Children are always fun to take pictures of. They are like small and honest adults. I think it's important to be respectful when shooting strangers (of any age) and since kids seem to be a sensitive topic for some of the audience watching these videos, why not show you my approach? So, in this roll I wanted to take mostly pictures of kids (10 out of 12 shots). I hope you enjoy it.
It is a sensitive topic. I like shooting kids in the sense that a running kid against our relatively grid-like architecture always forms a beautiful moment of joy. I had a great childhood and these moments remind me of the most carefree time in my life. Unfortunately, the exception that is the weirdo with bad intentions gives the rest of us a tough time because people have become suspicious. I've often seen a frame that looked good to my mind and then just didn't shoot because the parents were looking at me in a funny way. You've done a gorgeous job in a very respectful manner here so plenty of respect and admiration headed your way:)
Hola Eduardo, me encantan tus videos. Acabo de hacerme de esta cámara y el rollo que usamos de prueba fue toda una sorpresa jaja ¿cuál es tu secreto para enfocar?
Ed, i really admire your style. Photo wise and video. You're excellent at your craft and I appreciate all you do for your videos. Keep them coming brother!!
I don’t shoot film anymore- to be honest I haven’t picked up ANY camera in months- but I love watching your videos. So calming and inspirational. When Fran and you upload at the same time I know it’s gonna be a great day. 👌🏽
This particular combination of lens and film is outstanding. I'm really impressed with the look of Ektachrome in this camera. This combination is a winner: excellent contrast, vibrant color. You're doing a good job of scanning, as well. I've never seen a camera that shifts the film plane instead of the lens. Very interesting and beautiful camera... looks like it was build to last, too.
I thought that I had gotten over wanting one of these (or other comparable folding camera) but now I want one more than ever. I was deliberating for ages over the Mamiya Six, Zeiss Super Ikonta, Iskra and the Certo 6 but then I bought a Leica M2. Might have to try selling some of my less used equipment and look out for a good deal on a folder. Also I had no idea that the Mamiya could shoot in 645 format. I'm impressed by the thought that went into the design, it really is a nifty little camera.
There were at least six distinct version of this camera from the late 1940s to its end around 1959. My experience is that the 645 option format shown here is fairly rare. The later models, Automats, with automatic shutter cocking with film advance are more convenient. Most mount a Sekor lens by Mamiya, however some use lenses made by Olympus. I've always had a prejudice in favor of the Olympus lensed versions, but my remaining version is a Sekor and it does nicely. Earlier models have film backs which must be removed each time film is loaded. The later models use the hinged back shown here, an advantage in keeping it from damage or loss. One feature not mentioned is the this camera weighs far more than you'd expect, even more than the Zeiss Ikonta of similar type I think.
My Mamiya Six Automat is probably my favorite medium format camera. I used it just last weekend at a party with some flashbulbs and it was a lot of fun. I recommend traveling with a Holga (of the glass lens variety). Some of my favorite vacation photos were taken with one.
I bought one of these on eBay, from Japan -- arrived a few days ago. It's an older version from yours -- I'm not sure how it changes viewfinder format (but it seems to), the pressure plate slides out for loading, instead of hinging, and the red windows have separate sliders (one is always locked) with a separate format indicator on the back. As you said, many versions. It's a joy to use, though -- easier to load than any medium format camera I've owned (and I've been shooting medium format since my mom's Duaflex II in the 1960s), easy to focus, nice range of exposure -- and the B and 1, 2, 5, 10 settings work right on my shutter. I've got the Sekor T lens (made by Mamiya -- there were Olympus-made Zuiko D and also Kantar in this style camera). I've got a Super Ikonta B 532/16 that I've had for years -- this camera is much lighter and easier to use. Wish it had strap lugs, though. I might have to either install a pair, or find/make a half-case to fit it.
I was going for just the Mamiya 6 IV but the flexibility of this camera is sick! Bought one immediately haha Thanks for this review I'm stoked to shoot with it!
Apart from the focusing and the dual format this is nearly identical to the Super Ikonta III (front cell focusing), Mamiya took the strut system directly from the Ikonta line of cameras (already prewar, therefore patents lost). Nice vid, great folder!
