I gotta let you know. I’ve been wanting to sing. I play guitar with my significant other who is a talented singer and this video came to me at the perfect time. It’s inspired me to keep pushing and practicing so I can sing too. ❤

all jokes aside, this video demonstrates why I 'love' (love as far as watching a guitarists UA-cam channel) Michaels channel. He is so honest, and its probably this side of Michaels videos I 'love' the most such as his philosophical views on things and him not been afraid to tell us what he thinks. And here with him jumping into this video with the very real possibility of embarrassing himself; in that we all feel a little embarrassed doing such un-usual things, but Michael has jumped in and is participating no questions barred. love ya Michael. thank You.

I heard James Hetfield on Howard recently and he spoke about how he’s recruited himself a vocal coach and how it’s helped him immensely over these past few years. Great stuff Michael!

Michael and Missy! This comes to me at a very vital time..I am taking a Master Class in melody at a songwriting site, and my attempts to sing my melody, this week’s assignment- to be posted online, have been pitiful. It has been years since I have done an open mic, and my throat wasn’t cooperating. Then you posted this the next day😊 Thank you! I’m blowing a “Bubbly” scale whenever, and I know it will take some time, and finishing the entire video of tips🎼🎶

Quick comment; I just happened on to this video. I take vocal lessons from Missy. I would highly recommend her coaching. There are many more exercises than blowing bubbles. Some even sound funnier. Missy works from a structured methodology but is willing and able to adjust to your individual requirements. In my case ear training is very important for me to work on but we don't just repeat exercise after exercise. The lesson is broken up into exercises to build your foundation, along with working on particular songs that I want to be able to perform.

most people making silly comments are the ones way too scared even try to work on their singing voice...Michael, I too am working on singing (as a drummer and bass player) and for most of us it is intimidating and leaves us feeling very vulnerable. It is obvious you actually want to learn to sing, as weird as that may sound. cheers brother!

These warmups and singing tips are good stuff. Thanks! Re: the other, I learned to sing and play at the same time by doing this - I put on a subtitled streaming show and focused on evenly dividing my attention between actually following the show’s subtitles and maintaining my fingerstyle pattern. It was hard as hell at first, but you get immediate feedback by either losing the show’s plot or hearing your strum get off track. After a while, it just starts working. Probably palm mute for the sanity of your roomies or SO. Like everything involving a guitar, it takes time, but it’s doable. Good luck all!

Just gives me so much more respect for guys who sing with amazing range and feeling, and at the same time, can play intricate and melodic passages on guitar - such as Myles Kennedy does with AlterBridge and with his solo stuff (and previous bands)!!💪💪

I learned both and I can tell, that the one thing that I found to be the most important for singing as a guitarist who started vocal coaching was body posture. This can obviously be very subjective, could be something else for everyone. Another thing was to not play and sing songs in the original key, but adjust the songs to your natural vocal range. That's actually an important one. Just try to sing songs in different keys.

This is awesome. I’ve been learning guitar and taking singing lessons simultaneously for a little over a year and they complement each other so well! I notice i really struggle to stay in time singing and it has really made me focus on listening to the chord changes and being in sync with the tempo. And this without a doubt translates to playing guitar

That is awesome! After covid, I decided to do exactly what you are doing. My vocal coach is an awesome person. First we deal with the shame that I feel, because someone in my past, most likely, made fun of my singing or something similar. I have been at it for almost 1.5 yrs and have made strong progress. I am writing songs, from me! Now , that is another fear that I have to get over... Is it good enough... Trying to make my mind change that thought to , am I satisfied.

I’m 37 and started taking lessons at 28, then moved to Texas where Karaoke is like American Idol. That was a huge jump for me. Started practicing daily & recording.
Now I sing on my own tracks which is something my college bandmates still can’t comprehend lol.

Regarding Sir Paul, I imagine that growing up with a jazz musician dad and singing all those years as a young man in a band trained his ear and voice pretty well. It's not like he didn't have any training.

I want to sing so bad, I feel like I could. Kinda like the potential shows itself with flashes. My biggest problem is staying in “octave?” or key. In my head I know that the song can be sung in the 1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1 of a key but I struggle to not throw random numbers from other keys in the mix. ESPECIALLY when I try to sing along to a song. I feel like I probably have a pretty large range as I can hit really low notes (maybe not with great amounts of power) and I can sing fairly high (not Steve Perry high but more like typical country singer high). It just kills me not to be able to sing. My kids all loved for me to sing and play guitar for them when they were little, but not so much now that they have a slightly more discerning ear for music lol…..

I had it click for me when a teacher told me to not worry about my left hand. Just keep the right hand going no matter what…probably start with a 3 chord song…and if you need to you can even mute the strings with the left hand…but you need that rhythm to keep on going no matter what.

One of the biggest impediments to singing and playing at the same time I have noticed is the inability to strum in time. When you strum, keep your arm moving, even when not hitting the strings.
Let’s say I am playing Bad Moon Rising, and the rhythm is something like 1 (&) 2 (& 3) & 4 & with the numbers taking a down strum and the &s an up strum and the strums in parentheses skipped. A lot of people will hang out below the strings for the 3 &, leading to a stopping and starting that makes rhythm so much harder than it needs to be. Keep that strumming arm moving like a metronome so you can focus your attention on singing.

If you've put in the same number of hours singing as you have playing guitar, how good would you be right now? Just put the time in and you'll get better.
