For the love of.... If you were mentally and physically abused for god knows how long because you wanted to be someone and they disproved of it, you'd be skittish too! You're just taking one part of his personality and exaggerating it. Hell, he didn't have to sing with the Spooky Kids in week 2 (he dislikes singing due to fear). And in week 5? Whoo boy, he really gives his parents a verbal beatdown. He'll most likely never truely get over his psychological trauma (rarely does anyone truely), but at least he has Pico. In all honesty, I think the only time in the mod that he "whines and cries", as you put it, are when his parents are involved and that's because he's terrified of them (which is why week 5 had me impressed with his courage that he gathered)
