For those who are new....*
Hello! My name is Emily and I own my own business, Emii Creations, selling and designing merchandise and art for sale. My retail business started in 2018 and I mainly go to conventions, local shows, sell online, and sell wholesale to retails stores all over the country. I also have a small consignment partner in Taiwan in case you see my stuff there!
Before Emii Creations I worked in the gaming/VFX industry for companies like Riot Games and Luma Pictures as a Pipeline TD/TA (lots of coding). You can find my credits on movies like Captain America: Civil War, Antman, and Dr. Strange. Although the VFX/Gaming world was so much fun, my dream has always been converting my side hustle into my full-time job and I'm so happy it's working out!

I have been watching your videos and really admire your diligence. When I started the move online, I was on Etsy. I made the move to Shopify this year and honestly, it is like my business has “graduated” to a higher level. I left Etsy and didn’t look back

This is great info. I am not sure if you can help my decision. I have really only been selling wholesale on Faire. But I want to start selling retail.
I have a Wordpress website that is not set up for selling. I don’t know how to use it to make changes so it just sits there.
I don’t have a good mailing list. Would you think it’s best for me to start with Etsy? Or Shopify? Shopify is now part of Faire although I don’t know what that means yet. I would love your feedback.

I think all the points in the video can still apply to you for consideration (following, money needs, brand recognition). However, you may also need to consider how much value you place on inventory tracking. Some people hand-make/made-to-order most of their product so inventory tracking may not be important. However, if you're company finds inventory tracking vital mostly selling bulk with Faire, you may want to utilize the Shopify/Faire partnership app which helps you since inventory cross both platforms for free. However, starting on Shopify does mean the need to invest time to build and drive traffic via social media and email outreach.
So this is mainly assuming you have a low following, would love to start getting sales right away, is okay with slowly building brand awareness:
If inventory tracking is important? Try Shopify first but prepare time for retail outreach.
No need for inventory tracking? Feel free to start with Etsy until that $500 mark. Then you can add/switch to Shopify.
Hope my suggestion helps! There's no perfect answer and I do think its important to also listen to your gut. If you find yourself swayed one way or another deep in your soul, I suggest listening to you above all else.
