Glider Take Off and Landing at Nephi

  • See what it is like to take off and land a glider from Nephi, Utah. This was shot during the 2015 Nephi OLC/XC Camp where around 60 gliders from all over the country came to fly all around Utah for 9 days. We ended up flying 3+ times around the earth and had a blast. I wish I would have started filming the landing about 2 minutes earlier when I was flying up by the cliffs south east of Nephi. What a beautiful and amazing place to fly! The glider is an ASW-27B and I have loved every second soaring and flying cross country in it! Thanks for watching. Bruno

      Just as useful. Only that the thresholds will come much quicker one after another on a winch, typically: straight ahead up to ~230 ft, landing downwind ~500 ft, two-turn pattern ~800 ft, normal pattern ~1000 ft. It largely depends on the particular airfield. Also, the winch is very tricky very low.

    Always a great flight with you Bruno. Thanks for sharing.
    Yes, I did a successful solo and got my G wings - aero-tow to 3000 and best circuit I did so far. A pleasant 20 min flight but more sink than lift sadly. Now the training begins.
    Interesting you took the midfield in the strong wind, shows you don't need to fly by the numbers, as I've recently found in a 25Kt wind myself - a little scarey (for me).
    But come on Bruno, do ensure you secure the cockpit prior to landing - saves the odd cellphone hitting you on the head :)

    Bruno I can't get enough of your flying. Would there be any possibility as technology develops, of having a kind of 'heads up' screen separate from the glider's panel, so that watchers can see the important gauges like airspeed, variometer and altimeter? What I mean is separate dials somewhere in the corner of the screen?

    Once you are airborne can you go up in elevation or do you gradually lose altitude as you go? I'm fascinated by all this. Your videos are very interesting and fun. Thank you for bringing us along for the glide!

    • @BrunoVassel
      @BrunoVassel  7 років тому +5

      Yes! Gliders can gain altitude by flying in rising bubbles of air. That allows them to fly many hundreds of miles in a single day. Pretty cool. Go take a glider ride sometime and see for yourself how amazing they are!

    Why was there such a low rate of climb out on the tow, or did it increase after you cut the video? I use to fly gliders in college years ago, only got to fly a Schweizer 2-33 towed behind a Helio Courier, wow, was boxing the wake a white knuckle event.

    • @BrunoVassel
      @BrunoVassel  8 років тому +2

      +curtisls00 It looks even worse when you are actually in the glider and looking at the end of the runway coming up! :) This was a hot summer day and the glider was full gross weight with 36 gallons of water in the wings. The airport elevation is 5000' and with the heat, the density altitude (actual air density for the day) was more like around 9000'. Good thing Nephi is a pretty long runway.

    Hey Bruno I have been watching a lot of your videos for a while now and I want to get into flying. I've been up in one 2 times but it was with a pilot, which means lots of money each time. Basically what I'm trying to say is, Im interested in flying more and without paying a lot each time, and my local airport offers a junior gliding membership. Do you recommend doing it?

    • @BrunoVassel
      @BrunoVassel  9 років тому

      Pyro Thanks for watching. Sounds awesome that your local airport has some sort of a program. Years ago before there were fences around all the airports, kids would show up and help people wash their planes, move stuff in their hangars, fuel planes, etc and they would get all kinds of offers to go fly. If you get involved there at the airport, I promise many pilots will help to both encourage you to fly and make it possible. Have a blast!

    Is it normal to take off and be above the towing plane?

    • @nahiyanalamgir7614
      @nahiyanalamgir7614 4 роки тому +11

      Yes, it's because gliders have a longer wingspan and are much lighter. The glider pilot can control the lift at any stage.

    • @darkgael0
      @darkgael0 4 роки тому +3

      A bit above the tow plane. Too low and the glider bounces in the propwash from the tow’s propellers... too high, though, and the glider will lift the tail of the towplane, forcing it into a dive. This can have disastrous consequences if it occurs during the initial take off run when the planes are very close to the ground.

      @BrunoVassel  9 років тому

      Lord Auriel We wish it was 90 degrees. It was 101 degrees that day!!! The density altitude was somewhere close to 9000'! Nephi has a 100'x6300' runway and you can see we need every foot we can use. With the numerous fields around the airport it makes it a little less stressful on low tow like this but for pilots new to the west who are used to flying near sea level, they get pretty concerned flying over the end of the runway at only a few hundred feet.

    Another nice (or not) subject to speak about in your next flight. I'm a paraglider pilot and in very long flights, well, nature calls. Everyone has their techniques like holding the thing, tubes, diapers, bottles, wetting everything. I manage to hold the thing pretty well, but it's not the first time I have to land to water the roses. However, I can land almost everywhere. What about in a glider?

      Gwen Walcott Great question. My engine didn't exist to taxi off. Nephi has a very tight 90 degree turnoff onto the taxi way. The taxi is also only 35 feet wide with lights on the sides. To roll off onto the taxiway would require a lot of speed and energy in the glider and most gliders don't steer very well when they are slowed down. There are also people there to help get you off the runway. Going fast into them is dangerous. In an event like this, we tell people to roll to the end and people will help them get the glider off the runway. Make sense?

      GlidingHD You are right. I said what was on my mind at the time. There are lots of fields but they are also fairly small when low. I guess it was showing that I was not decisive at that moment about which field to pick and was really hoping the rope wouldn't break! :)

    oh... so they just use a regular plane to take off... well then what's the point?

    • @BrunoVassel
      @BrunoVassel  3 роки тому

      The point is the 4-6 hours of gliding around and having fun before you come in and land after the plane pulls you up. Gliders can fly many hundreds of miles and have a great time. It's not just getting pulled up and then coming down. Watch some of my other videos to see what I'm talking about.

    I know this is a bit far fetched but I'm legally blind & I have a real Interest In aviation would It be possible for me to get my glider pilot's licence I do understand that I would need someone In a glider with me at all time.

      Is it safe for you to operate a car if your blind? I highly doubt the will give you a license to operate anything nevermind something that flys in the air. I'm not trying to be mean but come on really? I think your best option is to be a passenger

    Why don't you ever do barrel rolls

    • @BrunoVassel
      @BrunoVassel  7 років тому

      Great question. Simple answer: my glider's flight manual strictly prohibits barrel rolls. I am allowed to do loops and some other fun acro but not barrel rolls.
