@@scarredguitarist7359 good for you
Kirk may be the "lead guitarist" but James puts his heart and soul into every one of his solos.
For sure
Kirks also shit so there's that
@@erosbifebeef5115 relax kiddo 👶
Kirk does also or he wouldn't have his position... Metallica doesn't hire bots
@@truthhurts79 if kirk puts his heart and soul into every solo then his heart and soul are messed up lol
wonder how metallica would be with kirk as the rythm guitarist and james as the lead guitarrist since all kirk's riffs are killer and so are james's solos
Absolutly agree
Listen again to Whiskey in the Jar. The whole rhythm is Kirk, and James did all the solos and harmonies.
so are james riffs and kirk leads
"all kirk's riffs are killer"
You do know that only like 1% of the riffs he's ever written have been good enough to put on a song, right?
Tell Kirk to not lose his phone and we might have some of that in the next album
that harmony solo in fight fire with fire is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever. mozart type stuff
Reminded me of rondo alla turca or sweet sugar plum faery
@@kjl3080 can tell cliff helped out on that section
@@ali965 literally all cliff did in that section was tell james how to harmonise, all that section is james doing
james wrote it on acid, cliff helped him with it, and it 100% has classical bits in it
@@briang8579 So what Ali said is true. He did help out.....why are you arguing?
A shame you forgot all his St Anger solo's ...
Yeah that one solo from all within my hands. KILL KILL KILL
Technically there's actually one. Some Kind of Monster. Except for the fact that it ain't a solo at all. It is just a lead part
The live is to die solo is one of the best of all time. You can feel a lot of pain and sadness in it
Kirk's solos have bluesy feel and are like free flying bird. James Solos are sort of emotional and tight.
His favorite song is free bird so...
Damn James is truly Metallica’s unique sound, everyone else just follows him.
It's funny how many people here completely disregard the fact that Kirk has done close to a 100 solos for Metallica and it's bound to happen that ideas run out on the assembly line. The thing is, if you're not forced to do something as often, you do in fact have more space and time to pour yourself into the final product. James' solos' level would also flop massively if he'd ever been put into a position where they were a mandatory element. Spare yourselves on Kirk and appreciate the video for what it is.
This
is true
The thing is when your first 2 albums are already filled with your whole pallet and then you just rinse and repeat
Finally someone who actually uses his brain before writing a comment.
What about other beloved lead guitarists that have played just as many or even more?
The Outlaw Torn outro solo is by far my favorite James’ solo. Brings a great end to an amazing underrated song.
That's one of the most epic Metallica songs ever. I think it doesn't get enough attention because of the Load/Reload hate. It's a shame because those albums are killer if you can just try not to think of Metallica as only the "first few albums Metallica."
I think that solo is special to the entire band, I remember watching a performance in Mannheim and as James was playing the solo, the other 3 were watching him closely, as if to soak in every note.
I agree, the Outlaw Torn is a dark masterpiece. I suspect it didn't get as much attention commercially because radio has a hard time playing 10+ minute (unencumbered) songs. It really tells its own dark story the way the song is structured though.
@@Fister_of_Muppets Radio is dead. It's the same 30 songs they've been playing since the 70s and more ads than music.
james' suicide and redemption solo is on the actual album, just in a slightly different version
The second one isn’t
@@kjl3080 it is on the album, they only cut a small part in the middle, the first 30 seconds and the last 5 are on the album
I’ve only listened to death magnetic via guitar hero due to brickwalling issues so I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks
James combines violent and heavy riffs with beautiful smooth solos
Its sad how few their are because imo James has the best solos
I have 10 minutes of footage tho
@@kjl3080 lemme guess. Master Of Puppets, The Outlaw Torn, Suicide And Redemption, and I think a song off of HTSD has a James solo
A bunch more
@@kjl3080 wait really? Of right Nothing Else Matters doesn't have Kirk at all, almost forgot about that
He commented that before the premiere
Hetfield's solos (the early ones, at least) are just as much the brainchild of Cliff as they are James. He learned a lot of his melodic playing from Cliff. It's one of his greatest contributions to the band.
