    It's common to see lots of kids playing fast but this little girl has an excellent articulation, she plays extremely clean and perfectly rhythmically, each note sounds with the correct volume. This is really musically and technical, not just crazy speed without thinking. I'm absolutely amazed

    Have any of these rock child prodigies gone on to tear up the field as adults? They're amazing but seem to evaporate later on. Cue a dozen rebuttals....

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  8 років тому +23

      I think what's often overlooked is just how good at young ages the mainstream heroes were. Steve Morse had evolved his adult picking technique by 16. Yngwie was blazing in his teens and both he and EVH had recorded classic albums by 21 or so. And probably many other examples.

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  8 років тому +5

      +otosbutt No doubt. Picking technique happened a little later for Mike as he tells is, also in the 15-16 range like Steve. But the one characteristic all these players have in common is that they did not spend years and years developing basic technique. At least with picking technique, most of them solved the hardest problems within a year or two from whatever point they really started paying attention to mechanical concerns.

    • @WestcountryDude
      @WestcountryDude 8 років тому +27

      ***** I think it's easy to become too focused on technique as guitar players and sometimes to overlook the artistry that the big players bring to the table. Nobody would have cared about Malmsteen's or Vai's technique if it were not for their innovative sounds and styles. To me, these very young rock virtuoso kids disappear later on for same reason that classical players become become successful: their technical ability and capacity for imitation. That alone is never going to make anyone stand out in rock music though and, I feel, ultimately defeats the object of it. A tour guide once said to me: "Every Vegas hotel has a gimmick", something unique to attract you to it, and I think the same is true of rock guitarists and that these kids' only gimmick is their age. I hope I don't come across as jealous - just because the little bastards are all better than me! hehe

    • @severalpaperclips
      @severalpaperclips 8 років тому +4

      +WestcountryDude I think when you look at the chops of some of the "unsung" random guitar heroes on youtube, some of them were probably unusually proficient at a young age, we just didn't hear about them. I think your answer to your own question sums it up well: what separates the legends from the footnotes is great songs. Ask random rock music fans who their favorite guitarists are, and the overwhelming majority of the names will be people who are known for catchy songs. Especially now that technical instruction has become so widely available, Yngwie-esque playing has become a commodity. It may still take dedication to learn, but it's not highly valued by the listening public at large.
      As Troy has hinted at or possibly even stated outright in some of his material, perhaps the greatest legacy of Cracking The Code will be that it will get more of us up to "shredding" proficiency relatively quickly so that we can re-direct our "learn to shred" reinvention-of-the-wheel efforts into new and more interesting musical avenues. That is, to paraphrase the martial arts cliche that annoyed Bart Simpson: "we must learn shredding so that we never have to use it." OK, maybe not "never", but as Marty Friedman said in one of the video lessons he did for Guitar World (paraphrasing): "Once you learn to play fast, you realize that nobody cool is going to want you to play fast." That doesn't mean learning to play fast can't be personally rewarding, it just means we should be prepared that unless we bring something more to the table, there won't be many people who want to listen to us. ;-) Way more people people appreciate Eddie Van Halen or John Lennon than Vai or Malmsteen or Batio.
      And I don't say that to disrespect Vai or Malmsteen or Batio: I mention them only to observe that some things grab the ears of the public at large, and some things don't. That's not necessarily a reflection of how talented or hardworking an artist is, it's just a matter of how their creative output aligns with the tastes of listeners (and music industry kingmakers).

      +WestcountryDude it doesn't matter if they "make it" as adult, famous rockstars. it might be fun to compare young prodigies to adult master musicians, but it's really not the point of it. if you take it from the teacher's perspective, marty friedman's perspective, it's appreciating students' talents and giving them something positive to grow with. look at how happy and impressed he is while teaching her. for students, it doesn't matter if they're super impressive or not. this young girl's mental development is being given the stimulation she can clearly use as a very smart and talented person later on. her ability to learn surely isn't just in guitar, and she can use it elsewhere in life.

