After discovering Buckingham Palace and all the perks that it has to offer the Queen and Royal family I was flabbergasted to then discover the SECOND Queen's palace, Windsor Castle. With that being said I then immediately felt the irresistible urge react to Winsor castle through the lens of my American point of view. I am very interested to see what is going on in this famous UK landmark and how it compares to Buckingham Palace. If you enjoy my reaction feel free to leave a like, comment, or subscribe for more videos like this!

I live in the UK & have no problem with Crown property. There is much of BP & WC open to the public. Please don't confuse celebrity with monarchy, you really need to learn the history & we would lose a lot, culturally, historically & economically by not having these things. Castles were generally build on hills as this is a defensive position where you can see the enemy coming.

The British people generally have no objection to aristocrats living in these fantastic buildings. To our shame a large number of fine country houses were allowed to crumble to dust in the thirty years following the end of WW2, because the owners could not afford the upkeep. Now, most surviving houses are open to paying visitors which provides funding for their upkeep. An empty house becomes derelict very quickly.

    • @MrPaulMorris

The major issue was death duties. The need to pay a percentage of the capital value of the houses drained other more liquid assets to the point that each succeeding generation was less able to afford maintenance of the properties. Ultimately, the properties fell into decay or were given away (to the National Trust) to avoid the ongoing burden. The problem with Death Duties was that it made no distinction between liquid and illiquid assets; if I need to pay 60% tax on an inheritance of a million pounds in cash, that's easy enough (if not welcomed). If I need to find 60% of the value of a hundred million pound country home that's a lot more difficult!

Absolutely, just like here in USA, there are many huge homes built during the oil & Japanese boom where many came ro invest in America w.their neauvo riches..bought vast pcs of land & built their multi million $$ home & sadly their economy went bust & so did their fortunes, so homes built here remained empty or half built..have gone to ruins, which can be seen on UA-cam.UA-cam.. so same in England & Europe.. many castles were abandoned bec heirs didn't have the $$ to upkeep them, so most is left empty & they too became derelict. Many that inherited them also were able to repair as they went along, bec they've turned them into F&B homes where the restored areas were rented out as an special package for people like you who've never seen a castle wanted to experience living in one for a short Vaca & be able to talk about their experience. Castle owners can use the income to try complete more of them.
I wrote on your comment section that you could talk to Lady Colin Cambell, she owns a UA-cam podcast. She's also owner of Castle Goring which she had it renovated & turned part of it into a hotel for tourists.

The castle is for everyone. You can wander in the grounds free of charge. To go inside costs money and when our family went there, we didn't go in, but it is a national treasure. Bear in mind that the Queen has a special relationship with her land and people. At the coronation, she made vows to us that she considered as binding as her marriage vows and she shares a lot of what she has with us, including her two principle residences. That said, obviously, some parts are hers alone. Following the death of her husband, Windsor was a place where she could find peace to grieve. It's hard to describe the love we have for her. There is no figure in American history that means as much to the people as she means to us.
The concept of elites is an American one. We really don't see it that way. We're all just Brits and she is a Brit who happens to be Queen and we are Brits who dodged that bullet. Class envy is rare here. Every layer of society has its perks and its problems.

The attempt to demolish the castle was Parliament's attempt to ensure that the monarchy, that they had tried to end with the murder of Charles I, could never be restored. Many great castles and homes were destroyed because they were royalist. Fortunately, the one, stupid experiment in being a republic was ended in 1660 when Charles I's son, Charles II came home. He had actually been asked to return by the very people who had wanted his father killed, because they had discovered that a country without a monarch was at the mercy of vain, greedy, ambitious men like the thrice-accursed Cromwell.

Charles the second was restored to the monarchy in 1660 after the death of Cromwell, because his Puritan system of republican government was too oppressive. Those Puritans had gained political power that caused the murder of King Charles the first during the British Civil War. The Puritans that came to the New World before that in 1620 are said to be seeking religious freedom to worship by their spiritual conscience, but in fact they were escaping a crackdown by the British authorities for trying to establish their oppressive version of Christianity over the Church of England.

