    Most people don't understand why Miyazaki was so upset by Goro's Tales from EarthSea. Tales from EarthSea is a book series by Ursula Guinn and the main character is SparrowHawk. Like literally, ALL THE BOOKS. Goro has SparrowHawk as an old man who isn't even the main character of the story, it's some random prince and a dragon girl. It would be the equivalent of making a Harry Potter movie, with Harry Potter as a really old man teaching at hogwarts, but the main characters are some random kids at the school with no relation to Harry Potter (like no relative or kid of one of his friends). Miyazaki LOVED the Tales from EarthSea books and waited YEARS to get permission from Ursula Guinn to adapt one of her books into an animated movie. His health was failing him, so he let his son, Goro, take over the whole project. Only to discover that the entire movie has the main book character that he adored as not even the main character in the movie. But rather a frail, washed up character that has no effect on the story. It isn't a movie about the "Tales from EarthSea", it's here's a story about a prince and a dragon girl, with a special appearance from SparrowHawk!
    Miyazaki changed Howl's Moving Castle in terms of the story and characters to better fit a movie's runtime. However, Howl is still the same character as in the book; he is internally a boy that never grew up and runs from his problems. Same with Sophie, she doesn't realize that her true inner beauty isn't her outward appearance (which is described as dull in the books), but rather her true grit, compassion, kindness, and willingness to reach out to understand others.
    Goro didn't truly adapt Tales from EarthSea into an animated movie, he butchered some characters from Ursula Guinn's books, and wrote a movie about some random characters that aren't from Ursula Guinn's stories.
    And from a narrative perspective, the animated Tales from EarthSea is messy, with it being really hard to emotional connect to any of the characters. The prince doesn't really have too many redeeming qualities and the plot of the dragon being a girl is kind of dropped on the audience last minute.
    Howl is truly an almost unredeemable character in his book, with Sophie more learning to love a monster and turn him human again (which is super short lived when you consider the sequel book). Sophie risks her life in order to try and figure out how to get Howl to break her curse. In how Miyazaki showed Howl, he was a charming and dangerous wizard that everyone feared. Sophie got to learn the true petty & selfish Howl, and learned to love him. With Howl loving Sophie not for her looks, but her inner Spirit.
    Goro's animation was beautiful, but the plot was completely missed in its adaptation from the source material.

      I agree with you on the fact that he butchered the books but Arren and Therru are real characters from the tales of earthsea, they just is a 10 years gap in their age and arren never killed his father… and they never fell in love… well I hate goro’s adaptation

      @@minalequellec3123 That's exactly my point, the characters are so butchered that the are unrecognizable. That's why I refuse to even the call them by their book equivalent names. It's so butchered that you might as well call them "the prince" and "the dragon girl" because they sure as hell aren't Arren or Therru. SparrowHawk is more like "the SparrowHawk" from the books, but once again. A withered, washed up old man that doesn't really affect a the plot in comparison to HIS story in the books.

      Pretty cool of Hayao to put all the pressure of adapting one of his favorite works of art onto his son who had never made a film before, providing absolutely no guidance, knowledge or direction, and then treating him like a pariah when the film wasn’t exactly faithful to the things he liked about the original work.
      Would he have ever liked something that was made by his son? or would it have never been good enough?

    • @WildKat25
      @WildKat25 11 місяців тому +21

      @@manu-zv6tz Goro had been BEGGING Miyazaki to do his own movies for YEARS. The only reason Miyazaki said yes was because his health was really declining due to stress. If your adult kid BEGGED you for years to have his own movie in your studio and that he will do it because "you have to think about your health." I think you would hand the movie over to your kid. Also, Goro WASN'T left alone. He had ALL the Studio Ghibli staff behind him to help him. Hell, he had all of his father's previous work to look over, and he sure as hell did copy the looks of SEVERAL scenes from OTHER Miyazaki works. Goro just didn't truly understand what it meant to adapt a book to a film. He WOULD have known if he bothered to read Howl's Moving Castle, then see how his Father adapted it. My bet is that Goro DIDN'T READ any of the Tales from EarthSea books and just Wikipedia/sparknotes the books so that he could learn about some of the various characters in the books themselves. Then he just grabbed a couple of characters and hamfisted them into a story. Goro HAS done great movies before, and that's why it is such a shame that he dropped the ball from the empire state building.

