- In this video we film an Air Source Heat Pump Installation like you've never seen before...
Come with us behind the scenes to a Hybrid Heat Pump install where we transform the efficiency of this home up to 160% from around 40%.
We met with Allen Hart to take him through the installation process and discuss the many benefits and capabilities of an Alpha Hybrid Heat Pump Boiler System.
The hybrid heat pump offers the efficiency of a heat pump with the reliability of a gas boiler. Watch the video to find out more...

Would be great to see a follow up to see how this fares after a few months, possibly even after one winter to understand cost savings and comfort etc.
We have a few months of data for this install so it would be great to do a follow up, if the customer is happy.
Another Great video Ben, great work guys, its got me excited to see what solution you design for me 👍
Thanks Roger - we're just as excited!
Presume there's EXTRA big savings, what with modern Heat Pumps now having serious, "SCOP" Ratings, coupled with the likes of those super low Night Saver Rates...this Hybrid Heat Pumps set up seems a great solution...
Based off of a trial carried out last year, over one year this system could lead to a saving of 1.2 tonnes of carbon and 0.85p cheaper a day, which is great considering this is a first step into renewables!
What is the maximum flow temperature on the heating?
Can the controller download tariff prices for tariffs which vary on a daily or hourly basis?
The controller currently can only read 3 inputs. 1 is Mon - Fri 8:00 - 19:00. 2 is Mon - Fri 7:00 - 8:00 and 19:00 to 23:00, as well as Saturday from 7:00 to 23:00. 3 is for cheaper hours, Mon - Sat from 23:00 to 7:00 and Sunday 24 hours. This is something that Alpha are looking to implement on the next version.
Why go for a hybrid when replacing all the pipes ?
The customer still wanted the reliability of the gas boiler to ensure that they could still get their property to the desired temperature. If in the future, heat pumps reliability can improve, the pipes are in for them to choose to do this.

Strange to go to all that work, sizing the pipes correctly for the HP then not putting the correct sized radiators in and then run a a gas boiler. The last part of the puzzle would have been correct the radiator size. What’s un reliable about a HP that you have fitted one ? This video is really quite confusing.
@@tomplumb7754 Hi Tom, this is an old property and would require a lot of upgrade work doing, including installing insulation in walls and changing the window glazing etc, before a heat pump should be installed. This would be a lot more work and at a huge cost. These aren't typical radiators that we advise, but this is what the customer wanted. Heat pumps aren't unreliable, but one would be for this property when it hasn't been correctly upgraded. A hybrid heat pump allows the customer to be able to have the boiler kick in when the heat pump can't get the house to temperature.

Hi thanks for the reply.
I can understand that if the property had the fabric sorted then these types of radiators would not cost the Earth to size correctly.
We fit them regularly on gas systems and the cost to size for Hp’s is huge i am finding this myself at home, my wife is asking why we need a second large radiator in the sitting room…
What is the heatloss of the property out of interest?
@@tomplumb7754 I'm interested in knowing the property's Heat Loss too as I am considering this approach for my home.
A hybrid isnt new, the controls noted are decades old, there is nothing new here. The commentary is deceiving, i don't think there is a great deal of knowledge regarding heat pumps and how they operate.
Use of convetor rads isnt a great idea but provides a quick fix. The clients choice of rad in this instance was better.
Manufacturers provide the controls noted as standard so, unclear why its stated as if its new.
4kW Ashp for a property like this is token at best, might as well have just installed the boiler as standalone. Id estimate that the heat pump will rarely run.
Total bullshit
Thanks David, glad you enjoyed the video!
