This woman is so glamour and classy. Enjoyed the lesson. Thanks for sharing.
World class. The instant impact of the voice, the intonation of the playing, the insights given (a combination of scales, chromatic playing and chord notes decided by the ear). And yes, charisma.
intonation of the playing was off actually lol
Good work Lincoln Center. Love this!!
I'd only add that in a minor ii-V-i, the ii chord will normally need that b5. Instead of D-F-A-C, it should be D-F-Ab-C. Nicki Parott is fantastic, and she knows this (she even played an Ab at one point). FWIW, I thought that should be clearly mentioned. Cheers!
She plays much more then a D -7 And she doesn't explain it she does it much to fast to see what she is playing So can anyone tell me what d-7 notes she is playing?
You can even make it a full diminished ii chord and throw in a Cb or B. Isnt jazz awesome
Didn’t realize how much bass was in Blue’s Clues until I watched this and wondered why the riffs sound so familiar.
Blues Clues
Maybe that's why it's called BLUES Clues!!!
@@nathanstutoring year late too this gem how u doin
I saw Nicki Parrott with the Les Paul Trio when Les was 90 years old. She was fabulous. It was an amazing show. Just seeing Les Paul was amazing but Nicki was so good. Les made a joke that before Nicki joined they had a male bass player in the Les Paul Trio but when Nicki joined they became the Les Balls Trio. She enjoyed that joke. Nicki Parrott is a beautiful and extremely talented bass player.
I was wondering if that was the same person. I saw Les Paul Trio with her at the Iridium club, NYC, back in February of 2004. She played bass, and sang on "Is you is or is you ain't my baby". Les hung out for autographs after the show and signed a pickguard for me.
I thought I recognized her. I was looking in the comments to see if it was or not.
I'd name it less boys trio
Jesus that's hilarious xD
Her voice is so smooth.
Bossanova material.
I love your passion, your chops, and tone. Most of all your gentle touch and talk about bass. Thank You Nicki
I'm a drummer, what the hell am I doing here
admit it, you need the B A S S, to do your job...
I am too I thought it was a good idea to play this in a band I’m quite screwed
drums + bass = bestfriends
Listening to the bass player. New concept?
This is just the *BASSICS*
Вячеслав Сергеевич stole ma comment 😥, not actually but that was what I was about to put
Oh yeah.

@@maxalaintwo3578 Yeah, I don't really get it why people like those stupid pun comments so much. But those comments help to promote the vids and the channels so I keep writing them ;)
She's so cool!
So clear and concise. I'm blown away.
Thank you, Ms. Parrott, for being so gracious as to gift us with that wonderful lesson...
This video is aesthetically perfect. Also educationally.
Great lesson. Dear Jazz Academy, please showcase more Nicki Parrot lessons!!!!! Even if she just holds that double bass and just talks, I'd be in my happy place!
Love you Nicki! What a wonderful instrument you play! You sing beautifully, too!
I love the tone of your bass! It's magnificent!
She's a beautiful bassist with class and theory to behold...
Millions and millions of pointless and confusing videos. And then you, like a revelation. You're so good, so refined, so understandable. I wanted to play bass but really started to play (beatle bass, I have to confess) because of you explaining it so well.
Probably because you're an outstanding vocalist, too.
I could never say thank you enough,
You're the "muse" in "music".
It was amazing to hear all the story about playing the bassline in jazz. Thanks ;)
Great video. Would love to hear more of your singing.
What a beautiful voice!
Kickass, she makes this look so easy, this is amazing.
As soon as I heard her hum the tune of Honeysuckle Rose I knew it would be a great video!
Wonderful teaching style Nikki, thanks for the demonstration!
Muy buena clase. Muchísimas gracias profesora.
She’s stunning and a good teacher.
Fantastic Nicki, thanks!!
Thank you for a great video!
I'm not a beginner bass player, I love a lot of different kinds of jazz but I'm not experienced or trained at playing it. Now, I found it hard to follow along with the chord changes and what time signature it was, during the bass lines you played. It's of course because of my untrained ear and lack of experience with it, but I wanted to point it out, then you can decide if I'm within your target group or not and see if you want to take it in to account in the future.
But my main message is thank you a lot for a great video!
Best regards, J
Hands down Mrs. Parrot kept it one hundred & well enough for every type of broom sweeper out there. It appears that additionally what I copped from here was that any type of walker that takes interest in simply playing the blues can transpose it anyway they so desire simply whether its done it Eb, Bb, C, and so on and make it sound funky, jazzy and on and on. Instructor Parrot is awesome.
Muchas gracias querida Nicki ❤ Además de gran artista eres generosa, gracias esta lección amplia mi perspectiva del.jazz
THANk YOU!! You can’t imagine how much you’ve helped me with this basics!
Breaking the “ misteries” of this so beautifull instrument that touch me so much..!!
Enjoyed this, thank you. I'm just getting started on the upright bass. I want to learn all forms, but my main interest is rockabilly.
Had to watch 3 times. The 3rd time I actually started listening whart she was talking about.
The 1st 2, I was watching her ! LOL Great Video, thanks for sharing.
Hot damn that bass sounds good in my headphones! Heavy like a drum! 🥰
Yes, very full bodied with a great push and presence to it.