I also have a Mamiya C330 and joined in with the folder love (Zeiss Nettar) for portable medium format. They’re great fun to shoot, and will definitely be getting one of those tripod mount straps you have
I have the Mamiya-6 IVb the version which can switch 6x6 to 645 similar to yours, but as you say the lens isn't as good for landscapes. However, after over a year of searching I finally found a (New Old Stock) Konishiroku Pearl IV *1958 which is probably the last, and best 120 folder made in the mechanical era. Picture the Fuji GS 645S but all metal and you have an idea, and the Hexar 75mm f3.5 lens is razor-sharp. All this in a tiny package as it is one of the smallest 645 folder ever made, just a fraction larger than a Voigtlander Perkeo, or Balda Super Baldax.
Would this work with 135 film? Would like to try to use it as a pan with 35mm adapter? I guess it doesn’t have a shutter counter, just a window to keep track of the pictures taken. Concerned about light leaks if the back remains closed.
Thankyou for amazing video :D I am thinking of going on a trip sometime when this pandamic ends and I was looking for a backup camera that shoots medium format film thats not too bulky but this looks amazing..im dont know much about the Mamiiya 6 I heard there was alot of alliterations?(generations) would love to know if there like any differences? cheers from Tokyo Holga is out of QUESTION :D
You should look into getting a Certo 6. Very similar to this camera, but with a 2.8. The focus mechanism is a lever on the door. A photographer in Cuba was using one when I was there.
Very nice review Eduardo. Have you ever tried a Voigtlander Perkeo (also 6x6 folder) ? Lighter than the Mamiya but no built-in rangefinder. I read somewhere that it can shoot 13 frames! It would be very interesting to compare both. Best regards
What is the specific model name for this camera? I will look for the 6x4.5 model. Your camera has the drop down pressure plate. Other mamiya six have the removable plate.
Folders are great, I'm surprised they aren't more popular. They require a certain formality, roll the paper backing, cock the shutter, focus (scale in my case), but it quickly becomes second nature. For zone focusing they can be pretty fast and best of all they fit in a pocket.
My first foldable camera is a Carl Zeiss ikon Nettar Anastigmat 10.5mm, which is a simple camera and it’s way to simple and I went for a Voigtlander bessa II skopar. I like both of them, they are great, especially Zeiss one was being very cheap.
Wonderful review. I have the Automat but would give that feature up for the 6x4.5 option. Everyone should have a folding rangefinder in their collection.. I love mine for travel.
The Automat mechanism is prone to failure which is why I bought a IVb with the 6x6 or 645 option, 16 shots a roll is a big difference and I crop to 4x4 for Super-Slides anyway
Cheyenne Morrison funny you say this because I ended up getting a 6x4.5 version due to this video, and it did not last, it ended up failing. 2 years later and I’m still firing away on the Automat. Mine is actually the Automat 2 and did have noticeably better sharpness on the Sekor lens vs the Zuiko. Maybe the mechanism is stronger too, though most of the failures are definitely user error if you try to adjust the speed after cocking the shutter. Ultimately all old cameras are susceptible to random failure, anyway. For my 6x4.5 fix I now use a 3D printed camera with RB67 backs.
@@thnikkamax Always an exception to the rule, but automated mechanisms are prone to failure, which red windows aren't. Of course, all old cameras need TLC and have sample variation. Interesting to hear you prefer the Sekor to the Zuiko.

I like to know this because I am thinking of buying a Mamiya 6 but as I am whearing also glasses this is very important to me, and here in the Netherlands I can t find a Mamiya 6 nearby. And thanks for the nice review.
Thanks for this video full of useful infos! I've seen there are 1/500 shutters too, but it's harder to find them with a decent conditions lens. Do you miss faster times since you have the 1/300 one, or is it enough aswell?
Grate video and explanation! I'm struggling to find a 6 in good conditions. I've seen the lenses you can find it with are the Olympus, the Sekor S or the Kominar. Do someone know if there is a lot of difference between them?
