Part of her breath control comes from the fact that she has been a very competitive long distance runner from the age of 8. She is till a runner and was on track to be part of South Africa's Olympic Team until Covid shut down the country.

Amira truly is a special young lady who has done so much since age 10 for underprivileged children. She began a foundation at age 10! It is called the Gelukskinders Foundation (which, I believe, means "Happy Children" in Dutch). Through her humanitarian efforts with the foundation, she has been able to build 18 playgrounds for many of the underprivileged children and under-funded schools of South Africa, where she, her Mom, and her brother Fincent reside. She was born in Holland, won Holland's Got Talent at age 9, has performed with the great Andre Rieu and others, and recently turned 18 in March. Her name "Amira" is the Persian word for "Princess" -- and inside out, she truly is! She has the sweetest, most beautiful voice, and I love to hear her simply speak as well as sing!

The company that made her dresses for quite a while is named "Bedazzled", as in "Be Dazzled". Her dresses have always been very impressive. Since she turned 18 this spring, she may be using a different dressmake, at least the look of her wardrobe has changed.
Since you didn't mention it, I'll say that the person playing the piano was Gerrit Willighagen, her father. He has played for her before, especially when she was younger (and so was he.) In any event, they both gave a quite impressive performance.

It is interesting that you are following Amira for some time, but did not mention the fact that she traveled to see her father in the Netherlands and to perform with him. Her musical family fell apart at young age, but she maintained a positive attitude and keep both parents in her musical life.

Thanks Valerie for another great reaction to the exquisite voice of Amira. When you get around to reacting to the Medley of Sound of Music, it’s interesting that Amira sings about one octave above the original by Julie Andrews. If you have time, it would be interesting for you to listen to Julie Andrews version first, followed by Amira’s rendition as I tend to agree with your thoughts about the similarities between them, especially in the performance you’ve just reacted to.
    Cheers again Graeme

Thank you so much for explaining the difficulty of that last note. I was always not sure why the final sound seemed difficult. Now that you point it out, it is obvious that the 'u' in true (the last word) is incredibly hard to sing in a high octave, and has to be modified. Thank you for the education. That's why people return to your reactions.

Thank you again for this reaction on Amira. Till recently she was thinking about her future: singing or going another direction. And now she has decided that music is where her heart is. This year she will finish Highschool (it is so easy to forget she is only 18...) and after that she is planning to make a worldtour (Europe, America and Australia).... Not to to forget the activities she has with here charity foundation "Gelukskinders" (Happy Children). So things are really going on track for Amira now.

Great reaction, Valerie! Amira turned 18 last Sunday, the 27th. She gave a solo concert on March 20. In this concert she sang Catalani's "Ebben? Ne andrò lontana". She also adapted "I Will Always Love You" into classical style, with lyrics in Italian. Very impressive performances. She'll take an year break before deciding on her college education. During this break she'll probably do a world tour. Please react to "Amira Willighagen - La Vergine degli Angeli": ua-cam.com/video/NievOBH8Ab4/v-deo.html. Thanks. Keep up the wonderful work.

This performance is a great example of a song and performer coming together for a stellar interpretation. I love the way opera trained singers can do such a great job on more popular (not pop) material. They really bring out the drama in an otherwise simple song and they also have the vocal discipline and training to navigate all the tricky twists and turns of what might seem like a "simple" song to non-vocalists. And she dials back the full opera belt which is done in service to the song and what is best for the song.

Amira always do it her own way, it's signature feature for most great artists. The audience often are impressed with fast singing, coloratura style, but if you are a singer you know slow consistent singing is more impressive. Amira latest concert was mostly musical style repertoire. The few opera she sings she always modifies, as she always done, to suit her own voice and preferences, instead of doing the easier non creative way, as others always done. But what boggles is why she still, in public interviews, insists talking about a feature goal in La Scala - Sydney Opera House, perhaps only PR, who am I to tell.

It would not surprise me if Amira achieved this goal and sang at those opera houses. After all when at the age of seven, she wanted to have playgrounds built for underprivileged children in South African townships. At the age of ten she signed the contract under her mother's supervision and set the process in motion. At present there are eighteen playgrounds completed and a nineteenth underway.I believe that when Amira sets her mind to anything, she goes for it and gets it done. That is AMIRA.Reguards from Michael Jonathan Lewis,Allan's-Nek, Roodepoort, J H B, South Africa.

There's the breathy low note -- the first one, all breath, no support, and the slower the legato the bigger the spread. Listen to Mary Martin sing this!

I think that the arrangement, pacing etc has to do with father's piano skills. He plays piano way better than I do but is limited--not to fast, not legato, block chords.... She wanted to play with dad and worked within his limits. I respect her for her respect for the song and her family!

I have listened to quite a few of Amira’s videos and compared to her earlier performances, I feel she is beginning to show signs of vocal fatigue. To me, this is concerning in such a young singer. Earlier on, up through 2017/2018, I would classify her as a light lyric soprano, since she demonstrated a lot of brilliance and ease in her top range. Since then, I notice on most later performances, that she seems to have lost that brilliance and ease with her top notes. Her vibrato is often wobbly, and top notes lack resonance and seem labored and forced. I do agree with you that this particular arrangement is brutally slow and difficult to sing, but I would say it isn’t exactly an appropriate arrangement for a lighter voice due to the sustained phrasing. I am wondering about what your thoughts would be on my comments. Amira is so very talented and it seems to me she hasn’t had the guidance she needs to protect her glorious instrument. She has a heart of gold and is truly an inspiration, especially in her commitment to help others. Also, my remarks stem from my background as a voice major in college where I trained classically as a coloratura soprano.

It is nothing wrong with Amira voice. If you listen more carefully she had a shrillness on her top notes from the beginning. In her early years the shrillness was covered and even adding to her then bright tessitura. When getting older her voice naturally changed more than the average singer. Now when her tessitura is much darker the same shrillness she always had stands out and does not add but rather sound like it is breaking her voice. And she never been singing with an educated classical vocal technique. Now she for sure are heading where her natural voice is leading her, towards a more musical type of repertoire. When she occasionally sings an Aria she always adapt the arrangement and tone to her present voice. She does not use her operatic voice she also has because as a general rule the operatic voice is not pleasant for the ear and anyway has almost no future.
This her latest recording where she sings with a more open mouth, she just is brilliant and can sing with many different approaches to music so she always makes music her own and not as the typical educated run of the mill singer.