During World War II, the crown jewels were taken from the Tower of London and buried 60 feet below the ground in a secret chamber in Windsor Castle. King George VI (the present Queen's father) ordered this in order to protect the jewels in the event of a German invasion. The jewels were removed from their settings and placed in a biscuit (cookie) tin before they were hidden. This only became public knowledge a couple of years ago. Intriguing that you think that an individual like the Queen is "just given" a Castle or Palace. Nope that's not what happened or happens. It's a long, complex and evolved history of how the Royal Family was and is funded.
Just keep in mind that our Monarch is Head of State, and is entitled to live in these residences whilst they fulfill the duties required of them.
The President of France lives in the Elysee Palace. The POTUS lives in the White House and also Camp David. They are "official residences" associated with their role. The big difference is that all the Official Royal residences were once personally owned (built, extended, or purchased) by the Queen's ancestors in their time.
If the Monarchy were to be abolished tomorrow, the Queen's remaining personal residences are Sandringham in Norfolk (purchased by Edward VII) and Balmoral (in Scotland) which was commissioned by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria at their personal expense. Of course it's modernised, didn't have electric lighting back in the day. There was a story that following the fire there were discussions about replacing the lost oak timbers and where would they procure such large amounts, one person , present was looking out the window (meeting in the castle) had an eureka moment. Windsor Great Park has lots of old oak trees, the answer was there. Our ancestors lived in a long term world, unlike us, and trees had been planted for just such an eventuality.

Most places in the UK are extremely old, and Windsor ( the town) is even older than the castle. Its name means 'bank with a winch' . ( Presumably to haul out boats. It's on the River Thames.)
From at least the thirteenth century it was a favourite residenceof our Kings, at least two (Edward III and Henry VI) being born there. After 1534 we had trouble with absolutist, tyrannical Roman Catholic monarchies, so to find suitable Protestant royalty our royals kept marrying German princes.
Now the Dukes of Saxony, in Germany, split their lands up, and one branch of these Dukes were those reigning in the German towns of Coburg and Gotha. Using the French for Saxony this was shortened to " Saxe-Coburg-Gotha"; so when Queen Victoria married into this line, her son and grandson had this as the family name.
Now, in 1917, we were fighting an appalling war with Germany , so King George V changed the name of his family to Windsor, because of the long association of the Castle with our royals down the centuries.
Parts of the Castle have a nineteenth-century exterior, because George IV had it extensively renovated; but after the 1992 fire it was discovered that behind that exterior the mediaeval masonry was still there.
I don't think people mind too much the Queen living there, because the magnificent State Rooms are often open to visitors. Much of its huge park, Windsor Great Park, is also often accessible.
The Castle 's 'Chapel' - St George's Chapel, the size of a big Church - is fourteenth-century and beautiful. In 1348 Edward III founded a great Order of Chivalry, the 'Order of the Garter', and the banners of the Garter Knights are displayed there. The Queen attends the magnificent Garter ceremony there in June each year.

Windsor Castle is a Crown property, not owned by the royal family, but is exclusively for the use of the ruling monarch, like Buckingham Palace. Castles are fortified houses, they are never palaces in the UK. The Widsors own Sandringham House in Norfolk and Balmoral Castle, Scotland, outright.

@@Dan.Dawson yeah when she first became queen there was apparently a minor disagreement between herself and Winston Churchill who was still prime minister at the time.
The Queen and Prince Phillip wanted to make Clarence house there new official royal residence as they were already living there before the death of her father and they had just spent a year or so completely redecorating and remodeling it and didnt see the point of moving out just as it was finally finished.
There was also the suggestion that they felt much more at home as a family in Clarence House as many of the royals only associated Buckingham palace with tragic events.
However Churchill and the government believed that the long association of the royal family with Buckingham palace ever since the days of Queen Victoria and all through the long trials of both world wars was too strong.
They were worried that with the abdication of her uncle still in living memory and with a young and untested queen on the throne for the first time since Victoria, that the monarchy couldnt afford to make any major deviations from tradition and risk rocking the boat for the royals and for the government.