      I despise Tales From Earthsea as a film, I think its atrocious.
      However, you're completely wrong about Sparrowhawk (who's true name is Ged), he is only the main character in the first of the 3 primary Eathsea books. He was only the main character in the first book "A Wizard of Eathsea" and played a supporting role in the next 2 novels. Making Ged a secondary character in the movie isn't an unfaithful concept, and doesn't betray Le Guin's vision of Earthsea at all. In the 2nd book, Tombs of Atuan, Ged doesn't even appear until the last handful of chapters, and in the third book, The Farthest Shore, the story is told from the perspective of a Prince who idolizes Ged, who he travels with in search of the reason why magic is vanishing.
      The problem with Tales From Earthsea is that it doesn't adapt anything from the books at all, rather it blends the imagery, iconography and concepts into a puddle of Earthsea goo and then throws familiar names around.
      The Tales From Earthsea loosely pulls from the first book, and that being elements of Ged's journey with his shadow, (Being given to the prince in the film) and a climactic scene with a tower and dark flying creatures.

    I think that Goro could’ve been a great director, it’s just the pressure and expectations that caused him to crack. He needs to try something different. Something so far removed from what his father does that he can create a film that’s all him. In his works in the past I’ve seen how he tries to live up to what hayao does. Hayao’s work only works because Hayao is the one doing it. Every director does something different and trying to replicate that personal magic almost always ends in a crash and burn

    I think Hayao Miyazaki has always been able to produce fantastic works, but is somehow seemingly atrocious at articulating how. Any time I hear of an interview with him criticizing another film, it's always one-line insults with no actionable substance. "It felt like I was in there for 3 hours." "This looks lifeless." That kind of stuff.
    Not knowing the full history, I'd guess Goro expressed interest in following in his father's footsteps and Hayao provided zero feedback or direction for the entire production only to then be shocked that someone's first film didn't meet his expectations with decades of experience.

      you can see a dip in animation quality in Goros works. Hayaois know for being a hard ass, and Demanding a lot. His son seems a lot softer. And you can tell he's trying to recreate instead of doing his own thing. And I think Hayao is just kind of disappointed in how much he's influenced his son and animation. Because people just want to make Gjibli movies instead of their own. And as an artist myself. I can say imitation isn't really flattery in the same way it is for other things. You're just kind of like "oh you copied me, this doesn't look like yours it looks like a shitty version of my work, why not just make your own good work instead of trying to copy mine"

He was asked to direct 'Tales of Earthsea' by the studio after Miyazaki had one of those "I'm retired" moments. To find out that it was not Hayao Miyzaki, but his son Goro, that made the the film was heartbreaking, as the shear embarrassment of making such a movie would put a lot of pressure on Goro in the future. By the way, "Tales from Earthsea" despite having the flaws of a not so good first work, offers a really intimate story of a young man in search of his inner peace, with some roughness unfound in movies of Miyazaki Sr. and it's someway faithful to the feeling of decadence of the original source.

    Miyazaki’s and Goro’s relationship is so sad and hilarious, they don’t exactly have a typical father and son relationship. Instead Miyazaki just admits his honesty, and fights back at him to try harder

    I feel Goro lacks in nailing facial expressions and backgrounds with his works. The face expressions in Earwig and the witch are too exaggerated and again with backgrounds feeling lifeless compared to his fathers work, it felt more like Scary Godmother in terms of visual quality.
    Earthsea was butchered in plot, backgrounds were often barren/stagnant clouds 90% of the time. Taking from his fathers work for inspiration is nice and all for personal projects, but not when it's reproducing scenes with diff charas in a movie. Its no longer Goros work but instead Goros reproduction of his fathers work which is why his father was so harsh on him. (a bit too harsh but thats not my place)

    "Go ahead, threaten me." as in "You, my son, could un-throne me as the king of animation." and "Oh yeah, don't die." meaning "I can only be king when you die." Men show respect in weird ways, and I think the public drama of their relationship hides a deeper love of one another.

    Damn the hate for this film makes me sad. I haven’t read the books and frankly I don’t care. I mean there’s a guy responding to each comment about the film. I understand how it alienates people but I think it’s a beautiful film. The animation and world or gorgeous the scope is there and it reminds me of Princess Mononoke and Miyazaki’s manga shunas journey. Think people have too many high expectations of Goro and are incredibly speak with the absolute venom and hate they spew. The film is different from the books, Goro is never going to be his father. He doesn’t owe you the audience anything
    just let it go.

