Don't forget to properly position your plants. A great man once said that "nothing beats the sound of a cactus."
I knew a man whom always said..."nothing beats a sit on a cactus"
A wise woman once said ‘nothing beats the sound of a great man, sitting on a cactus’!
Ahahahahahahah Ahahahahahahah
Can I just suggest: Pixies - Cactus.
Great song
Awesome video.Definitely going to look into adding some treatment to my room.
Room treatment is so underrated. Glad you're doing it and raising awareness.
The room we listen in is by far the most impact on sound good or bad. Those expensive room treatments will never wear out. Having a great sounding room is the foundation for gear to work properly. Modest gear would sound grand in a well treated room.
Amazing install and serious money but for a serious audiophile it’s worth the cost. HOWEVER my OCD kicked in when I saw the clock wedged between the panels and their closeness to it lol - it was taken down towards the end but it was back up at the end of the video. Please move it for me before I blow a circuit 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Perfect, the most under utilized "thing" in hifi . . . treating the room on some level. To me, getting the room right has always been paramount, within the price and living space limitations available. 20 years ago my dedicated listening room was treated by 8 large ASC tube traps, and various wall mounted flat panels. It wasn't on this level, and wasn't conceived on a computer to the exacting level shown in this video, but the results were amazing. My room really allowed system upgrades to shine through, even on the rudimentary level that I had treated it. That room was repurposed for years, but is now going back to a dedicated 2 channel room and will be fully treated with GIK acoustics before I setup any gear. Well done on this room, it's going to sound amazing no doubt.
Fun to watch, I just wish that you had shown a wider view of how the entire area looks. Also, some explanation of how they determined the exact placement of the particular panels. I'm hoping that some of that will be addressed in your next video.
I could easily hear the difference, and can't wait for your reaction to music being played in the room.
For those with 15 ft+ high walls, I would suggest a rock climbing wall as a diffuser.
Just spent 5k treating my room, it’s taken 2 years, best thing I have ever done.
I use racking stuffed with records and books. Plants, tapestries, and thick antique curtains. Large upside-down Japanese umbrellas help with the ceilings. Scattered Persian rugs. Gives the room that early 19th-century opium den vibe. Everything was purchased second-hand. True recycling.
For those who arent interested in having special panels on the walls and ceiling heres my suggestions.
Install the thickest carpet you can find and make sure it covers all of the floor.
Put in some bookshelfs filled with books.
Your favourite upholstered furniture (no leather). Hang some paintings etc on the walls, some flowers etc.
Work with finding a good placement for your speakers and listening location.
If you want to improve it from there. Assuming your loudspeakers are good enough (ie measure good) get at least two subwoofers. Work on placing them in the best spot.
Get a mini dsp or similar and work on the crossover (around 80hz) and some parametric eq (only up to 120 hz or so!).
After this you get new speakers if they atent quite up to snuff👌😊
Excellent to watch the installation. Could you mention the Vicoustic process for determining which panels are required and where they will go? What about a good, better, best approach - which panels to start with and which to add to the project? The upfront engineering in super important. Thanks!
I find that plants of ficus benjamina in the corners, books, lps, nice thick curtains, beautiful pictures on the wall, lamps with cloth lampshades, sofas, carpets and so on make my living room sound great...and it looks fab. Not sure how many people want their lounge to look like a recording studio...and partners!
I really like the looks of these acoustic panels. As an architecture student, specialized in building physics, this makes me so happy to see! It would be very interesting to see real life measurements, especially reverb is easy to measure. Congrats on the new home!
I treated my home office with 6 500x500 mm panels from Acoustic Worx here in SA. Very effective, and total cost was 250 Euro.
So looking forward to the follow up of your immediate and longer term experience with the new set up. Another great choice John and as always, so entertaining, informative and well produced.
these things look marvelous, like works of art, well done Sire and thank you for the quality content! happy new year!
Thank You & Looking Forward To Part 2!
Already saw it 3 times because it’s very satisfying and interesting
Where is the part2 John? Can’t wait to see the room fully loaded with plants and furniture and some expensive gears !!!!
Common
Happy Thanksgiving from California brother.
Thankful for many things this year, including always learning whenever I turn on one of your vids or read one of your articles.
The number of times i have used Shazam on Johns videos..
Yes..
me too!
Always very satisfying watching other people work. Looking forward to pt 2 and your observations on (hopefully) the sound quality improvements.
The more gear I've bought has created two mountains of boxes within boxes and my listening room has been sounding better and better lol.
Well done! Fantastic results!
I have had my room acoustically adjusted. That's the best upgrade I've done and worth all the money. 😊👍🏻
I really appreciate this video. Excellent. We need more videos looking into room treatment. Thanks. Always enjoy your topics!
I absolutely loved every second of the video. Great editing as well. Especially before and after was lovely touch.
