Thanks. Very interesting to hear an actual account of abandoning ship in the open ocean. Gotta say I admire your calm and methodical approach, too! 🙇♂
Thank You for this tip with the survival suite ! I am sure , not many of us thought about , how cold the nights are even in warm areas . Your body sits directly on the water !!!
Glad you are safe and well Martin, it must have been a terrible time for Anke. You always seem a level headed, organised fellow which must have stood you in good stead during your ordeal. Best wishes.
Delighted to see you safe and well Martin. And very gracious of you to share your experience. I have 21 years experience as Lifeboat crew in Ireland and your survival is testament to your planning, your seamanship and your composure. SV Jambo may have gone to the depths but I hope to see you and Anke on the high seas again in 2024.
Martin, I have followed your channel from the start. I have been amazed at the challenges you took on and achieved on your Bavaria HOLIDAY! Your calm problem solving, like dealing with a fire mid-Atlantic, and being dissmasted have always inspired me, and I am sure this is true for the rest of your viewers. The way you dealt with this situation should be taught as part of off shore training and a YM qualification. Your positive outcome has everything to do with you, not luck. I'm so happy we will see you sail again. Thank you so much for sharing and teaching us all how to cope in the face of tragedy. 👍 "So, we see how it goes!" 😊
Well done Martin . I sail around the English Channel and the Biscay Coast of France single handed on a modern Dufour and I'm always aware of the problem of loosing the rudder. You obviously did a fantastic job in staying safe and being rescued. I have followed you on utube for a long time and look forward to following you in the future on your new boat. The very best of luck.
I'm so pleased to hear that you are safe Martin. I've followed your adventures for years and was just telling a friend over the summer holiday how I didn't know how you did it in a little Bavaria over the oceans and then checked in with your channel to find this has happened. Well done for staying so calm, surviving and sharing your invaluable experience. Congratulations on your new boat and safe travels. I'm very envious of the ketch upgrade!
Thank you very much! Yes, fortunately, all is well at my end and I survived! I am looking forward to the coming adventures! Best regards and all the best for you 😀⛵⛵
Oh no! Martin, I didn’t know about this until recently. I saw a comment on another sailing channel they said your boat sank. Then I saw this in German so just waited for the English video to get the details. So happy you’re ok. You’re my solo sailing idol… I’ve admired how calm you always are. It’s always made me think, maybe I can? We’ll see. Anyways, looking forward to watching your next chapter Captain!
Oh my God! Martin I have been so busy with work that I only just had been catching up on your videos. I had no idea this happened. You would have sailed right past my window as you went up the Hudson past New York. I'm so glad you're safe. The great sailing adventure continues!!
Thank you Martin. There is always more to learn in a disaster than a perfect sail and I appreciate the lesson! You have confirmed my decision to look for a full keel hull. Looking forward to seeing your next adventures. Fair winds.
3 yrs out from traveling the world. Watched the keel/rudder debates over and over. My budget is nice used production boat or slightly smaller Island Packet. After this, IP it is.
We love your spirit, Martin and Anke, thank you for sharing so openly your experience. Because you are here and safe, you did everything right. Well done! We look forward. to following your further adventures and also hope to cross paths with you on both our travels on the water. Namaste.
Gosh i only was watching one of your video's from months ago and spotted the live updates.....I had not heard of your vessel sinking . So glad you are well and smiling as always.....you are an inspiration.
So glad for your levelheadedness and forward preparation: engineer at the rescue. I am so impressed with the way you quickly assessed the water ingress, grabbed bags and items not in the bags that you quickly added to the bounty of the newly floated rescue boat. I believe that by you doing the boat inflation first after you realized you had to ditch saved your life because it afforded you time to grab other necessary items before the peril of submerging became apparent. I make note of adding the survival suit per person to be in order for the next boat. You can’t live if you cannot control your temperature properly. I’ve always been surprised that the survival suites weren’t standard issue. They should be. We are more fragile than we realize temperature/water intake wise. So glad you got back to your family. Thanks for being willing to discuss this important learning experience. Be well and joyful.
