In this tutorial we demonstrate a technique for skinning/wrapping the upper and lower grips of a car steering wheel using ForgeTEX® Premium Bold® forged carbon fiber fabric. The method shown here does not require vacuum bagging. We also show how to fit the secondary grips with custom leather coverings.
    0:16 Preparing Part and Supplies
    2:32 Applying Epoxy Resin
5:08 Applying ForgeTEX® Forged Carbon Fiber Fabric
10:53 Finishing the Forged Carbon Fiber Surface
    12:42 Applying Custom Leather Grips
    Details:
    1. We left the secondary grip covers in place until after installing the carbon fiber since they were to be discarded and replaced with new leather. If you wish to reuse any grip covering material, be sure to carefully remove all pieces before beginning the carbon fiber skinning process as resin may leak under the tape and damage the material. Any material left on the wheel may also be damaged during the carbon fiber trimming process of not first removed.
    2. ForgeTEX® is cut larger than the template to allow overlap and ensure full coverage. Any irregularity in thickness due to this overlap is easily leveled during sanding the stage.
    3. The double layer of ForgeTEX® forged carbon fabric is still very thin and should be sanded only just enough to smooth the surface and reveal the pattern. If the surface is sanded too aggressively and the underlying material revealed by mistake, simply use fabric offcuts to patch the area, allow to cure and sand to blend the area seamlessly into the overall pattern.

You made this look easy. I would probably have to do this 5 times before I got any decent results 😅

That’s a different way I’ll try it. I normally put the chopped carbon on then wrap around

    Looks great! Solid work.
Do you still know how much carbon you used for this? Looking to do it on mine and I’d like to know how much I need for the upper and lower part of the gripping area.

I can't understand why the leather grip section is first completely covered with masking tape, and then @ 12:15 it is suddenly off and the leather is replaced without explanation. Yes it is smooth leather as opposed to perforated, but the previous covering looked fine. Was there a need to replace the leather? Did it get damaged?

The faux leather grip material was replaced with a lightweight top grain leather for cosmetic purposes. Tape was applied over the grip area to minimize mess during the carbon application process.
If an existing grip covering is to be kept in a final part, it typically needs to be removed then reapplied after the carbon skinning process is complete.

If you are looking to do a regular twill carbon fibre wheel, I suggest watching eco lap’s video on it, he does a really good job

@ulticarbon Why the two layers with raw side facing inward (backing on outside)?

    • @ULTICARBON
      @ULTICARBON  3 роки тому

Two layers to provide enough thickness since this would be sanded after cure, and backing outward for easier handling during application.

Title should be how not to skin a steering wheel.