I just picked one of these up off eBay and am looking forwards to getting back my first roll of Provia from the lab. It's exactly as fun as you say! Unfortunately my copy seems to have some haze on the internal element, I bet it wouldn't be hard to take it apart though and give it a wash in some Hydrogen Peroxide though. We'll see if it's even significant enough to worry about.
Hey Eduardo! Love your videos. I was wondering if this camera has a rangefinder patch or focusing patch to lock focus. Or is it just guessing distance?
Looks like a pretty nice camera I must say! I was looking into getting a 6x9/6x6 folder, as Im lazy to carry around my Yashica TLR when I travel and I really like this Mamiya. Lens seems good enough and prices on ebay seem reasonable.
Acabo de conseguir una, le di una buena limpieza y noté que la imagen en el visor no se alinea cuando está enfocado en el infinito, ya traté de ajustar el visor pero no llega a alinearse en el infinito, alguna idea de que pueda estar pasando?
great video man!! i recently bought a folding camera too, it's a mockba-5/moskva-5 it's in Cyrillic i can't read it... would be nice if that other folding camera you were talking about in your recent video was a mockba-5! love the vids keep it up mann!!
I have a question, why do you do such a good job talking up good cameras?? You made me go out and get one of these 🤣🤦♂can't wait to shoot with it after using an Agfa Isolette iii.
Hi! I would like to buy one Mamiya Six (old), but I'm not sure about what model should I buy. I would like to know what are the differences between models... Your model have a Zuiko lens or a Sekor lens? First of all I'm interested in understand which lens of these is better, 'cause I saw some really sharp images taken with the Sekor and I saw also some bad quality images taken with a Mamiya Six (I don't know if these were taken with Zuiko or Sekor). So I was wondering if the Sekor is better or not. Could you help me, please?
I have no idea. I simply bought my camera in Japan and I use it. The difference in images might be due to how the cameras have been taken care of, rather than the lens.
Hello you say that there are many models of the Mamiya 6. I would like to get the model that you have, do you know about what year your camera was made, thanks.

I like the flip down film plate instead of the slide in one and the built in mask is great too. Going to find me one for sure. Thanks for the great video, love all your stuff ! Larry McCormick
What is the model you have? I have looked at several and the backs are completely different. I like the ability to change film size on the model you have but can not find one.
I love the Mamiya 6. I took a couple of my favourite photos with one, of The Gates in Central Park when that installation was on: www.flickr.com/photos/sesquiotic/albums/72157624887962474/ That one had the automatic frame counter and ultimately developed some mechanical problems, so I traded it in, but I've recently bought one identical to yours (but with some haze in the lens) and am looking forward to using it. It had an undeveloped roll of film in it! I got it developed and put it on my Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/sesquiotic/albums/72157690951627656
Si pasas por España, el tema de fotografías a menores está muy regulado y la gente está muy sensible con ello, sobretodo la publicación. Los medios difuminan las caras. Me encanta tu canal.
Hi Eduardo, cool channel can't get enough.question is the viewfinder have the focus patch like leica viewfinder for focusing or just distance finder? Thanks and keep it up man\
Hi. How bright is the viewfinder and the rangefinder patch? Is this camera easy to focus? I love this camera design but i cannot find any comment about its rangefinder performance on the internet.
Did you ask them to take their photos? Because this is what I worry about when taking photos of strangers, is getting weird looks. Especially with kids.
Nice review and nice pictures! I'm looking for a Mamiya also but I cannot find one except from Japan but I'm scared that the condition is as you described? Do somoone have an Idea where else to find a Mamiya-6 to buy? bye!
Great understandable video, you're hitting the majors when presenting the camera, you're a good street photographer too. So keep on doing these videos. I would recommend checking out a Zeiss Super Ikonta 533/15 or 532/15, they've got a 2.8 tessar lens, the 533 with a light meter. It's german craftsmanship at it's best when it comes to folders..
@@edpavez With the hinged 645 baffles and square rangefinder window, yours is a Mamiya 6 K2. Among other differences, the Mamiya Six Type V had a 645 insert and round rangefinder window.
