They probably had to switch to paper money once metal bending was invented.
Because counterfeiting would then be incredibly easy
Also, gold is used in electronic circuitry, which makes me wonder why gold bars are still a unit of currency irl
@HuskerHornet3145 probably because they use electroplating so there's only a really really thin layer of gold on the circuitry
@@EldenRingplayer407gold bars are as much a currency as Google stock.
You'll have difficulties paying with it in a shop but no issue converting it for digits representing a currency.
Having a use simply gives a bottom to the price, if gold was cheap it would replace copper in every wire on Earth.
It's a commodity.
@@EldenRingplayer407although gold is rare, it's not that rare. There's more than anoigh gold to build a large city out of the stuff is we really wanted to. Besides that, it's not used as currency in most places anymore. USD backs most currencies, and Yuan or Ruble back most of the rest. The value of these currencies is backed by the governments which supply them, and will force businesses under their jurisdiction to accept them.
@@LP-tf7cy you do realize USD is gold based right?
Putting Aang's face on money, especially high value notes, seems to miss the point of what an Air Nomad is.
That is true, considering the Air Nomads wore effectively monks, not finding value in money.
You know you’ve given me a fanfic idea
I see it more as a tribute, since Aang was the one who founded Republic City as well
Well he was the founder of Republic City and a historical figure. It would make sense for them to honor him by putting him on their currency
@@alexvineyard3045 plus the statue !!
Thjs...this is just how money worked in history
Fr lol
That's the point
I mean im pretty sure that what Korra said meant that Korra had lived with her parents up to that point not necessarily her getting money for being the Avatar
I do think it partially has to do with her being the avatar. It isn't that she is paid for being the avatar-its that she spent her entire life in elaborate trainings with professional tutors. They don't want the Avatar's mastery of the elements to be held up by hunger or the lack of other basic needs.
Then the money vanishes like Goodbye Zuko *was here*

They switched to paper bills because of metal benders
I like that Korra doesn't need money, and she's dating one of the richest people in Republic City.
Because she spent most of her life at the South Pole in a compound training intensively for years.

Very interesting 👏 👏 👏
People forget that paper money was invented in ancient China...
I’ve got a question what time is avatar set?
atla is hard to pinpoint,
korra is based around 1920's-1930's,
in the show atla takes place around 100AG, while korra takes place around 170AG
If you compare it with our history, ATLA is the middle of the 19th century (SteamPunk), while TLOK is the early 20th century (DieselPunk).
??????????😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅hah I don't know
Fun fact, you can like a comment by double tapping it! ♥️
I really wish you actually knew how to pronounce yuan, because saying it like you on isn't even in the ballpark of being correct. it's closer to being pronounced yen like the Japanese currency, although that's not really correct either. the a in yuan becomes an e sound the same as the a in jian, and the u is actually pronounced like the Chinese ü not that most Americans can pronounce that.
❤❤❤❤❤❤😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮🎉
EARLY 8 MINS AGO
ooo im early
And even ATLA has inflation
Naurr💀
Probably not. The gold standart was still used by the industrial revolution and thus your paper money was based of real gold. Much more comfortable to carry than a chest full of gold.
It was in later years that we strayed of the path of healthy economics.
Also a time gap of 70 years between the two shows...

Shouldn't the earth kingdom be the richest nation, since they can literally dig wither their bending for gold?
I mean yea but just because they can dig up gold doesn't mean that there's enough gold there in the earthnation for them to be the wealthiest in the world or if there's any gold at all there.
@@kingjames6948the earth nation is by far the largest though
I’ve brought this up before in a similar video. The money in Avatar makes no sense based on the scaling of what costs what. I’m only going to focus on the earth nation cause that’s where the majority of the money scenes happen.
Zuko and Iroh begged a regular guy for a single gold piece.
Toph was kidnapped and her ransom was 500 gold pieces.
500 gold pieces for the richest family in the whole world’s only child. You’d think that must be worth at least equivalent to $1m US dollars minimum. Well if Zuko and Iroh got a gold piece from that regular guy that means they earned the equivalent of $2k in begging. I’d be dancing around like Iroh too with no shame for $2k. It’s either that or they danced for a gold piece that’s worth maybe $20 would be a very generous gift for a begger but that would mean Toph’s ransom was only $10k. Toph’s rich family only having to pay $10k for her ransom would be crazy cheap.
Toph Parents could lowkey have another child so the ransom was probably something that was very feasible for an easy buck.
it's also vary by size
$100k is not a small ransom by any means, at least by modern standards. look up what gets paid in actual hostage negotiations, $100k would be on the higher end. now remember it wasn't actually a ransom, it was in fact a recovery fee, that's a lot of money to pay for 1 job especially considering that in this world there's plenty of bounty hunters who would probably take a job for less.
@@Puckett. okay sorry you said $10k not $100k, however my point actually still stands, $10k isn't an especially small ransom payment, although it's certainly not an amazingly large one. that still isn't that weird because again, it's not a ransom but rather a reward, and again there's plenty of bounty hunters who would take the job. for comparison June, one of the top bounty hunters was more than willing to take a job for less than half that if memory serves.
@@yamiyomizuki I’m not sure you’re understanding the difference between a ransom and a bounty. Toph’s parents weren’t paying Toph as a bounty. They were paying her as a ransom. You pay for a bounty when you want a criminal to face justice. You pay a ransom when you care deeply about the person you are trying to bring back.

Everything about korra was great, besides korra.
I liked Korra as a character, but not as an Avatar. Idk why they wrote her getting beat up for 90% of the show with little payoff.

Hey zuko here😅
Gold. Silver. Bitcoin. Fiat.
Long ago, the four currencies lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fiat Nation attacked.
Only the Satoshi, master of all four currencies, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished.
A few years passed and my accountant and I discovered the new Satoshi, a tech-savvy programmer named Jia Tan.
And although his coding skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to decentralize anything.
But I believe Jia can save the economy.
😂😂

We do see a green paper currency when Korra and team travel to Ba Sing Se. Was that just Green Yuans or is there a unique design?

@@Thalia_Grace I meant did the animators just take the yuans and make them green hoping it would go unnoticed.
Same how Canadian dollars and US dollars are both called dollars

Technically, would gold bending be possible? Also earth benders would have a crazy monopoly on money if they were located on ground that contained gold. Either way, hope the Avatar world figures out Bitcoin as well.

They changed the money from coins to paper money after Toph invented metal bending.

Cant... people... earthbend... or y'know metalbend for mining??
Its probably not worth the effort. I dont think earth benders can sense gold or other rare minerals more than a few meters deep, and searching it would be a waste of time.
I guess mining is easier in the Avatar universe, but rare metals are still rare, except for platinum.
Economy is really similar
korra was surrounded by white lotis sentries until she left the south pole. She didn’t know what money felt like.