Windsor Castle, named for the town of Windsor in which it stands, had long been the favourite residence of the royal family and is also right in the town of Windsor, so is loved by the people. The current lot were called Saxe-Coburg & Gotha, after Queen Victoria's German husband Prince Albert. Until World War 1, and then it was felt a German Royal Family name was a bit unpatriotic. 1:03 a castle would be more fortified. They were originally built as military centres back in the days when local aristocrats might have to actually defend from attacking armies, be they foreign invaders, rival nobles or during a civil war or war of succession. Also used for keeping the local peasants down. Most castles hail from that era originally, or were built to copy the ones that were. Palaces are a bit less practical in design and intended for the monarch to use as a home rather than a fortress. These tend to date from later eras with strong central monarchies who had their own standing army and didn’t have to rely on their nobles supplying troops... or worry about said nobles deciding to back a rival for king. Windsor Castle was older than Buckingham Palace by a lot, originally built by William the Conqueror in the 1070s, whereas Buckingham Palace started out as a city mansion in private hands that eventually was acquired by the Crown in the 1700s.

Its called Windsor Castle because its in Windsor. The Queens family adopted Windsor as a surname after WW1 so its not named after the family. The Queens owns Windsor Castle as she inherited it from her father and he inherited it from his all the way back to William the Conqueror in the 11th Century. The surname of the ruling monarch changes over time. Tudors Stuarts - Edwsrd VII surname was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha because his father Prince Albert was German. You're going to have to keep up.

I think people forget our late queen always said they are custodians of all the palaces/castles. I believe Balmoral Castle and Sandringham Estate does actually belong to the queen's family. Buckingham Palace is held in trust which holds it for future royal kings/Queens.
Just as when the queen passed away the crown, sceptre and orb were removed from her coffin and she was officially no longer the ruling monarch and it passed directly to Charles. It is held until King Charles111 has his coronation next May.
People think its fine to be disrespectful to the British people and it's monarchy but sure wouldn't like it if we did the same to their presidents/prime ministers or even people. If you don't like them then don't watch, nobody is forcing you.

The Royal family only own Balmoral in Scotland and Sandringham in Norfolk east of England & difference between a Castle & a Palace is that a Castle is for protection with walls and moats around it & a Palace is a monarch’s home without the wall as later in History it was not required as country stable . Windsor Castle was named in the 1000’s Victoria married a German Prince and because it was not appropriate in WWI they changed it from Saxon-Coberg to Windsor after the castle when George V was on the throne Prince Phil’s family name was Battenberg changing it to Mountbatten .All theses buildings are passed down through the ages it’s owned by the State .They wanted to pull it down as Cromwell came in power it became a Republic they destroyed many things even the the Crown then they brought the Monarchy back 11 years later King Charles II .. The Great Hall was destroyed. You can Tour around The Castle , the keep is called a Bailey which is built on a mound the land Windsor Park is Private Frogmore Adelaide cottage etc . Within Windsor Caste is St George’s Chapel where the Windsors are buried and where Prince Harry was married ,Queen Victoria and Albert are buried in Windsor grounds at a mausoleum called Frogmore 🤷‍♀️

Most nations have a Head of State, who gets to live & work in monumental nationally owned buildings, along with their family, & a large service staff. It so happens that this is the case in the UK, which has a Monarch as Head of State, & Windsor Castle has been the main Royal residence for many centuries. Of course it has all mod cons, as it has been regularly updated throughout it's history. It is much more Palatial now than it was in Medieval times, when it's main purpose was as a defended place. It will have had very few windows, to keep people out.
Any Castle can become Palatial, but few Palaces are also Castles. Buckingham Palace is basically the central London office of the Monarch.
It only became a Royal residence in 1840, when Queen Victoria bought it & had it enlarged. So Windsor has been the Royal home for much longer. The Parliament army that beat the King in the 17th century Civil Wanted to destroy the Castle so that Royalists could not use it, as they destroyed many other castles, but they didn't quite win the vote to do so. In fact Cromwell himself lived there, just like a King, while ruling the country as a military dictator.

