    Great video!
Closing the loop! Catching does NOT mean killing !!!!! Sounds easier through the periscope BUT the discipline & routine should prevail. Catch, Reward, Ease.

I'm not opposed to outing on command rather than grabbing the k9's collar, however, many courts have ruled that the handler should have full control of the k9 when taking him off of a suspect...With that said, many handlers grab the collar to ensure the k9 does not reengage the suspect so he is not sued at the end of the day. I'm blessed with a k9 that I can out by command and not worry about him reengaging the suspect, but not too many handlers have that luxury...

"Out" should mean "release-sit-watch-guard". After the out, should be suspect handling, escort, guarding, etc. The exercise ends when the "suspect" is searched (with dog guarding) and either escorted from the field or ordered away. Inexperienced trainers end the exercise with the out command and just walk away.

What shows more control over a dog than being able to verbally out him and he releases immediately?

But I think that is the point, some dogs get it (like yours), some don't. Don't try to force a dog to learn something that they're instinctively fighting against, find them a different assignment. Thanks for your service.

I have a question. Me and my gsd has been training for a year and a half now. Hes 2.5 year and hes not holding his bites. Even when were playing. Instead of holding hes nabbing. Letting go. Doesnt matter if were playing with a ball or hes doing bite work hes not holding it. What can I do to make him hold the bite?

I think the answer has been given in your other videos. This dog is self-selecting not to be involved in that aspect of police work. This is a dog that will hurt someone in the field and that's not right. The person asking the question has already tried everything and if they're a K9 officer, they've really tried everything. Find the dog a different assignment and replace him with a dog that does well with the out.

There's a difference between a Police Dog, a Military Dog and a Sports dog. The first two may well be dealing with highly dangerous and possible armed targets so a highly motivated bite dog is preferable - if an officer releases his dog at a target he is already committed to using extreme force to effect an arrest however in the event of the target stopping and complying then the recall or standoff would be necessary - Not easy. Had trouble getting to the end of this film as the guy's presentation style is soporific.

i have been dying to know how to teach this because i see so many videos of this where the dog does not come off the suspect to the point where it comes off as bad training. a dog has the capacity to learn this as i have seen dogs that are so responsive to the commands that an owner can give subtle commands and the dog acts chill as hell. this should be the standard of training for service dogs like k9 units. If this is not done, people get a bad view of these dogs being used in police force. The dog comes off as out of control when they won't release a suspect and makes cops look more cruel. It would impress the shit out of people for pr if a dog released on command and just chilled. inspiring our police force to improve this area would be a well worthy endeavor as it is nicer than choking out the dog. It is upsetting seeing a handler do this as it is kinda unfair to have a dog do a job for you and reward him with strangulation. Someone needs to make this a standard and get these dogs better training as a standard in the country our service dogs deserve better and i'm sure our men and women in uniform would have an easier job too. well worth it.

Yes, especially when people (bystanders) get bit and the K9 isn’t letting go. So much debate over that and when dogs aren’t releasing when told, yet they are officers, so this area being improved would be very good.

We train it normally with oust followed by presenting a 2nd tug, sleeve or bite suit .. while on a prong. This is a manipulation way no pressure. Same way i teach oust with 2 balls, no pressure. Dogs with extreme possession issues/swat dogs will not oust, sometimes have no gag reflex so break stick doesn't work ... They'll have to be choked off. Just beast of nature and only genes for destroying flesh ... and sometimes tags all the swat guys stacked up lol.

I have a better idea; get that dog and all others off of the streets until they are trained correctly.

But how much do police departments spend for a dog?
You get what you pay for.