I'm interested in 1) how one decides which panels to get and where to put them 2) what I can do in an apartment where I'm not able to drill into the walls/ceiling and 3) if there's anything I can do for less than say $1,000. Otherwise, hope your room upgrades help the sound - they certainly seem like they're going to, and they look pretty cool!
The room is the most important part of the system. I had a house with a big room (30 x 40’) for a big system (801’s and subs, 2kw power etc.) speakers set out 4’ from the walls , listening 7’ from rear wall etc. with fair bit of, low quality room treatment. Sounded pretty good by all accounts. Then moved to a much smaller condo, small living room sitting with listening short side to the speakers that have to be against the wall- listening position too. It sounded better (but shouldn’t). I thought the speakers would crush the room but “nearfield” seemed to benefit the 801’s. THEN I treated the ceiling, front and back walls almost like this room. Magical. Spend less on gear like expensive $5k DACs (sorry Darko). Put it into the room - the effect will be more noticeable.
You are correct on all counts.
Certainly a nice start.
Thanks John
Great video. Finally an innovative and practical approach to room acoustic. I did some treatments with GIK and very happy with it but your process is much better. Well done!!!!!
Nice room!!! Looking forward to seeing how it looks when it’s completely finished.
Amazing before and after difference in room sound John. Happy listening 👂🏼 👂🏼
What a project, congrats John! Step one: Consult Jesco Lohan for room acoustics. Step 2: Treat the room. Step 3: Buy loads of gear! :)
Super cool! Looking forward to hearing what the improvements are.
Awesome video! Definitely going to look into adding a few panels to my room. You can easily hear the change in the sound as the video progresses.
Whenever i go towards my turntable that's placed on a t/table shelf bolted to the side-wall half-way down my living room that is twice as long as it is wide, with speakers aiming down the long length, i hear a near perfect bass ballance that dissapears when my head gets a foot or so & more away, the deep bass is all but gone when i'm sitting on my listening sofa. I have soft furnishing all around the room, a thick'ish carpet with an underlay & i've tried altering speaker phase, toe-in/out & everything i can think of to ameliorate this fact but it grieves me that it still only sounds excellent throughout the whole frequency spectrum with my head about a foot or less away from the side wall above my equipment. I've tried everything short of placing the speakers 4 or more feet out from the wall ...the misses won't take that. Every week i get asked "have you pulled those speakers out from the wall again" no, i say lying thru my teeth that i moved them out by 2 more inches & still she notices it !!
I dare not try to pull them out more because if i like it better, i'll want them there permanently for music & film & tv sound. Are we not men? I had balls once
Fantastic video guys. I've learned so much from watching this channel. The content is always first-rate and interesting.
It looks great. I wasn't expecting it to look so good. But it does.
Excellent. It wasn’t a matter of if, but when. Thank you for taking this on so we can collectively take a huge leap forward in our understanding of sound and our relationship to our listening space.
Tricky job , sound measurements needed ( by whom ? ) and proper installation .
Too good to be true for an average hobbyist in an average European country......
Very informative, John and wow! What a difference! Thank you.
My favourite video of your to date, thanks!
Congratulations, I wish you much joy with the new acoustics!
Really interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Glad to see your doing treatments. Wow really nice!
Watching this in the kitchen on my iPad. Wife walks in. Without missing a beat she says “Darko? What’s he talking about today?” LOL. Informational video, I enjoyed watching the process. 🎵
Ok Mr. Darko! Your treatments are looking REALLY good and I can’t wait to hear you try out a familiar rig set up in the new space. Wall treatments and bass traps are one thing but ensuring the ceiling was also addressed makes this a legit modeling space.
Great Video!! What a striking difference!
Very interesting John. In a previous house I had a dedicated listening room which I had acoustically analyzed and then made and installed the recommended ceiling, wall/ceiling interface and bass trap components. The improvement was startling! In my current house I share the large main living space with my wife so acoustic room treatment, apart from an area rug, is out of the question. I have a 'near field' listening position which minimizes those primary reflections but I'm sure it would sound so much better with some absorption/diffraction/bass trap panels.
Cheers,
Dave.
Very nice and interesting to see this kind of video John. I will place alsoo a panel against my backwall in the future. Keep up the good work!👍🏽
I told myself a few years ago that future hi-fi spending would come after room treatment, it makes such a difference. I look forward to seeing the second part of the video.
this is great, thanks for making this video!
Great video. So excited to watch. I spend just 1000€ for gik acustic stuff and my set up sound far better. Now I can say I hear what the loudspeaker can almost deliver. I think most of the people with good sound system forget this thing about treatment
So jealous! Can't wait to hear what you think of the room when everything is back in place
Amazing room, amazing products, congratulations !!!