Great to hear your story and lessons learned, not just for you but for all who watch this. Most importantly you are safe, and that is because of the preparations and planning as you set out on your voyage. Good luck in your plans, looking forward to seeing you future videos of Jambo and your new boat
I was not aware of your accident until today and I am very sad about what happened to you. Thankfully you came out alive and well. I think that you are taking the right decision to get another boat so that you can continue to have a joyful life. Cheers, Richard
Glad you had adequate safety arrangements and made a timely decision to abandon the ship. Hope this incident will not deter you from sailing around the world. All the best!!
Martin fantastic to hear you are safe and in good spirits after your rescue at sea. Glad you kept your level head as usual and handled the matter perfectly. Really look forward to your upcoming videos and then videos in the future of your new boat whatever that may be. Please show what you can of your time in the raft and rescue., its a rare thing that someone is as prepared as a UA-camr to take video of such a situation.
Martin. You a remarkable fellow. I was always impressed by the attention to details you displayed in your previous videos, especially with regard to safety systems and preparation, As such, your calm and quick response to this potential disaster was no surprise. I suspect the most difficult times for you were the following hours alone in the liferaft awaiting rescue and the days onward to South Africa. Quite an experience, I'm sure. You have my respect and admiration sir. Best regards for the future.
OMG, what a shock! You. of all people, vey experienced sailor, very meticulous with your equipment, everything up to date with the best of everything on board! Thank God you made it out alive.
Thank you for sharing your story Martin. Having right safety equipment and being prepared for worst of circumstances is so very important. Good your safe and insurance paid out. Look forward to your next adventure!
Geez I am sorry to hear about Jambo - I have loved watching your sailing - the last one I saw was you leaving the Azores after getting your rig checked..Martin may I ask - I think you said you had a Viking life raft - was that one with a double insulated floor ?
Martin quite an experience and for Anke too, glad you get to fight another day. You have given me some thought as to what should be in the grab bag and priorities. What surprised me was communicating with the rescue vessel via text. I get it when they were 20 hrs away but once they were with you surely a marine handheld VHF would have been a better option. I'm assuming you had one? Don't I sound like a Monday morning quarterback. 😊 I'm now thinking survival suits should be on my shopping list. If your temperature was 33 c and continued dropping had you fallen asleep this story could have been very different. From what you have said my thinking now is that on an ocean passage, they are pretty much essential for all crew.
So glad you’re safe Martin. Really enjoyed your videos on here for the last few years. Not on social media so first I knew of your fate was video posted by member of ships crew. Your experience just goes to show the importance of being prepared! Hope this does not put you off sailing again in the future 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Being sailor myself I wish you will find a right boat. Production boats are good for very costal sailing. You allready have Anke, so you only need strong hull. Be positive as usual and fair winds Martin!
Glad to see you're okay and insurance paid up - I wish you luck in finding a new Jambo! Moody 44, Amel, or if you're willing to not go for a 44ft boat, a Westerly Sealord or Oceanlord would fit the bill (no skeg rudder, but Westerly being Westerly, they're built like absolute tanks). Hopefully you will take us along on your "let's go look at a boat" trips, and again, I wish you luck in finding your next boat and taking us with you on your next adventures :)
Congratulatios for your rescue. It has been shocking for me to learn about the sinking of Jambo. I am very sorry that he lost his boat almost as much as I am glad that he kept his blood cold and his head alert and overcame the ordeal and was successfully rescued. My thanks to all those involved in his rescue and especially to the captain of the merchant who came to his aid. I hope to see him soon sailing again aboard his new sailboat.
Glad you are OK, I think it's good to talk about it so others can learn. Do you feel spade rudders are too vulnerable for ocean crossings now? I'm conflicted.
Thak you Martin and Anka. I admire your openness. I'm also a Bavaria sailor. And as i replaced the complete housing and the lower rudder stock bearing on my old Bavaria 41 i looked at the construction of the aft end of the boat. It is a bad construction for interaction with orcas or other things that might damage the rudder. I have decided to make the aft bulkhead a watertight bulkhead and to stabilise the support for the bearing housing. I have also started to look into building a steel sailing yacht.... but this option is crazy expensive and I dont know if I'll pursue this option further. Even though I have purchased the plans for a yacht. Thanks for many good advices snd for sharing your knowledge. Im sorry for your loss. Best wishes for the future. Maybe I'll se you out there some day. Best regards from Jarle
Martin, all my best wishes and glad you are OK !! Looking forward to continue following you in any future adventures !!! Admire your positive thinking .... Best regards ... Merry Xmas and big Cheers from Muros !!!
