I've repaired two mowers with the same problem. Once you have the coil back in place, mark an area on the string wheel as well as on the housing, this will help you turn the to the proper tension. Turn the coil 6 full turn (each turn should match the marked area) then insert a small screwdrive to the tension while you insert the pull-cord. Great video as always. Thank you

Great video, I've fixed many recoils like that, it's not tricky once you get the hang of it. Keep up the good work!

The pull cord on the Power Devil was a right saga but you got there in the end and you've gained valuable experience. Your persistence paid off in the end.

Hi Martin, pull start springs can be a right pain to get right. The way I do it (if i can explain without a diagram!) is to fit the spring and rope pulley to the cowling and attach the cord and handle without any pre-winding. I then put a half turn of clockwise load on the pulley and hold it in place with my thumb. Then I pull the cord through the back of the cowling so that the starter handle is up against its stop - this leaves me with a load of loose cord, of course. The process then is to thread the cord around the pulley clockwise - feeding it into the gap between the cowl and the pulley. Once all the cord is feed onto the pulley the mechanism has effectively got a half turn of tension at the starting position so as you pull the handle you know you're not going to over load the spring. If the resistance is still a bit weak just pull the handle out about 8 inches and then hook a bit of cord from the pulley and loop it around the pulley clockwise and tuck back in to add more tension. Sorry if this sounds really hard to follow but much easier in practice.

Yes it sounds fine John I don't have a problem with them normally but these ones were something I don't normally mess with. Got it sussed now though.

You just haven't lived until you've had to fix an "unsprung" rewind spring. I guess I should be happy to say I've lived (but I'm not)! This video is a perfect illustration of the patience needed to fix small engine equipment. In my younger days the neighborhood kids would have learned a lot of new (bad) words and dodged a few missiles! Now it is just par for the course!

good video, a little trick from when I repaired mowers/power equipment regarding the recoil starter assembly installation is when fitting put the unit on the engine with all the fixing bolts in place "finger tight" then pull the engine over a couple of times (don't start the engine) to "centre" the recoil assembly relative to the flywheel then without disturbing it's position tighten the recoil assemblies fixings, this also ensures the starter "tang" presents to the flywheel in the best position.

I'm always looking for little bits like lawn mowers to fix up while I'm not at collage but this area I very rarely find something cheap or with potential for profit. Yet I'm only about 30/45 minutes up the road from where you live, like you say though I'm always looking fairly hard though! Good videos though, think I'll stick to tinkering with race cars and tractors.

you can wind that cord an extra turn with out undoing the knot. You drill a little groove on the inner spool and loop the cord around one turn. Very hard to explain here. I need to make a video of this for you.

Next time you take on one of these, place your spring, then wind your cord. Next, put a bit of preload on the spring by wrapping your cord one more time. Finally, feed the cord through the cover and install the handle.

The 'Power Devil' mower has a CE sticker on it and the way it looks is, to me, exactly like a 'Tecumseh' engined mower. 'Tecumseh' went insolvent five or six years ago and the assets were bought by a Chinese corporation. Those engines will last an extremely long time and I've worked on hundreds of them as well as 'Briggs and Stratton' ones. 'Tecumseh' always had the better carburetors as compared to 'Briggs and Stratton'. The recoil is definitely finicky. The older ones weren't so bad and were serviceable. The newer ones have too much plastic and are almost unserviceable. My experience is quite similar to yours and I've had to put a new end on the clockwork spring and rewind the blasted things many times. Another thing that I've learned is that the cord needs to be a slightly smaller diameter than on a 'Briggs and Stratton'. After about the third one you too will become expert at it. When dealing with the 'Tecumseh' powered ones I attempt to obtain the mower for zero dollars because of their unserviceability. You licked it and that's all that matters in the end. Cheers, Martin, and family. Thank you.

Not exactly. Tecumseh folded in 2007, and was basically broken up into pieces. Peerless, and the compressor division were sold off. Certified Parts Corporation (CPC) bought the remainder of the engine parts, and the rights to reproduce Tecumseh replacement parts, and Comet clutches. They are a U.S. based company. The Chinese angle is LCT (Liquid Combustion Technology) engines, which CPC assocates with. They are basically another chinese Honda clone.

Great instructional video. How to persevere through difficult recoil repair. Keep going till you get the result you need. The spring could have been flipped by the previous owner trying to fix it. You need the right 'pre-load' tension. Do you think the cord was a little too long? Good running mower and plastic deck, no rust. Selling feature.

I think the cord is now fine Bri once we sussed out what was wrong. It's a good little mower now and worth 5 times what he paid for it now with a little common sense.
      Cheers
