This channel was my introduction in soloing, and Solitary Defilment was the one that "clicked" on my brain and all made sense. I even bought it twice (first time I missed Alone in the Crowd).
Just mentioning, for a very very rules light agnostic system, I like one called Loner, it's my fav Yes/No Oracle.

@TheDungeonDive I dunno why yt keep deleting my posts made on phone. Sorry if it's duplicated.
Sadly, I didn't get the physical one, I'm from Brazil and shipping is hard as hell. I think I first bought on on site and printed myself, then I learned (from you) about Alone in the Crowd version on another and bought it again.
MB and Feratory was on stockat Amazon here, so these I got hardcopies, and now I need to ship Heretic to complete the 3 ones.
Bout Determiation, I did something similar. My first campaing was a hexcrawl from south to north Grift, and I counted how many times I cheated death. Now I formed a party for citycrawl and to try some ready-made adventures (Box of Shadows and Bridges of Mur)

Question for you: Can you one day do a video for solo RPG game and supplements that AREN’T fantasy? I have been getting into RPGs with a more modern setting and even westerns and cyberpunk but it seems like the majority of the product out there is geared towards fantasy. If you could help point some of us in the right direction on supplements and games for different genres I would appreciate it.

Really appreciate your balanced evaluation of these cool products with both their pros and cons.
Agree with your view of Blackoath's games. They are very refined designs with interestingly distinct flavor. But they desperately need summaries and play aids to include all the essential rules and tables in one handy reference. Plus their new titles seem to come out too fast and too close to one another, which makes me feel overwhelmed and confused at times.
The DMG of AD&D 1e (pp. 47, 49 "The Adventure" + p. 173 Appendix B Random Wilderness Adventure) remains my go to wilderness adventuring too for solo play. Simple, elegant, and effective without overengineering things or unnecessary frills.
The thing with using the Inkwell Sidequest cards in solo play is too much information is revealed all at the same time, leaving not enough room for emerging narrative and surprise. I feel these cards are more suitable for GMs instead.
Really looking forward to the new edition Space Aces.
Any thoughts on how Scarlet Heroes can work together with Kevin Crawford's "Without Numbers" series?
A hidden gem and my personal pick is the Universal Dungeon Adventure Deck (any many others) by New Realms Publishing. I would say their sets work even better than Axebane's Deck of Many Dungeon in that they are more versatile and flexible and compatible with most RPG (esp old school and OSR) systems. Geek Gamer made a review years back. It's a pity that the publisher seems to be in hiatus since the pandemic. Their products are all very printer friendly. The early titles are really worth the money but the later ones seem overpriced.
While really cool in their own right, using all the Top 10 together can feel too unwieldy.

    • @TheDungeonDive

For the Inkwell cards, I use them as idea generators. I don't typically follow them like a checklist. I've never used any of Crawford's other things before.

Alex from Blackoath here, thanks for the feedback! I admit I need to release that sort of helpful tools for my games, instead of relying on the community to do so. I'm actively working on improving this. As for releasing too many new games, what can I say, I have a lot of ideas and it's hard not to get excited about them and work on them. I have a couple of new games soon to be released, but now I'm focusing on circling back and releasing material for my existing games. First is a hexcrawl sandbox adventure for Broken Shores, then some new content for Riftbreakers, and of course new content for Sacrifice.

For me too, Scarlet Heroes was the one system that makes solo play something doable at first. The only thing I regret is that its solo tables are bound to its setting. I think it's a pity that Kevin Crawford didn't adapt these solo rules with the Without Number series. I'm also surprised to not see Mythic GME (especially its second edition which is for me a masterclass) and any mention to Shawn Tomkin (Well solitary defilement is based on Ironsworn so maybe that counts for something :) ). On the note of Mork Borg, I think I'll finally pull the trigger on that one. It's been on my list for a while now and I just picked up Pirate Borg but it's not been delivered yet. I do however keep hearing about the solo expansion and it just seems like something worth looking into.