    • @troygrady

      I asked him to do that, and he was game, which reflects rather positively. In fact he was a charmer the entire interview and made Lisa really feel at ease. • @Thijs-Kuiken
      @Thijs-Kuiken 8 років тому +4

      thanks for the feedback. Marty is very sympathetic for being there and listening and jamming.. no doubt. Great job of you for getting them together!
      This reminds me a bit of a clinic he did in Den Haag (Netherlands) to promote an album (Music for speeding) and a new guitar..
      He explained and showed some things he likes doing.. how he bends the notes etc.. cool stuff!
      But there was also a part where he was discussing really basic stuff.. like... really basic stuff. He looked around for acknowledgement.. as if he was waiting for someone to say.. huh?? How do you mean?? How do you do that?? What are you explaining?? But everyone knew cause it was that simple.
      Point is that in light of what he has done, is known for etc.. he could have given her something to really chew on right? That is something I was hoping to see here.. No disrespect of course, the guy is awesome! And so is Lisa :-)

    • @severalpaperclips
      @severalpaperclips 8 років тому +10

      Consider also that social etiquette in Japan puts a particular premium on avoiding creating embarrassment for others. And even in the west, someone might be perceived as a bit of a jerk for putting a child musician "on the spot". If Marty had more challenging suggestions for Lisa, it seems like it would be more adroit to bring them up with her father (also a guitar player and her teacher) without the cameras rolling. And given that the mandate here was to understand what Lisa does well, and how she does it, I thought Marty handled things perfectly.

    • @rustyshackleford4743
      @rustyshackleford4743 8 років тому +4

      +tango setentaycinco That's not true. Although many guitarists would agree with you, it's only the elitists who say stuff like skill can't be measured. Of course we cannot measure it accurately, but we know if someone plays faster, cleaner, with better timing, better feel, better vibrato, etc.. Tina is not at the elite level yet in all of those areas.

    • @Tangosetentaycinco
      @Tangosetentaycinco 8 років тому +1

      Rusty Shackleford what I was trying to say was that both already master all the things that makes a great guitarrist, scales, phrasing, theory,etc I don't think there's anything Lisa does that Tina can't do, being better is relative and depends on personal taste, Lisa X at her young age and with those little hands already excels at all techniques like alternate picking, sweep arpegioes, etc, Tina is a little older and has a few more years ahead of experience and practice, I think we would only be able to really compare them when they start composing their own music...they're both exceptional

    • @ESPSJ
      @ESPSJ 8 років тому +1

      +tango setentaycinco I love that statement, it's like when people compared Yngwie to say Paul Gilbert, no one on the face of the planet could say one is better than the other, they're just "different".

    After much time of studying and trial and error, I have begun to truly see how these instances of prodigies etc come about. I have been teaching guitar full time for the past 6 years, and have been host to huge amount of students, lots of kids but plenty of adults as well. These prodigies or more "naturally gifted" players not only come as kids but as adults as well. let me give some examples.
    I have student named Brad, he is mid 30s, normal guy, runs his own gym etc. Anyways, with in 4 lessons with him, he was already able to play a decent amount of songs, with very solid rhythm and has continued to improve since then very well, then there's, Colt, he is 13, and I have been teaching him for a year now, out of all the students I have taught, he is the only one that I have come across that from the very start his alternate picking technique was already there, it just needed development (we are currently working on "Aviator/polyphia". It has become a common place with Colt for use to speed up youtube videos to be more challenging, as far as 2x normal speed.
    What does Brad and Colt have in common? They both understand very well how their brains learn, and process information. Everything from the articulations and mechanics to being able to maintain a very calm and "relaxed" state while they are playing. They are very attentive listeners and tend to obsess over the smallest things while they are playing a part, things that normal players would scuff off as just a "sliding squeak" they focus on how to eliminate any and everything that they don't believe should be heard.
    When marty was showing Lisa that arpeggio idea, she watched him briefly, and then processed what she "heard" and refined it til it sounded as close as possible to what he did. If you watch carefully, you'll see him biding for her attention, trying to get her to watch what he was exactly doing as she was working out what she thought it was but, she had already seen enough of it to get the visual mapping, and was refining what she heard when he played the idea, so her watching him over and over wasn't very vital, it had moved on to refining the sonic clip that had been made in a loop of sorts in her head. I think this also helps her maintain her technique and relaxed feel, because she reproducing the lick he played but in the mindset she would have if she was was writing ideas or licks etc, so it came faster to her and she was able to efficiently pull it off.
    In summation, if you are able to find specific ways your brain can process and learn information at the fastest way possible, be able to target specific patterns and how each musical idea connects to the next as well as be completely aware of your body and your state of being as relaxed as possible, and focus more on what you "heard" and not getting wrapped up in what you "saw", then you'll have a great chance of experiencing similar results.
