THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video. It is such an inspiration to see video made from a woman's perspective. I have seen a lot of garden or market garden from man's perspective...not so much from women. So again thank you.
I’ve seen many videos but this video by far knocks this technique out of the park. Bravo! Thank you for sharing. I’ve subscribed and will follow you and your adventures.
Thank you so so much! I really loved these in Kentucky. Now that I’m in Michigan I really need to make some more. Thanks for following along! I’ll make more low tunnel videos soon!
Yes! They work really well too! I use them around my house for so many things too. lol curtain ties, chip clips. They’re so much stronger than anything else. ;)
I made mine almost the same way. I used 2 1" pipes to make the in ground posts that way it makes it a little taller on the sides. Then I use woodchips to seal the plastic with the ground. We had back to back 22 degree nights and everything was fine. I'd say you did a fantastic job. I have 5 tunnels up this year 1 for the seedlings. I'm in Pennsylvania 6b and I'm 47 days ahead of last year. Next year I'm building raised garden beds and I'll have hoops on all of them. When it's warm throw some netting on to keep the critters out.
That is so awesome! 5 of them?! That’s so much food!!! Great job! I love the idea of them being taller. And the netting for the animals is something I’m doing this year because my dog has been wanting to use mine as some cool places to sleep lol! :) happy gardening! Thanks for sharing!!
I love the simplicity: thank you for sharing your cost friendly idea..it can be adapted for different weather conditions, pest protection (getting lots of rain in Ireland at the moment)
I’m so glad you like it! I am about to make some new ones at our new property in the UP. I’m hoping it will help keep things warm. Almost every night here is cool. Ireland!? Beautiful! I would love to know if you use these what it does for you in your climate. :)
That’s so awesome! That’s a lot of growing space! I had 2 as well and I was able to grow soooo much. I started zucchini early and avoided the squash bugs for the most part so I got a lot of zucchini for once lol! Thank you for watching, and happy growing!!!
This is seriously awesome! Thank you so very much for these budget garden tips you make my days happy and make me excited to garden on my super tight budget. Wow 25$ fabulous! God Bless your family, stay safe and healthy.
Thank you so much. Your comment absolutely made my day. Please let me know if you make it and how it works for you! Stay safe, healthy and God bless you also!
@@TheShearinHomestead I'm just curious... I know your low tunnels are 5' wide, but how long are they? (I can't find the plastic you used on Lowes so I'm left guessing, lol)
Very nice simple design. Perhaps not the most robust, but quite modular and easy to replace when they start to break down. I particularly like the way they were fastened to the ground. I was thinking of hammering in some rebar and sticking the hoops over it but I like this better. Have you had any experience cutting the 1-in PVC longer so that you could set the hoops up higher? Like if you were going to run a tomato and cucumber line down the middle or something?
I haven’t tried doing it any higher. I did make a cattle panel greenhouse which was basically the same design just not as easy to make and costed quite a bit more. But it was 6’ tall so I could grow more things in there. I used the same plastic just a larger sheet. ;)
This is fantastic! I’ve been winter sowing in milk jugs and that is so time consuming. I’m switching to this!!! Thank you for the very very simple easy to follow tutorial!!
Yay! I’m so happy for you! It’s so much easier than milk jugs! If you get any frost I would recommend a layer of frost cloth over the plants, under the plastic, like a blanket. :) but just cold weather is fine to just have the plastic. Happy growing!!
This is great - it’s the plan I’m going to use! However, I can’t find where I’m the video or transcript where you talked about how long to cut the 1/2” PCV pipe to bend for 5’ wide. Thanks!
Thank you so much. Have done the same on my 4x8 raised bed here in zone 6b (PA) and have had greens for quite awhile. Don't know your growing zone? I do use 6 ml plastic and sometimes I put felt pieces under the binder clips to avoid ripping plastic.
I’m 6b, in southeastern Ky. ;) I usually use 6 mil as well. The felt pieces are such a good idea! My plastic did rip and I had to replace it for this year. I think the felt will be a good addition! Happy growing, friend! Thanks for watching!