These look fantastic, I have a large kitchen wall at the end of my snug that bounces all sorts of horrible noises back at me and have been looking for something that might pass the wife test. Thanks for the video.
Super interesting content this - many thanks John!
This was a very informative video. I was overwhelmed knowing that we produce such good things here in Portugal to help your acoustics! 😀
Wow, that is a lot of product, lots of work and a terrific install. Looks great! Looking forward to your thoughts on how your listening experience changes.
Love it! Thanks
Looks cool and I do hear the difference!
Wow! Incredible!
Great project John!
It looks great, and for the high frequencies you are probably done… but for the lower and those room modes… I am guessing still an issue.
In Switzerland, all the holes in the walls would cost me more than the whole setup itself - eventually :D
Yep strict AF
Why? Is there a reason for that?
@@apg91 Landlords in CH are strict AF... :) You practically need to restore the apartment - in this case, a whole painting would be required. It easily can cost you ~10k CHF...
Olaf did a wonderful job!
Yes, he did!
you are an inspiration !!! enjoy!!!
Good to hear about the sustainable materials part!
really useful to see this type of install
Looks so good as well 👌🏼
Fun experience. Looking forward to the follow up.
That IS COOL!!! I don't think I'd ever do that, BUT I now see what is possible, and how in-depth one can get in their Room Treatment process. Thanks!
I enjoyed watching this video. Really nice.
This is fantastic. If I ever get the cash for a serious high end hi fi, room treatment like this will be a must!
Love this video and have been a fan of Vicoustic for many years. IT would great to get a follow up video on your perception of how 2 ch audio quality has improved. I've found that the background, separation, transparency in my setup had improved such that I could listen to my fav tracks at lower volume!
That looks killer! I cant wait to hear your impressions once you get gear back in there
Very nice video, can't wait for part two ... very curious what the (audible) outcome of all this has meant for you !
Wow another very well made video!
Awesome video John !!! Nice change of content. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦🍻🍻🍻🍻🤘🤘
Your best video so far!
thanks... thank you so much...
I've enjoyed this very much. well documented 💫
Great project. Good way to upgrade the sound of your system.
Always wanted to see your room acoustically treated! you have really nice gear to use in non treated room. I hope you enjoy it!
My wife says NO! It looks very "Thunderbirds". Very interesting though. It's going to be interesting to follow your response in the future. Thanks for taking one for the team John.
Beautiful
Nice! I built some porous absorbers for side and rear wall in our lounge, very worthwhile! I am quite curious about doing the ceiling too. Did that in my home studio with great results!
I am using Eighth Nerve Response system (12 pieces) in White to match the walls from the now defunct company. I love your acoustic system ! Great job !
Your b-roll always has the most enjoyable electronic bangers my guy
Superb 👍
Ooooooh, I bet you're going to love your new room :)
I would LOVE a room like that some day. Looking forward to awesome sound in your content.
I have two listening rooms. The small upstairs one is 140sq ft and has three separate very small windows
high on the right hand speaker wall with bookshelf below. there is one large window that is covered by
a top down bottom up fabric shade on the back wall. The floor is carpeted. The back wall is a fabric sofa
with wall art and the front wall has two large wall art pieces. The ceiling has two large hanging Japanese
paper Mobiles that are pyramidal shape that comes to a point at the ceiling and are four ft by four ft.
They hang down about two and a half feet from a nine foot ceiling. There is no reverberance and the
art and carpeting make the room aesthetically pleasing along with dampening. The sub woofer is a
REL T/7X along with a choice of Magnapan LRS, Buchardt s400 or older B&W 805 s. The Rel is quick
enough for the LRS and they are powered by a Hegel h190. So far, so good and didn't have to pay for
room treatment. Obviously not as technically effective as Darko's but gets the job done.
I have to say this is a much better idea than the room treatment panels. Why not fill your room with beautiful things which also have sound controlling properties rather than this artistically vapid furniture substitute.
How the LRS's sound compared to your other speakers?
You should put your wall clock in another room, or maybe get a more quiet one?
Exceptional lengths that you've gone to there..... When furnished and up and running the rewards would surely justify the expense (for those of us that would need to pay)
At some stage in the coming years I will be moving... This type of project lies ahead for me.... Thank you for making this content John. 👍🏻
Looking forwards to the next step...
Olaf is on another level. Really enjoyed this one.
I can’t wait for the next video to see your face when you play some sounds. Brilliant 🤩
As it can be seen from the video, there is no limit to the devellopment of subtle audio infrastructure. Bravo guys!
Subtle?!? Heheh. That isn’t exactly subtle in: effect, looks, size, or price. But it is truly great if you can manage it!
It’s not gonna be for everyone, but personally I think it looks very cool. I’m very interested in treating my room in the same way and i’m looking into it at the moment so thanks for the video John it was very helpful.