Bass drum
What a pleasant voice. Thanks Nikki.
Minor ii V i progressions usually use a minor 7 b 5 for the ii chord, alterations on the V chord like b9 or #9, and a minor-major 7th or minor 6th chord for the i chord. It's pretty rare to hear a vanilla min7 dom7 min progression, at least in jazz.
I'm currently taking a class on ii half diminished to V7b9 and diminished patterns. You're dead on the money, good sir! Only time I've experienced the "vanilla" progression is in blues and funk stuff. But then I'm a total noob to jazz bass playing. Just now getting acquainted with the repertoire.
She was introducing a basic concept guys.
That's probably why they called this Fundamentals of Jazz.
What the heck did you just say?
Talented and beautiful.
I only play bass guitar (and electric guitar), but I'd love to play an upright bass on a jazz/blues band. It is like one of my childhood dreams.
I have been a guitar player since I was 7 (39 now) and love playing jazz. Even so, I always wanted to play bass in a trio. I just kept working on guitar mastery since it was what I started with. Maybe one day!
Very nice intonation!
What a classy, smart and beautiful woman.
My goodness she is a pretty lady, good teacher and a bassist. Total package to me.
@@fonkamex most definitely mate. She has it all
Big Thanks from Egypt!
Thanks for this video! You sound great and make it so easy to understand! Been playing rock and country all my life and now getting into Jazz!!!
Best spent 6 minutes and 40 seconds this month!
Pretty and talented! I'm a violin maker but getting ready to make my very first electronic contra double bass!!!
Very good! I recommend this lesson strongly!!
Exellent master saludos desde Guatemala city
Very good class!!
Thanks, I needed that.
Classy! Classy bassist and singer!
I saw her at the litchfield jazz camp this summer
What? A jazz camp? How can I get there???
Her point in 5:13 makes all the difference between a good bass player and a good musician.
Great!!! Thank you!!! Nice playing!!!
I'm in love!!!
Beautiful!
I love your voice ma'am.. very calm..
Wow fascinating. Would ask how I got here but I’m reading Blue Giant so that explains it.
Stunning
Used to enjoy Nicki playing with Les Paul at both of the Iridiums (over time) in Manhattan.
Great exercices thanks very good of perseption see you later.
Truly inspiring 👍
You are fabulous, thank you
Great insight into the magic of music…..☮️🎶🔛🌎
She's very Beautiful! Excellent demonstration, excellent singing voice
When shes playing i start looking for blue pawprints
Me encantó la parte que canta aunque fuera tan corto
beauty jazz , thank you
Nicki is far and away my favorite bassist. Her playing is SO tasteful.
And plus who doesn't like Australians? Seems like when you got someone from down under doing anything they wipe the floor with everyone else xD
Love this video, pure class and great teaching! I could listen to her do the vah-vah-voh-voh-vay all day long - is there an album like that? :D
I’ve had a double bass for almost 15 years and just found out today that I been playing it wrong the entire time lol! Could you explain the left hand positioning and where to put your fingers down properly? I’m mainly an electric bass player and kinda went at it like that and it just was wrong and hurt after a few mins of playing.
Classy, regal, royal....
N she handles the upright bass so easy
Finally I understood ❤️ thank you
Wow what a voice (human and instrument).
you can't lose if you play the blues. words to live by
Good lesson 👍🏿
You have a marvelous voice.
Your speaking voice is beautiful, your singing voice is beautiful, you are beautiful, and you are a great bass player! Wow! What a combination! I am going to the academy.jazz next. thank you for this short tutiorial.
Best way to learn is to listen to Eddie Jones. Eddie spent a decade with Count Basie, IIRC replacing Walter Page, in the rhythm section with Freddie Green and Sonny Payne. Greatest swing rhythm section ever - IMHO.
You can find videos on youtube too. :)
Oh, the good memories of the double bass playing in Blues Clues
Wonderful!
Great stuff
Good sound
GREAT LESSON!!!
I want you to play in my JAZZTET
if jazz had a voice it would be her
the american walrus * Esperanza Spalding
I feel like if Jazz had a voice it would be an old African-American man with a smokey voice
@@gorkaaustin5306 that seems more like blues to me
vocals is the only part of jazz women have dominated, dont take that away from them
@@djonskimu1148 what's being said here is that no white person is going to stand as the embodiment of a black art form.

I Love You Nicki..
Mesmerised :)
Thank you
Excellent. 🎻🎺🎼🎶
Thank you !
She gives me a heart attack every time she takes *_BOTH_* hands off of the bass.
😧
As a (standing) upright player, we do this all the time. Our instrument is a lot more balanced than you'd reckon.
The instrument is balanced
I didn't know what you meant until I saw her let go the bass! Mannn...boom ooops!
It will balance as long as your hip kinda hold it up
Thank you beautiful lady. You are a legend, you played with Les Paul!
I've been mucking about with bass guitars so long that an upright seems enormous to me now. Nice lesson still.
I like it
lovely thanks
Your singing's lovely! :) x
C`est magnifique !!! bises-B.
Would anyone be able to tell me what brand/model of bass strings are being used?
Any transcriptions available? Nice lines
thank you for lesson boss