Great video!!❤ I'm looking to do something like this, but with netting to keep animals away from my crops. I live in Western Australia, so no frost issues really, plenty of heat, kangaroos, echidnas, and our dogs! Fyi, roos like lettuce. I wish we had US prices and variety, though!! Pvc lengths here cost ~$10 EACH!!!! Our little area is costing a couple of hundred to build, and it will be similar to your $25 build!!! Ouch!!!
Oh man yes the cost of PVC has gone up. :/ I really want to do an updated video on these, it just wasn’t in the plans this year. Maybe next year though. We moved further north so we have FEET of snow instead of inches… it’s a lot to process and plan for. I think the netting is such a good idea to keep pests out! And dogs and cats and even chickens! Good luck and happy growing!! We are about to be in cold weather, I think you’re just coming out of cold into warm right?
Severly inspiring. I want to try this with tomatoes. I'm not sure how much earlier I can plant in Wisconsin, but we had some long, wet cold springs as of late. I am wondering if I can shorten the side pieces to 8 ft, so that the plastic can better meet the soil. I'm trying to figure out how to hold the plastic to the soil, maybe more rocks will do it. Have you tried shorter sides? I can only find sheeting in 10 ft and 20 ft widths.
Yeah you can definitely shorten the sides! I have done them shorter and taller. I’m right by wisconsin. I’m probably going to do mine shorter this year and also put them on top of some raised beds. I’m new to northern gardening so I’m looking forward to learning. Are you zone 4b? More bricks or rocks would help a lot. I added more later in the season when the winds were stronger in the mountains. But that was in Kentucky :)
I already have everything to build, the same way you instructed in your video. Mind you prices have gone up! Your way is a great affordable way to make extending my growing season affordable! All the best 🇨🇦
I have watched several videos on this topic and this is so helpful and practical for the people new to low tunnels. The details are sooo helpful. I wonder how long do your lettuces grow and produce more, and what zone are you in? If you can share any info on when you started the seeds, that is also helpful.. Im wondering if seeds will grow in the fall, in the low tunnel?
Probably goes without saying that you can use a regular pipe cutter that cuts in a circle to cut the pipe. I use one for about 8 rounds then cut it off with the shear tool i had. Could just use one or the other for sure but my grip wasn't too good for justvthe shear.
You mean the type used for a metal pipe? I haven’t ever used one of those but it’s cool to know I could! The pvc cutters are so hard for me to cut the larger sized pipes. Thanks for the advice!! :)
@@TheShearinHomestead yes, the kind used for metal. I had to also use a small pipe wrench to hold the one inch while using the cutting tool. Also i couldn't find any binders at Walmart, evidently sold out, so i ended up at home depot and found 1 inch metal spring clamps, which were 98 cents each. Thanks for making the video. I may make one like yours on tik tok and if i do I'll refference your channel as my source.
How did you prevent squirrels and other rodents from getting under the cover on the sides? I saw you have the rocks on the end, but nothing on the sides.
So I have 2 questions after 3 years how is it holding up and #2 what's your state Soni get a ida of climate I'm in Midwest IL and we are hit or miss for snow and frost?
I actually moved so I only used it for about a year. The frost was ok but snow would load it down. I took the plastic down before any more than an inch of snow :) I haven’t tried it here yet but I’m now in zone 3. I plan to use these inside of my greenhouse for an extra insulated layer.
A couple times in big storms. I’m working on a solution for this season. The problem was the 1/2 pvc came out of the ones in the ground, the plastic was fine. So I’m working on a way to keep the 1/2 hoops from being pulled out.
The plastic lasted 2, yes! The pvc will last pretty much forever lol I just got new plastic but decided not to set them up for the year because we are moving. So I’ll bring everything to the new place :)
This video deserves so many more views. You literally are a life saver!
That is so kind of you to say! Thank you! This is one of my favorite videos and projects ever. Have you made any of the low tunnels? They’re amazing!
I’ve been putting off building a high tunnel for years. This is the year, thanks for the info!
Great job, thanks for the tutorial , happy gardening
Awesome, thanks for the idea! - That will most definitely do the trick for me out here in Zone 8