    Personally, i believe earth sea is a good movie, just not as good as other miyazaki movies obviously. I liked the plot and the characters, and it even got me to read the book series its based off of. But after seeing this video, i see why people would be upset about it, as there are some copy and pastes of Hayaos works, as well as the earthsea world being viewed through a somewhat blurred miyazaki lense. However, having willem dafoe as the bad guy is still top tier in my opinion for the english dub

    M question is ...WHY GORO?!! Why are defending him? he had no passion for it, he is not a director, and he is highly unqualified, he did it because of the glamor and the pay. The only reason he was given a chance to direct was because of who his father is. There are so many better & talented artist/directors at Ghibli. Hayao wanth the best for GORO but knows his son is not qualified. the only reason why the Tales from Earthsea was kinda ok was because GORO had soo much help from the other talents at Ghibli. Just because His father is amazing, doesn't mean that he is too. and we should not give him more opportunities until he proves himself. I feel its unfair seeing all the hard working people at Ghibli giving blood and sweat while suddenly GORO comes in and suddenly he gets to be the director. He has not earn it

      I don’t think he had no passion i do think he had some and he’s being truthful about it but i think that ghibli was the one making those decisions because don’t care about finding a successor that much honestly but letting mamoru hosoda leave indirectly set off a chain events because of ghibli’s hostility

    Don't forget that the crew Goro Miyazaki had to work with is the same that his father's one. Studio Ghibli ( and especially Miyazaki ) has a very specific character design style with the girls having almost the same exact faces and body, so for the boys, the elders etc... It's like Ghibli had some famous actors on contract and used them to play the lead roles in every movies they produced. Some say that Disney's characters are to close in design but, it's nothing compared to ghibli design. In fact, ghibli's way of designing characters is so rigid that Ponóc studio was able with " Mary and the witch flower " to produce a movie fairly identical to Miyazaki's ones in term of design, animation, storytelling and direction so was it for the short film " Nasu " which was directed by a former collaborator of Miyazaki. When you watch this film, nothing can make you feel it wasn't directed by Hayao Miyazaki. I think there's no space for experimenting some new ways to make a film under Miyazaki. Takahata, who didn't draw nor animate on his Ghibli films, allowed his staff to put some of themself into the preproduction process as well as in animation. that's why Goro Miyazaki was so close to his father in term of artwork, this, plus the fact that a part of Ghibli's staff, because of Hayao Miyazaki, was completly hostile at Goro as the new director. Same occured with Mamoru Hosoda who faced a strong rejection of his work from some of the main collaborators of Hayao Miyazaki when he was choosen to direct " Howl moving castle ". This hostility made him left the studio to the great pleasure of the old man. Miyazaki the elder is well known to be an a$$hole, beeing rude and disrespectful, anyone seems to think it's okay since the guy made some masterpieces, but, according to me, his creativity is in decline for very long now : From Chihiro to the wind rises, it's always the same motives, the same characters, plots etc... and most of the time, the story lacks consistency and had to end with some kind of deus ex machina. I'm not impressed anymore by the guy, and find other japanese directors much more interesting than him, at least after he directed Princess Mononoke.

    Tales from Earthsea was wet hot garbage and proof that talent isn’t genetically inherited. There’s paying homage and then there’s mindlessly tracing a masterpiece. Goro lacks vision and a unique perspective which is why he will always remain in his father’s shadow.

    Honestly i did think Tales from Eartsea was a somewhat weak film both in its animation and directing/cinematography (especially near the ending if i recall correctly). Seeing this comparison makes it seem very derivative as well which i would imagine is one of the main things Miyazaki was disappointed in.

    I sort of get Miyazaki's dissapointment. His son basically is trying too hard to copy Ghibili style. If you follow in someones shadow you will forever stare at his/her back. To forge your own path you must walk past the person you admire. Miyazaki was trying make his son stop idolizing him by distancing himself. Unfortunately, it just made him look like a shitty father which turned into a self-fulfulling prophecy. He is a shitty father...

  • @OHOHOHCOME
    @OHOHOHCOME 10 місяців тому

    Miyazaki should have taught his son to not follow in his footsteps, that way his son can just follow his own passion and create new things for the world instead of just creating cheap imitations of his father's past works. I mean com'on, that old-timer character at 3:32 looked almost exactly the same, with them even having moles at the same position on their face!! I would be disappointed too if I was the father.

      To make an anology. Tales of Earthsea is like Apple who keeps pumping out identical iphones while jacking up the price. There is no inspiration or innovation due to lack of creativity. It's like the endless Isekai animes, the infinite hollywood reboots, no one likes stagnation.