Fortunately you are safe and thank you so much for sharing this last experience with Jambo. I wish you to find out asap your new ship and looking forward to following your next inspiring cruises. All the best, Emmanuel
Dear Martin, I’ve been following your channel since early 2021 starting with your passage from Carribean - I think Martinique to Germany and watched all your past and recent videos since then. I was a little worried as no new videos were shot and not using any social media, I could not figure out what happened to you for a while until I googled you and look at your Instagram page. I was firstly shocked but then absolutely thankful for your survival. You are geniunely one of my top 5 UA-cam creators and I am looking forward to watching you sailing wherever you desire. All the best and have a wonderful new year.
What a terrible situation Martin. So happy to see you are ok and handling the situation so well. Maybe an Orion like Distant Shores' next?. Cheers, and take care, both of you.
Hi Martin! Thank God you made it. It must had been a lifetime experience ❤ Looking forward for your next adventures 😀 we are happy to have pictures of Jambo from Martinique marine in January. Greetings, Ágnes and Viktor
I appreciate the safety feedback Martin. Your comment related to communication [duration] prioritization along with water and survival suit is important.
Such bad luck you have had, last year losing your mast on the atlantic crossing and now this sinking. At least you're safe and well that's the main thing. Best of luck in the future.
Wow, shocked to hear. Me and my wife follow you and must say you are a great inspiration. Sad that Jambo sunk with all work put into it, but good to hear you still look to buy a new boat and continue the adventures. Good that nothing happened except material loss and that insurance paid up. Looking forward to follow you on next boat. Also, the German engineer mindset and preparation was the key to successful surviving. Keep the channel going we are hooked and could not understand why no new vidoes for so long. Now we know. Keep it up.
Hi Martin. Not sure if you’re still reading comments from this video, but I’ve just seen it and am very glad that you survived this incident. Sounds from your live feed comments that you were well prepared and acted quickly and decisively throughout which is to be commended. Two light hearted, but genuine questions I have are as follows. Had you seen the Robert Redford film ‘All is lost’ before your incident, if not have you seen it since? There are striking similarities between the film and your incident. Do you now have a lifetime sponsorship from Iridium Go? If not you should reach out to them, you must have helped them sell lots of units in the last few months and will continue to do so. Thanks for sharing your experiences, I hope you find a way to share the footage as I’d love to see your escape from Jumbo, time in the life raft and rescue by the freighter. Wishing you the best of luck in your future adventures.
Hi Simon, thank you very much. Yes, I saw that movie years ago. Yes, quite similar accident. I have no sponsorship from Iridium. Best regards and fair winds 😀⛵️
Wow, I wasn't expecting that! So glad you are safe, and also that it hasn't put you off the sailing life. To be dismasted then suffer a total loss must be heart breaking. Just a couple of thoughts: I'm surprised your rudder got hit if it was a container, surely the keel would have been in contact first? The chances of a container missing the keel but hitting the rudder seem impossibly small. Skegs have their vulnerabilities too. I've heard of incidents where the skeg was ripped off leaving a gaping hole in the boat - with similarly disastrous results. I believe Amel's have water tight bulkheads forward of the rudder post (as well as in the forward sections), that seems like a very robust solution to me. Good luck in your search for the next Jambo!
So nice to see you healthy and happy back from this huge intense experience Martin❤..and thanks for all the information and explanations..and hope you sail again soon. Bravely forward and sail with the wind of today..or at least try😅
@@mjambo697 ...well that makes more sense. Do you have a video of the sinking and what went wrong on that sailboat? Actually, I am starting to like Bavaria sailboats so I am a bit surprised to learn that it sank. But Amel is super nice.
