Great review as always. I got the kickstarter edition at my flgs. So happy to have this game as part of my collection. Fits into a unique place especially as someone who also plays as a solo player. I look forward to more content!
@Joel - Hey, the Nova Open is open for registration. Thursday - Sat you can play WarCry during the day (Grand Tournament and then two Narrative days) and Frostgrave in the evenings! I’m going for sure, would love to see you come out!
I'd love to get out to Nova. One of these days I'll try. Frankly, I need to hit Adepticon or even LVO (which is close to me) as well.
Played the retail version yesterday and enjoyed it. I share your sentiments with the standees. I wish they were at least rounded at the top corners for a nicer look. Unique punch outs would have been best.
i backed this not expecting much of anything, even thought once or twice it'd probably end up kinda mediocre.
Pleasantly surprised it's been so well received and is getting such high praise.
I had bouts of nervousness as well :)
I like those standees much more than minis, small, colourful, easy to store and use, so much better than gray plastic.
I wonder how this compares to War of the Worlds New wave or A few Acres of Snow? Just thinking about other deck building dudes on a board games.
It's a bit more like War of the Worlds, but honestly blows that one out of the water completely. A Few Acres is kind of it's own thing I think. Ascension doesn't have any of that those "logistical" type cards.
Great video as usual Joel!
Some questions for you:
1) does this compare favourably to Warhammer Underworlds in terms of gameplay? It certainly does in terms of cost (standee version), ease of play (no deck construction) and not being tied to a CCG/Lifestyle model... and not being Games workshop!
But what about the gameplay?
I think I would lean in favor of Underworlds honestly, but as you say, you can't undersell the buy-in. One to one, maybe gives Tactics the edge, because you get a lot in the one box, but I find the Underworlds gameplay more interesting to be honest.
Thanks for the review, I have had my eye on this one as I have played tons of the original Ascension on the ipad. I would like to hear your thoughts on this vs the Undaunted games. Which one flows better?
They are pretty different. The card pool in Undaunted is much much smaller and the deckbuilding really serves as a kind of fog of war or command confusion idea. The number of cards and combos in Ascension makes it more of a traditional deckbuilding feel. And, there's no random dice rolls for combat (which is neither good or bad to me). I do find the objectives and scenarios more interesting here than in Undaunted. As far as "flow"... hard to say really. They're both really smooth :)
@@DriveThruReview Dang. Sounds like I need both then.
I avoided the Kickstarter for this. It seemed too iffy. But, from your review, it looks fun and something worth picking up.
For the"standees, is there any reason they wouldn't work being laid flat on the board as chits? It's hard to tell the size and whether they'd fit OK within the hexes flat.
That should actually work fine. It will not "perfectly" shaped for the hexes but it will work OK.
Looks like the retail version of the board is smaller and doesn’t come with the row spaces
Do the miniatures have a number on the bottom that matches the number on the back page of the rulebook?
No, but it's easy to tell which miniature is which based on the picture on the back.
2) you mentioned some weakness in higher player counts, the usual A fights B, so C wins.
But what do you think of this plan:
For 3p, play the 1vAll mode
For 4p, play teams 2v2 mode
Apparently all of these modes are in the rulebook.
Do you think they have developed these modes robustly enough to work well?
Regards, Salman
I'm not sure. I only find this fun at the two player count. It just gets too chaotic with more for me.
Subbing for the intro theme alone
Haha. Can't take credit for it. A viewer made it for me a few years ago. I love it too :)
Wow, nice viewer. Well your content is on point thank you. Debating getting this game now.
Lets hope they make an android app of this :)
They mixed white and black bordered cards? The Horror!
Hence sleeves :)
My only concern with the miniatures is that it will take significantly longer to produce expansions. (As I’m writing this I’m realizing what a privileged life I’m living to be concerned about that)