EDIT: You can hear the bass in "To Live is to Die" because it's the last song Cliff has writing credit for. It's also the FIRST and LAST instrumental Jason ever played on an album.
As much as I love Kirk's solos, all of James' leads just have that certain addition of emotion that would make players like Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and David Gilmour proud
James is the better player imho. His tone, phrasing and execution are great. He seems to have a better ear for melody and never over plays. It's never just a flurry of pentatonic notes.
you are partially right, except the part of pentatonic, yeah james use only pentatonic phrases, kirk most of the time also, its cause , its the best scale for metal, using mode, is not really suit for any metal song, you have to build up the song for this, you cannot use phrygrian mode on every song, someitme it work , and sometime its just show off, but not work(phygrian put an egyptian/midle east sound to every solo, it kind of work on like iron maiden powerslave album but the ontext is there) and its thesame for all the otehr scale mod. Most of the metal guitarist, use 90% of the time pentatonic
@@steevelapointe1152 I respectfully have to disagree. There are several solos in there that make full use of diatonic scales, which sound like they use the natural minor, and the harmonised sections certainly do as the pentatonic doesn't lend itself to harmony given it's structure. James' solo from Master of Puppets uses the E natural minor, not the pentatonic minor, as it contains the notes F# and C which are the 2nd and 6th degree of the Aeolian mode/natural minor. I'd need to go through the examples but there's more going on than just pentatonic scales. James also has a great grasp of chord tones and he often outlines triads in his solos.
Man the tone si the same for both lead parts
James is an exceptional rhythm guitar player but he's not Kirk or Dave when it comes to high speed shredding in the 80s. Those songs on the first 4 albums would've been shit if it was just melodic and slow solos like James part in MoP. 80s thrash solos = speed and Kirk was on form. Can't even imagine James soloing on Battery or Whiplash. Interesting thought though
@@dales616 oh absolutely. James isn't a shredder by any means. He plays to his strengths but shredding isn't one of them, and everyone loves a bit of face melting lead guitar.
7:05 One of the best Hetfield's guitar licks.
First song I heard from tallica was Master Of Puppets and I fell In love by Kirk's Riff and James Solo
Wait, it's usually the opposite order, wtf
O r o n
Conclusion: James needs to solo more. As much as we all love Kirks wah, James still needs more
In turn, kirk requires some more riffage
@@christianstojgtr honestly, kirks riffs are killer. Creeping death alone proves he could do it
@@brandybo1234 too bad he lost his phone

The Just A Bullet Harmony and Rebel of Babylon harmonies are one of the best harmonies they've ever written. Such a shame it's so unknown
0:24 what a fucking perfect, smooth transition! Kudos!
There was also a James solo that was planned to be on Wasting my Hate, which in my opinion it's a great solo, shame they didn't put it on the studio version
Honestly both solos from To Live is to Die are the best solos Metallica have ever written
suicide and redemption
Holy shit.. I was so confused when you were talking about James’s last solo in suicide and redemption. I was like what do u mean its part of the song.
And then Kirk didn’t come in… I was like SHIT WHAT! Anyways I can’t believe I went this long without knowing there was more to it. It was already by far my favorite solo from James and one of my favorite solos in their discography.
Thank you 😂
The outlaw torn solo is amazing.
Its so simple, but, so catchy.
There are actually more Hetfield solos like Some Kind of Monster lead part which is supposed to be Kirk’s but James plays it live in the studio, Now That We’re Dead interlude that is similar to the Outlaw Torn, ManUNKind which is in the intro, and also Ecstacy of Gold cover which actually doesn’t count in Metallica’s albums but great solo nonetheless.
The some kind of monster thing isn’t a solo if it’s repeated multiple times in the song
Now that we’re dead could be considered a solo
Yeah it is more of a lead part than a solo. I think the "solo" there is just one bend. That's it.
Yeah it actually has melody and it also jumps into high notes
James's solo in Ecstacy of Gold is also awesome.