I played a few solo games of Mork Borg with Solitary Defilement. I think that it achieves what it set out to achieve, which is to say that its a fun game for one-shots or maybe very short campaigns. For me, I had a blast in spite of not really enjoying the art style, but it did feel a little too rules light/lite for a longer form campaign (which I'm pretty sure it doesn't recommend either way!).
The only thing with rules light systems is that I find they really lack depth and start becoming a little dull in the long-run if solo playing. I can imagine Mork Borg would be better if played with mates rather than solo as the game seems so quirky and bizarre that it lends itself to a shared experience.

Most of the games I play (and most of the fantasy fiction I read) is S&S style play (you should see my S&S shelves!), and Table Fables (especially II) work great for that. There is nothing inherently masculine about S&S, heroic fiction, or adventure gaming, not is there anything inherently feminine about Table Fables. On the very first page of quests there is one about a witch who eats babies, and a devil stealing souls. The reason you always hear good things about them is that they are some of the most valuable tools ever written for the RPG hobbyist. I have the D30 Sandbox Companion, but haven't used it yet. Just in my stack of tools to eventually get through! I'm sure I'll get to making a video on it when I do. :)

    Scarlet Heroes is underrated.
Worth it just for the solo oracles at the back.
And if you have any Filipino or South-East Asian friends, show them the bestiary.
Chances are their grandparents told them scary stories or warned them to behave or many of those monsters included in the book would come and get them.

Oh yeah! My elementary school was 60% south-east Asian, so I grew up pretty much surrounded by those cultures. That coupled with my time spent studying Hong Kong cinema, and even I’m a little familiar with some of the bestiary. :).

    Hello Dungeon Dive!
I am interested in a Physical copy of the Deck of Many Dungeons, but Drivethrurpg only has a .pdf available, do you have a link where I can order a Physical Deck, or is this one I have to take to an Office Depot and have color printed?
    Let me know!

Hey there! A quick Google search for "Deck of Many Dungeons" shows that physical copies are available from the Game Crafter!

No links to the products? It's not the end of the world, but would have been nice for anyone who wanted to buy.

Nope! That's what google is for. Super easy to find. I'm not here to help people buy things, I'm here to present information. I'm not part of the marketing team for these products, and they didn't sponsor the video in any way. Type the name into google, and you'll find it. Also, as I've mentioned about 500 times on the channel, links go dead all the time, and then people complain that my link is dead. Man, people really have forgotten how to find stuff online.

Thanks for the awesome video. I see that there are 4 different decks of Outdoor Encounter cards (no. 6 on your list). Are they different from each other in theme, flavor, etc? I mean, does one deck for example focus more on zombies, undead than the others and so on?

Not sure. I got them all and mixed them so I don’t remember what’s in each.

I would be I interested in a list of items you have found useful on Drive Through RPG, I noticed you mentioned it at least once.

I talk about them a lot. I’d just take a look through my solo RPG playlist.

Trying to remember if you played with the Pocket Land cards. They look like they would be something you would like if you have not.

I don't remember, sorry. Things like that also come and go on Amazon. I order dozens of things from Amazon a week, and I've never encountered a single issue with anything. Just search for something that looks good. That's all I do.

Would you recommend using the Sandbox Generator as well as the Untold Encounters of the Random Kind with Forbidden Lands as a base world and rule set? Good pairing?

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  Рік тому +1

I am not familiar with Forbidden Lands enough to recommend it. I find the system a bit too complex, personally. But if you like it, I'm sure that those tools would work well with it.

Very helpful video! I ordered a few things based on your discussion. I have a lot of Mork Borg materials ready to go but I still haven't played it yet. I enjoy playing Cairn solo (using Table Fables, Perplexing Ruins oracle and campaign notebook, Fallen cards, Solo Game Master's Guide, the Gloomywood map from Knock 3, and Scarlet Heroes as supplemental materials) so much that I've not wanted to put it down. I got most of my ideas from you and Geek Gamers, so thank you!
