We need more Golgo13 content. I understand there isnt much to talk about for us the English fans. Im literally learning Japanese just to be able to read the manga. We need you to keep Duke's legacy alive.
it crushes my heart but i must say, in a world that spy x family is the anime of the year Golgo 13 will not come back. The industry has changed manly characters like Golgo 13 are no longer what Japan is interested in and that saddens me.
I assume Golgo 13 is doing well for it to still be publishing. I guess the question is "Is it financially viable for it to have a new animated project?" I understand that interests change over time but I still believe there's a chance for manly characters to thrive once more.
Also what about the continuation of gogo13, without the creator of golgo 13 who will take his place his assistance or Editor to write a story or a best friend just like Koji Mori from kentaro Miura best friend
Japan is very much interested. Look at Golgo13 sales there. Rivals those of One Piece and its entire fanbase is local while One Piece is the most famous anime or manga in the entire planet. Golgo13 isnt owned by Jump comoany or any of those big companies. They have their own small company that only works on Golgo13. Disadvanatge when it comes to Anime.
There re many advantages to owning your manga 100% though. The mangaka was as manly as the MC himself when you watch his interviews and learn about the journey he s gone through. Golgo wouldnt be Golgo if it was owned by those massive companies.
"Not totally evil, but not a righteous hero either." True. The best way to describe Golgo 13 is he's chaotic neutral. Neither good nor evil, but having the capacity for both.
It definitely needs a proper remaster. The Sentai Filmworks rips have a bad flicker effect in certain framerates. Normally I render at 24 frames per second but that keeps that flicker in so I had to render it at 50 for it to go away. Hopefully Discotek can get their hands on the show & Queen Bee for they know how to handle these types of things.
Great video! I've herd of this character/anime but haven't seen it yet, looks awesome though. I too would love to see it and more anime done in minowa's style, his art is amazing! Lol the Genma family tree
I agree with you man. They REALLY should make an effort to revisit Golgo 13 and not just in small media or as product placement. But they should give him new movies and give him a proper challenge like he had in The Professional. That was a solid movie, and it still is to this day. If Lupin III could have a huge legacy, then Golgo 13 should be treated in the same manner. Heck, why not have a crossover between Golgo 13 and Lupin III? That would rock.
I really enjoyed listening to your highlight of this series. Golgo 13 is a diamond in the manga world with such interesting premises and scenarios, and it is a little saddening to know it will probably never have the same renown and love outside of Japan. But even if it would be a challenge to find the audience for it (outside of the enthusiast or longtime fans), I would love to see an anime reboot, even if it's only a few episodes long (or an annual short like you discussed). Thank you for sharing your thoughts -- I am looking forward to checking out your other videos about the series. I would be curious to hear which manga chapters you might like to see adapted for a new anime.

Sadly, i dont think any studio or Golgo 13's main target audience of adult and middle aged men would even be interested in a new anime, mostly because the studio wouldn't wanna bet on something that likely wouldn't have any major appeal to a larger audience, i think older battle shounen series are still able to come up because despite older qualities they still have recognizable patterns people in the modern age can enjoy, with Golgo being older than most of those properties, having a really dark pessimistic tone and being episodic i can kinda see why they wouldnt jump the gun, i believe most of Golgo 13 readerbase nowadays is composed of older men and from what i've heard, they arent really interested on anime or even have time to consume that sorta stuff, manga is overall more accessible and faster to consume aside from Golgo coming out on a monthly to semi-monthly basis, and since most of them already wouldnt be interested consuming the show when it is airing i doubt they'd try to support it by buying those expensive blu-rays that fund the whole thing, of course i could be wrong but just looking at what younger japanese people usually watch its stuff very different from Golgo 13 for the most part, i've seen that even stuff like Baki is only enjoyed by its own dedicated fanbase and seems to only have a major appeal in other countries
I've been curious in knowing how niche Golgo 13 is in Japan. I have bumped across more stuff about it via France. That's how I found out about the Gekiga Fanatic book. I'm starting to think it lost its chance at new animated material during the 2010's. 2018 was certainly the best time seeing how other anime were celebrating their 50th or so such as Devilman, Lupin, Cutie Honey, Baki, Golden Wind, Megalo Box, Captain Tsubasa, etc. It may be less risky if it does animated short episodes that look great.
I think the series's episodic nature is one of the main reasons it's unlikely to see a reboot. While manga like Golgo 13 and Lupin III thrived in the 60s and 70s, tv shows and media in general moved away from that as the storytelling standard over time. Even the modern Lupin III anime has moved towards striking a balance between episodic and serial storytelling, not just featuring reccurring characters. A lot of people like to get invested in shows, and binge them rather than watch them weekly... or, when they are watched weekly, people generally prefer serialised stories that have an ongoing narrative, making them want to tune in next time and see what happens next. Personally, I tend to agree with this. I've watched all of Lupin III Parts 1, 4, 5 and 6 and had a great time with them... but the reason I skipped from Part 1 to 4, was because I got 40 episodes into Part 2 and got bored (and I was only watching a couple of episodes a week). I love Parts 4 and 5 however, because the episodic episodes helped to flesh out the world and characters, while each 12 episode season provided some mystery or overarching plot that I was able to get invested in. If a studio like, say, TMS, was to do a modern Golgo 13 anime, this is the issue they'd have to address; the change in people's enjoyment of media. I think they could easily do this, I'm sure Golgo has a bunch of iconic characters, so they could take chapters from the manga and use those iconic characters to build a serialised narrative out of the episodic stories, essentially telling the same stories, but, like modern Lupin, having some kind of mystery or overarching plot that they're building towards in the background, that comes to a conclusion in the last 2 episodes of each "arc", respecting Saito's manga while also using it as a means of telling new stories that both fans and newcomers can enjoy. Regardless, manga like Golgo 13 deserve to be talked about. It's basically a Japanese institution! Thanks for making this video, looking forward to seeing what other series you cover.
I guess the problem would be finding a definitive story that can encapsulate the appeal of Golgo 13. Black Jack 21 managed to combine random stories together as an ongoing plot but parts of it felt rushed. With G13, The Professional was done in the same format of grabbing different pieces of manga material and likely mixed in with new original movie content. I guess the bigger question would be "What is a good story for this character?" I do feel it needs to lean at the western market seeing how lately there's been an interest in criminal characters such as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Sopranos & The Kingpin from Daredevil. I thought maybe the artstyle should lean heavily into the comic pop art & maybe market it as someone trying to arrest Golgo 13. Or my favorite idea is Golgo 13 VS Lupin The 3rd. That'll do something for it at least.
@@THEAnimeHERO Netflix could be a good platform for a series like Golgo 13. I've always felt that Black Lagoon was right at home there. I do think TMS would be the ideal studio to get a hold of Golgo. Seeing what they've done with Megalo Box and Lupin, with their music, stories and art, I think they could do this series justice. Really lean into the 60s western spy thriller aesthetic, with a healthy dose of Jazz and Blues complimented by stark pop-art style renders. If marketed properly, what's not to love? ... and who knows. People seem to like Spy X Family (I thought it was pretty okay), and I'm sure at least a small part of that is due to it's thriller elements. I could see a gap in the market starting to form that Golgo could squeeze into.

I don't wana watch that. They can't afford to let Golgo finish Batman off at the end and i don't want to see Golgo failing a task, no matter how difficult it is.
Golgo 13 needs another series with the same care and attention Dezaki’s films had. I think Queen bee had the right balance between stylised and restrained, but personally I’d love to see a 12 episode anime with the quality of The Professional.
