They have a load of look outs placed in any direction that the police can approach from and as such are able to get themselves away before the police are able to reach them.
I see these types of scams all the time whenever I visit London (I am from there originally and visit fairly often) and occasionally the police manage to catch a few of them (as well as occasionally preventing them from setting up at all).
The only thing that I have been able to do is try to stop people making any bets by verbally warning them.
Though the problem with doing that is that I have rarely been watching the game and as such I don't know who is a plant. They also do NOT like you doing it and have been threatened by these types of thugs on numerous occasions and have even had to fight to defend myself from them trying to use force to remove me.
However I will continue to try to warn people whenever I see these set up. I will say that along the south bank and on London bridge, IE the one right next to the houses of parliament (the irony being that the amount of police a stones throw away from them as a result) seems to be the most popular areas for them to setup.

This has happened to me many times before (the offer to participate, not actually being scammed), I am from NYC, and this was a common scam growing up usually with cards (three-card monte), and works in a similar way. I've called out these guys twice recently, once in Paris and the other in London, where I saw some tourists about to participate. I recorded and in both instances, I was told not to film, I told them I didn't care, and they got aggressive, I responded with an equal amount of aggression and they backed off. Both times the tourists left without participating and in London they left the spot (Tower Bridge). This is very common and it's a shame. It was called Three-Card Monte (or "Find the Lady," because the challenge was to find the Queen among the three face-down playing cards.) It makes sense why people who film don't step in (10:04): those people are aware that there are ~10 people involved in the scam, and they also know that it is hard to keep track of the scammers that surround them. Furthermore, you're dealing with criminals who have no moral issue with stealing multiple 100s of dollars from innocent, hardworking people, dressed in tracksuits. You better have excellent self-defence skills for when that real threat materialises.
I really wonder though: why isn't there police on this bridge? It's a highly frequented area for tourists, and these scammers are always there. It's the easiest arrest ever. Fish in a barrel!

When done properly the cups and balls/three card monte/three shell game can be genuinely amazing to watch but it's a shame these guys only care about robbing people of their money. I mean I caught the switch when you did it the first time but I had 2 advantages A) I already knew how it was done B) You haven't spent years perfecting your craft of running the cup and balls game. When a pro does it they won't make a mistake on the switch it will be smooth enough that in the moment no chance you're going to see it but you can still play the mind game with them because they want to make sure that you "know" which one it's under so if they make it obvious that that one is right then you know for sure it isn't right but all that does is still puts you at a 50/50 guess or even worse if they are doing 4 or 5 cups/cards. The common sense information to remember is that they wouldn't do it if they thought they were going to lose, do you see casinos offering games where the odds you double your money purely based on a 1/3 guess? No because that would be absolutely insane amounts of risk for the casino to take.

What else is also irritating is that they take up literally an entire pavement, forcing people to walk on the cycle lanes and sometimes the road which is incredibly busy and that then slows down traffic. My dad who I was traveling with got offered to play and he started exposing the scam and ridiculing the scammers and people who were playing.
    He said things like:
    - The ball is in his hand! There is never a ball under the cups and so on. And tried telling the other tourists that the other gamblers who were winning were in on it. They didn’t like that very much and quickly got quite threatening. I calmed the situation down and said it pretty much wasn’t worth it and we went on our way. As you said they have a crowd of people with them who keep a lookout for law enforcement and act as people who win.

I never actually seen this cup&balls thing in Kiev, or in Ukraine in geleral. Our guys prefer more legal "scam", where they'd set some challenge, that seems really easy, but you actually can't do it if you don't know the trick and didn't trained it. Like climb up a special rope ladder or something like that.
But technically it's not a scam, because you can do it, it's just hard, so I guess it's more or less legal. And I guess it's even more proffitable than this cups and balls game, cause you don't need to pay other people, and even though one try of the challenge is much cheaper, usually around few bucks per try, but you'll have a lot of participants.

  • @АлександърРусковски

They do not like not only filming, but even close look at their group sends them somewhere else. Just look longer and stare at the "player" and his entourage a little with a nasty little smile on your face. • @jdjphotographynl
      @jdjphotographynl Рік тому +4

      It's slightly different than that.
It is illegal to, create or transmit a photograph or video of another person without consent when that person is in a private premises or room that is protected from public view, because that translates to a violation of that person’s intimate privacy. Nor is it allowed to film or photograph people if it shows their helplessness (accident victims, drunk people, nude people, homeless people).
Photographing or filming scammers on the street in itself therefore is not illegal in Germany, as the scammers are not in a place where one can reasonably expect privacy, nor are these scammers generally helpless people. Publishing these photos or videos on the other hand is a different ballgame, as also scammers still have portrait rights in the end. But then again, I don't think the police would mind it too much if you would expose scammers with these photos and videos, as that makes the lives of the police a bit easier again. :)

Most of people don't realize, there is a trick called "SCAM", when you pay 50% more than you should. Many people will no agree with me, but that's a fact. Thanks for warning and exposing scammers, which aren't given much of the limelight before. Police must arrest them along their accomplices.

Kees van der Spek (Dutch documentary maker) made a long series about this in different countries. In some episodes he exposes them all and gets into physical fights with the scammers. Also he shows HOW they cheat tourists. And he filmed it all via hidden camera's.
