankiewicz. Only person I can think of who won Oscars for best writing and best directing in two consecutive years: A Letter to Three Wives 1949 and All About Eve 1950. In an ideal word, Mankiewicz would have appeared in 1963 to promote his Cleopatra part I "Caesar and Cleopatra" and then appeared in 1964 to promote his Cleopatra part II "Anthony and Cleopatra." Unfortunately, 20th Century Fox got embroiled in that project for 4 years and became panicky about recouping costs quickly; the product became a 4-hour- long, choppily-edited "Cleopatra." The movie is not necessarily bad; it could have been great in a different format.

    Mankiewicz could not possibly have meant what he said in his introduction of Arlene, that but for her, he "might be today [he}might be Mrs. Martin Gabel." That would literally mean that if Arlene hadn't married Martin Gabel, he might have married Gabel and somehow be known as "Mrs. Martin Gabel" rather than Arlene. I think he meant to say that if it weren't for Martin Gabel, Arlene might have been Mrs. Joseph L. Mankiewicz.

      It was very rare for John to make an error on What's My Line, but when he goofed he goofed big. This is almost as major a whopper as the famous Steve Allen blooper. Mr. De Martine was the head of a company that makes tents, and in such cases the custom of WML was to simply say that the contestant deals in a product. The only services he performed are those customarily performed by any business executive: talking with clients, arranging meetings, publicizing the product and so on. If John had just said "He deals in a product," the panel would have had a fair chance.
      I happen to have known Mr. De Martine personally. He was our neighbor when I was growing up.

    Also, if you can believe this, Olivia de Havilland has not done any feature-length films in theaters in over 30 years.
    The last time she did any of them was when she starred with Sylvia Kristel, Ursula Andress, Cornel Wilde, Beau Bridges, Ian McShane, Alan Hale Jr. and Lloyd Bridges in Ken Annakin's "The Fifth Musketeer".

      I don't remember what any of the questions were, but back in the 1980s when I used to play "Trivial Pursuit" a lot, my friends and I were astounded by the number of questions to which the correct answer was "Olivia de Havilland" -- it was kind of a running joke when we played the game. Somehow her name seemed to come up every time we played -- sometimes more than once during a game!

    Nearly every contestant on every show seems extremely well-dressed. Is it possible that there is a costume coordinator who oversees the way that the contestant "look." I'm of the era of WML and I don't recall the the average everyday American coming off this well-dressed. Even at important occasions. Or was it a more tasteful time than I remember.

Lol Regardless of what the panel or the guests want to talk about or anything else, John is the big boss of the show and he's just going to push through like a locomotive and raise his voice and talk over everybody and then you don't understand what anybody says. Olivia De Havilland did do a strip tease in a movie! There's a scene in Gone With the Wind where Scarlett O'Hara confronts the Yankee deserter at Tara. After Scarlett shot the Yankee deserter, Melanie disrobed when Scarlett asked for her nightie to clean up the blood stain on the floor.

    • @loissimmons6558
      @loissimmons6558 6 років тому +3

      Striptease is a performing art or an act of seduction that goes beyond merely disrobing. The inclusion of "tease" in the name indicates that. In fact it is/was not uncommon for ecdysiasts, especially in some jurisdictions that limit nude performances, to end their performance at least partially clothed.
