    Thank you for the useful information, I am really keen to start breeding them but it is so cold in UK. Yours are really lovely.

    Interesting info.
    I've been around buttons all my life, but never realized they should not be over-confined.

    Painteds have NOT been as domesticated as the pharaoh and colored type Coturnix.
    Hence, their excellent flight.

    I think their minimum tank size is a 50-75 gallon aquarium. Keeping them in such small cages isn’t fair, considering how active they are.

    • @Randomhandlelol
      @Randomhandlelol 2 роки тому +1

      They technically shouldn't even be in a tank. Bad for their lungs, It traps dirty air.

    • @kenjiro2676

      @@Randomhandlelol you couldn’t have said it better. Keep them in an aviary or an appropriate outdoor setup. Save the aquariums for fish and other exotic pets.

    Will button quails survive the winter outside if I have a ceramic heater above the cage? It gets about -10 C at the very coldest.

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  7 років тому +1

      If you managed to keep their cage above 70% Fahrenheit theoretically it would work, however thats very risky and I would not try it. Many people keep them inside for the winter.

    Thanks for the information, can I keep 2 in an enclosure with 3 square feet of floor space?

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  7 років тому

      Your welcome, three square feet will work for two of them, if i'm not mistaken thats around the same space that commercial and exhibition breeders give their birds. Hope this helped, if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

      GKG Poultry I've heard they can be tamed is this true, or will they always be very skittish?

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  7 років тому

      Yes they can, start taming them when they are young and treat them nice. Starting at 1:51 in this video I mention some more things if you are interested. Being quail they will be naturally skittish but if you work with them they can become lovely tamed pets.

    • @rockinrich8

      GKG Poultry thank you so much! I don't know if you mentioned this in the video, but what size cage do you keep yours in?

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  7 років тому +1

      The wire cage I keep them in is roughly 3 & 1/2 feet square (weird length and width, i didn't build it), but a pair of button quail only requires 20 square inches, they like more but thats all they require.

    Where do you get pure bred button quail? All the hatching eggs listed on Ebay are from mutts that can come out 6 different color patterns. It's much easier to sex the pure bred button quail, since you can go off of their colors.

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  4 роки тому

      I got mine from a poultry auction. Some pet stores have them, and animal flee markets.

    • @jlexoticbirds4134
      @jlexoticbirds4134 2 роки тому

      They aren't "mutts". All king quail are "purebred," There aren't different breeds of them because they aren't domesticated. There are just different color types. You can still get wild types out of other colors depending on the genetics of the birds bred. If you know what to look for you can sex almost any color easily.

    What bedding do you use?

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  5 років тому

      I use planer shavings (form a wood working shop) but you can also use fine shavings form a pet store, just make sure they are fine.

    HELP! I have a male and a female. My male jumps at night, i have added padding to the top of the cage so he dont hurt himself, i have added a night light and added a box in his cage so he can hide. He still jumps and keeps me up all hours of the night, despite this the female is calm so im not sure what to do apart from givr him to a good home.
    P.S I keep them in a small wired cage as they can fly pretty high and he can hurt himself in a bigger cage but hes out of the cage during the day so he can run around and burn off his energy but hes still flying around in the cage at night

    • @jlexoticbirds4134
      @jlexoticbirds4134 2 роки тому +1

      You likely have some sort of predator coming around at night. I had a hen who would jump a lot like this but my other 2 didn't. Some individuals spook easier than others.

    My quails are more then 8 weeks old now, but I'm still not sure about their sex. 2 are wild color, 2 are silverish. They look mostly like females (no evident bibs on the neck or rusty vent feathers), but there are no eggs and they don't make any calls. What age they shall start to lay eggs? Thank you.

    • @GKGPoultry
      @GKGPoultry  3 роки тому

      If they are 8 weeks they should start laying soon if everything is alright. Inbreeding, malnutrition and other factors will effect when they start to lay.