The castle accommodates a lot of people and the Queen lives in a small part. The town of Windsor dates from before Norman invasion (1066) and was Saxon and there was a Saxon Palace on the site long before the castle was built. So this site has been Royal for a very long time, well over 1,000 years. In WW1 King George 5th decided to change the family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (German surnames which came over with George 1st along with the island of Heligoland and the province of Hanover) to Windsor.
I would like you to do a little bit of historical research before doing a reactions video about anything that touches onto our Royal Family - we are very protective.

  • @michaelbrowne5557
    @michaelbrowne5557 Рік тому +1

Tyler, love your reactions. Windsor Castle is in Windsor (not far from Heathrow airport). When Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha in February 1840, the Royal Household was referred to as the House Saxe-Coburg Gotha. During WWI, the Germanic name was problematic, considering the UK was raging war with Germany. The Court advisers, in consultation with King George V and Queen Mary decided to anglicise the name to something British - they chose to rename the Royal Household to being that of Windsor, named after the castle and the town it is in - 17 July 1917.
Hope this helps.......Proud subject of our late Queen of Australia, now the King of Australia....

The Crown as an institution owns various Royal residences including Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Clarence House, Windsor Castle , Sandringham and Balmoral. Windsor was HM Queen Elizabeth II's favourite residence. All these homes are very old and although they are vast and full of splendour and grandeur, they are cold and inconvenient compared with a typical modern home. The Royal Family tend to spend different times of the year at the different residences. Individual members of the Royal Family also have their own private homes.
The Royal Family adopted the surname Windsor early in the 20th century to distance themselves from their German cousins. They chose Windsor because of the longstanding connection with Windsor and its castle. St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle has seen many Royal weddings and funerals. HM Duke of Edinburgh and HM Queen Elizabeth II are both laid to rest in the crypt.

They have public areas and charge vistors entrance fee, to make money. They also have private residences. Buckingham Palace is actually hated by the RF and looked upon as an official residence, but in fact overrun with rats since the times of Victoria. A castle is typically a fortress, a place of refuge, protected sometimes by a moat. Windsor is the name adopted by the RF preceding WW11 because the RF was at the time, GERMAN. So they took the name of the Castle, being their favourite residence. And what you call a 'courtyard' is in fact a park, open to the public. It is part of our history. Stop putting the RF down because of their use of property owned by the Crown. The fire was caused by an electrical fault, and caused much distress to the RF , as this was THEIR home. How would you feel? Property owned by the Crown, means it is owned by the people/country. Please do not scoff at our country and our history, because it goes back pre. 1100, and is all documented/ can be read/confirmed at your leisure. Some of the history would make your hair curl. A king who tried to kill all his brothers to get the Crown, A King that had 6 wives and was a real tyrant, a Queen that ruled with a rod of iron.Love, hate , wars. It's all there!! Cynical? Where elsr would you build a Castle except on a hill, where you could see any enemy approaching? 1100-1300 no one was safe, and the Crown was being constantly being fought over. Have a read, surprise yourself!!

Most of it is available to the public and the entrance fees to the actual buildings help to keep the buildings in shape. A lot of damage was done. It is not owned by the family. It is owned by the country. The Queen had to pay for repair of the castle with mostly her funds. When the RF suggested that the taxpayers pay for it, there was a huge outcry.