New wave of heavy British metal 😳 8:44
Honestly i love spitout the bone mostly because of Hetfields crazy powerful vocals, on top of having the best solo since AJFA (fight me) plus that main riff is just crazy
Also underneath the lead part provided here have you noticed how tight those sixteenth notes are.
holy shit I had NEVER heard the extended Suicide & redemption solo, and I was raiiiised on death magnetic
I love how there is a genuine music enthusiast behind all the shitposts. I really gotta expand my Metallica. I only know stuff from Kill Em All to Black Album, and Hardwired. Everything else aside from a song or two is just not there.
Metallica has the best harmonies, CHANGE MY MIND
A7X has the best harmonies
@@kjl3080 Yea I forgot about them I'd say they're tied
I’d still say Metallica have better harmonies because they’re far and few between. It’s kind of A7X shtick to have harmonies. I love both bands but something about Metallica’s harmonies sound so good and not cliche. However Gojira and Mastadon also have some FANTASTIC harmonies
Iron Maiden
@@A1phaMK more great harmonies, I just don’t listen to them unfortunately
You literally cut off one of James’s best solos. I love that solo from ‘The Outlaw Torn’. And fun fact: They had to cut James Hetfield’s solo short in ‘The Outlaw Torn’ because a CD could only hold about 79 minutes of songs at the time. The song is actually over a minute longer.
Oops sorry
Amazing coverage of James and his playing, thank you for this
The intro and guitar solos of Fight Fire with Fire can really pull many people into liking this genre.
What about The Outlaw Torn outro? That's more of a solo than the volume swell thing you included in here
YeH, I was waiting for it
My bad
The Unencumbered version is really cool, check it out if you can.

1:54 in the breakdown of blackens and in some parts of dyers eve you can hear the bass clanking away
I always known that James is the soul of this band, no matter who plays with him
On S&R, James's solo is million times better than Kirk's one. Specially if it's in the Guitar Hero version. Kirk's one is pure Wah and it doesn't respect the tonic of the song. I pitched Kirk's solo on Reaper and it's how it had to sound in my opinion. I'll leave it to everyone's criteria, I just gave my personal opinion.
where is it?
Oron.
Nice video bro🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿
How did you know the Orion solo before Cliff's solo was Kirk's? Always heard it was James'
Logical deduction + guitar world interview
The first one is definitely Kirk.
The bass solo is said to be the fourth.
James is the second.
Therefore the third is Kirk
@@kjl3080 well damn, I've been playing Kirks part instead of James'for the past 5 years in my tribute band lmao
Rip, but don’t worry, that’s actually controversial and it really does sound like James. But it’s because cliff helped Kirk write that part. And you can hear it’s very cliff like anyway
It's crazy to think Orion has 5 solos. Alex Hefner said it best, that song is a spiritual experience
Now that the Black Album box set has been released you can hear how the harmony in ‘My Friend Of Misery’ was added very late in the process, the rough mix from June 2nd, 1991 has something quite different instead. Cool video mate! 🤘🏽
people throw crap at just a bullet away alot but the whole beyond magnetic ep is amazing. with jaba being my favorite, possibly one of my favorite metallica tracks in general
They should have put them all on dm and just made it a double album like hardwired was. Not really throwaway material imo lol.
It baffles me when people talk shit on Death Magnetic, it’s such an amazing album. Hardwired blew it away but Death Magnetic was very very good
Kirk definitely has the potential to write solos as good as these - just look at Fade to Black - but I feel he doesn't always put the effort in, and that's a real shame.
Also, James's second solo on S&R is one of the best and most underrated in Metallica's discography, even the shortened version.
God, 6:30 is pure eargasm
Death magnetic as a whole is MASSIVELY underrated, IMO.
Great work!
In the comment for To Live Is To Die, it mentions that it’s the only riff with audible bass. You can hear bass at about 6:23 on Justice, as well as during the fade in intro to Eye of the Beholder.
I've always loved Dream No More, but that harmony solo was a personal favorite of mine because it always made me think of Dethklok. Brendan Small loves him some harmony solos, haha.
Great content! As a big Metallica fan i loved it! Didn't know that House Jack Built solo was James's
The chorus for escape is another time where they use a major key just wanted to letcha know
This is a very nice video! A banger even!