Thank you to you both for a very interesting and informative talk about Martin's experiences. As far as a new boat is concerned, you could consider some of the boats which went around the world in the Golden Globe race in 2022 and the races before that. I think there are many videos on UA-cam about the boats including one by the Austrian Michael Guggenberger (if I have his name right). I think these are GRP boats but well built. However, as you said, you may want a steel boat.
Why not use a kevalar boat with epoxy resin? Epoxy resin is 3x more expensive & much much more rugged than marine resin. Epoxy will flex & take a blow without breaking.
I'm really sorry you lost your boat, but glad you survived. I listened to your survival story VERY carefully!
Thank you.
Thank you very much! We are looking for a new boat. Best regards 😀⛵
I enjoy watching your travels. Very glad to hear and see that you are okay!

Hi Simon, thank you very much. Yes, I saw that movie years ago. Yes, quite similar accident. I have no sponsorship from Iridium. Best regards and fair winds 😀⛵️
Good to see that you are safe and sound!
Thank you 😀⛵️⛵️
Wow, I wasn't expecting that! So glad you are safe, and also that it hasn't put you off the sailing life. To be dismasted then suffer a total loss must be heart breaking. Just a couple of thoughts:
I'm surprised your rudder got hit if it was a container, surely the keel would have been in contact first? The chances of a container missing the keel but hitting the rudder seem impossibly small.
Skegs have their vulnerabilities too. I've heard of incidents where the skeg was ripped off leaving a gaping hole in the boat - with similarly disastrous results. I believe Amel's have water tight bulkheads forward of the rudder post (as well as in the forward sections), that seems like a very robust solution to me.
Good luck in your search for the next Jambo!
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
So nice to see you healthy and happy back from this huge intense experience Martin❤..and thanks for all the information and explanations..and hope you sail again soon. Bravely forward and sail with the wind of today..or at least try😅
Thank you very much and best regards 😀⛵⛵
Wow! Very interesting. Trying to watch everything regarding this. So it was an Amel that sank? I thought that they had some waterproof compartments??
No, it was the Bavaria, which sank, the new boat in an Amel.
@@mjambo697 ...well that makes more sense. Do you have a video of the sinking and what went wrong on that sailboat? Actually, I am starting to like Bavaria sailboats so I am a bit surprised to learn that it sank. But Amel is super nice.
I’m glad you made it out alive!
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
Hello I'm glad that you are home safe again after this horrific experience. I can recommend boats from Hallberg Rassy if you want a safe ship. 👍
Thank you 😀⛵️
What a Thanksgiving Day story. Your cool, unflappability never fails you! Well done.
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
Must be very shocking for you glad your all right. You were very calm during the process it seems.
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
I hope your insurance company answers your calls after the mast loss and now the boat. better luck in the future, you deserve it.
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
Great video.
Thanka a lot 😀⛵⛵
happy you are safe
RIP Jambo
Thanks a lot
Would a forward facing sonar system have helped detect the container you hit?
I don’t know
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ . Love from Cph. Captain Moller
Thank you very much 😀⛵⛵
Crazy story, glad it al turned out the way it is
Thank you very much 😀⛵⛵
What happened to your boat tender/dinghy?
Thank you to you both for a very interesting and informative talk about Martin's experiences. As far as a new boat is concerned, you could consider some of the boats which went around the world in the Golden Globe race in 2022 and the races before that. I think there are many videos on UA-cam about the boats including one by the Austrian Michael Guggenberger (if I have his name right). I think these are GRP boats but well built. However, as you said, you may want a steel boat.
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
Very many thanks for sharing the information.
Our pleasure 😀⛵️
Why not use a kevalar boat with epoxy resin? Epoxy resin is 3x more expensive & much much more rugged than marine resin. Epoxy will flex & take a blow without breaking.
Ich hoffe ihr findet recht schnell euer neues Traumboot.
Vielen Dank! Schöne Weihnachten und einen guten Rutsch🌲😀⛵
Glad you're OK. Was checking your UA-cam channel from time to time but nothing was there.. First time I hear that you sank...!!
Thank you very much 😀⛵⛵
A lot of world cruisers have amel yachts
Could it have been an Orca?
I don't think so
It could have been a whale.
Fy fader!!!! Huff, huff!!!!!
Great video.
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
