  • Whangarei Boys High School Board of Trustees has been charged for health and safety failures resulting in a student's death.
In a tragic incident last year, a school board in Northland faces charges following the death of a teenager during a caving excursion. On May 9, 2023, fifteen-year-old Karnin Petera lost his life during a school trip to Abbey Caves when severe weather unexpectedly struck.
WorkSafe New Zealand has now charged the Whangārei Boys' High School Board of Trustees under the Health and Safety at Work Act in connection with this heartbreaking event.
This case could set precedents for the duties and responsibilities of officers and boards in New Zealand. It is important for companies and school boards to stay updated on these cases and review their hazard and risk management frameworks.