When James shreds he shreds
1:22 Always Loved that solo My Favorite from James
4:52 one their most underrated songs imo
BROOOO WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT FIGHT FIRE WITH FIRE
Same thing happened to me, I heard it for the first time and literally got emotional haha
I'm sure the entirety of Hardwired was an homage to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and to Metallica themselves, but their sound is really like the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, the solo from Atlas is really inspired by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, like Iron Maiden, who are legends in the New Wave of- (alright enough)
That was one of their biggest influences and the entire nwobhm was the last couple albums they've gotten back to their roots so to speak and I'm loving it. These people that say they haven't done thrash since 88 have probably never gave the last two albums a chance and likely never really listened to either of them.
@@midnight347 EXACTLY! Man I loved the last 2 albums and I dare say they're actually in my top 5 favourites, and with the new album that's coming out having a similar style as the ones before, I'm super hyped

I always loved Suicide and Redemption from the moment I heard it. Letting James and Kirk trade that epic solo battle is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Fun fact about atlas rise. It’s working title while in studio was “NWOBHM” so that’s kinda why it has maiden vibes
4:11 wow that transition
Hero of the day also has a solo in the major key I believe
Nice, I only just learnt the Master of Puppets one was played by James
You missed the outlaw torn final solo
The harmonized lead in Spit Out The Bone is fuckin beautiful music man
Glad UA-cam recommended me this video
Awesome
I want a James Hetfield solo album
The first time I played Suicide and Redemption on Guitar Hero, I was confused by having the option to pick either the James or Kirk version. Played the James version, and that solo was totally unexpected and totally fucking amazing. I couldn't believe James was able to shred like that!
I've seen a video from one of their typical rehearsal a couple days ago. James played there a "solo" for fun which sounded like a bunch of some random notes and was in fact a disabled version of harmony from Fight Fire with Fire. I had really no idea what it was before seeing the comments where someone said it was indeed this harmony part. But until this moment I thought like "hey this sounds weird but familiar somehow". Then I saw next comment saying this solo sounds like the circus march theme (this kinda obscure well-known melody you know) and it suddenly came together in my head. So, maybe James also heard this melody before writing the song (maybe in childhood as the piece was written by Fučík long before James was born) and while writing he unaware played something distantly familiar to himself and somehow it ended up in a cool sounding lick and then the harmonized solo.
The reason I wrote this is that I've been always wondering how that part was written because for me it sounds very unique even through years.
Bonus track: ecstasy of gold, check out the live performance
Never heard that Suicide & Redemption Guitar Hero version. Wow. Just wow.
Metallica is so talented, I love their music
1:55 the best of the best
I cant agree much more with this video
I like how Master Of Puppets James solo sounds like a more chill slowed down Fight Fire With Fire harmony solo
That one from To live Is to Die is actually my favorite Metallica solo.
James and Kirk got an incredible clean tone from the Roland JC-120. It's a bright and utterly crystal clear tone - but each note has a very strong attack. Even live seattle 89, it had that distinct attack, without distortion/twang/buzz. Fucking magic
The amp settings, studio micing, guitars, pickups, string gauge, pick thickness and playing are all perfectly matched. James wanted world domination, and he goddamn got it.
The final solo in the video is probably popular because it's such a throwback
I have file of suicide & redemption that includes both solos (full) quality is good and it's just little bit compressed. Sometimes just feel like I wanna listen this I gotta find and enjoy
The weird videogame solo from My Friend of Misery is from James ?!!! 😳
Wow, unexpected
I am the table
The spit out the bone harmonized solo hits me hard every time, especially the if was on AJFA one by GR
I loved Hardwired because James added a lot of melodic lines into the songs. You could've added the hooks from Moth Into Flame and Halo On Fire as well.
dude spit out the bone is epik
I didn't know James played this many solos. Most of them are actually really good.
yeh, nothing else matters is the first guitar solo I learned, it's really easy
Kirk can shred and has sections of badassery but James' solos are as masterfully thought out as his riffs. That is why he is my favorite guitarist.
You don't see the appeal of the spit out the bone solo? Wow that gave me goosebumps when I heard it for the first time

0:25 sounds like the same solo but the tone switches