I used to have a collection of Voigtlander folders. Incl. a minty Bessa 2 6x9 Sold them all to pay my debts :( Thinking of a new folder now I am back on my feet again. Probably one of these

Hi could you tell me were i could get a user manual of how to use this camera
Thanks

Hey love the channel! I was wondering what light meter app you were using
Thanks for this video. Does the viewfinder show a double image that you can use for focusing?
Yes. It’s a rangefinder.
Do you like the camera´s viewfinder ? Is it easy to compose your shots? Does the viewfinder have parallax correction lines in it ?
Thank you,
Pavel
There is a switch under the front of the lens that can be switched from letter M and F. What is this for?
Hi Ed, this is a great video! Which model of mamiya six is it?
Si pasas por España, el tema de fotografías a menores está muy regulado y la gente está muy sensible con ello, sobretodo la publicación. Los medios difuminan las caras. Me encanta tu canal.
really amazing cammera ,(i have kodak retina 1 ..)
Would you prefer this medium format cam over Yashica A TLR? Seen a good deal for both and I can’t decide which one I’d get. Thanks.
Hi Eduardo, cool channel can't get enough.question is the viewfinder have the focus patch like leica viewfinder for focusing or just distance finder? Thanks and keep it up man\
Hi! It has a bright round focusing patch. :)
Hi. How bright is the viewfinder and the rangefinder patch? Is this camera easy to focus? I love this camera design but i cannot find any comment about its rangefinder performance on the internet.
It’s good. I don’t know what to comment. Depends on the condition of the camera you find.
Do somoone have an Idea where else to find a Mamiya-6 to buy?
bye!
man i love those ektachrome 64 colours... Stuff is so hard to find and i always found slides a total pain to process by hand. Great video man
Eduardo estaría genial si nos contaras sobre tus dobles exposiciones, ejemplo la que hiciste con Fran que muestras en el 7:02 :D
No lugs on the camera.
Does it have v delayed action on the shutter
would you recomend this camera for begginers in medium format??
Great video. Do you know what specific model/variation of the Mamiya Six you have? I'm looking to get one for myself!
Mamiya Six Type V
@@edpavez With the hinged 645 baffles and square rangefinder window, yours is a Mamiya 6 K2. Among other differences, the Mamiya Six Type V had a 645 insert and round rangefinder window.
The Mimiya Six kind of reminds me of my Agfa Isolette II
George Doscher I’ve got one of those and I thought the same thing. I love mine.
Hi there! your video was veru useful... Thanks I just have a question, Can you add a flash on that camera? have you tried it before?
The camera has a Pc-Sync that you can connect to a pc-sync/hotshoe adapter and fire your triggers or flashes. That’s how I do it, at least.
Do you bring a drummer everywhere ?
Love you videos!
Do you mind sharing the exact model you have? Going to Japan soon amd would.like to check it there
Thanks
in the viewfinder...how can you tell it is focussed?
It is a rangefinder. It has a focusing patch.
I used to have a collection of Voigtlander folders. Incl. a minty Bessa 2 6x9
Sold them all to pay my debts :(
Thinking of a new folder now I am back on my feet again. Probably one of these
Voigtlander Perkeo is lighter and smaller.
Any info on the model no? Have been looking at the various types, there's a large range of differences between them.
I don't know my exact model.
EduardoPavezGoye well it looks like a beaut and yours is the most comprehensive video I've seen on them so thanks, best get mine before the price goes up!
What model of Mamiya 6 is this? I want to buy one for myself.
Might be a dumb question, but can you focus while looking through the rangefinder window? Or do you need to focus by measuring distance?
The answer is in the video
@@edpavez is that when you say the back moves, not the lens?
@@edpavez I remembered the word! I was trying to ask, is it a coupled rangefinder or uncoupled?
@@TylerFetterman4 it’s coupled! :)
I love your videos. Keep it up!
Great Video! and where did you get this one? looks so new!!!
I say it on the video...!
wow, i always looking for compact medium format camera
Doesn’t moving the rear mechanism on focusing pull on the film?
What metering app do you use?
Review starts at 4:50
Hello Eduardo, witch version is your mamiya six?
You have a really nice version of the camera, I'm jealous.
