I’m only 6minutes in and you have explained exactly what I’ve wanted to know in order to even buy commercial lights! Can’t wait to see what the rest of the video teaches me! Thanks for the killer video! Will be sweet to offer commercial lights as an option for my business!
Awesome! So sick of all the people who only explain how they hang lights. I know how to hang lights already! I always wanted to know how people put numerous Strings all over the place without the excess lights.. Thank you!
This is the best video I have seen. For years I have been wondering how this was done and what parts to order. I knew it could be possible since I did similar work with exterior path lighting. Best thing is I live 15-minutes from their location and will be going this weekend to buy/order everything... Thanks for the video and you just got my business!!
This video saved me time and money, things you really can waste and never get back. I learned how to get it right and right the first time by watching this video. Thank you.
Wow, this video was GREAT! I was going to spend $$$$ on pre-lit lights, and try to make it work, but after watching you, I cancelled my order and purchased plugs (M/F), 1000' socket wire (6" space), 400 LED bulbs and 150' extension wire! Now I can custom my entire project. One time cost custom to my home! THANKS!
Loved the video. I had most of the things figured out, but you helped me connect the final dots. I had ordered my wire, sockets, plugs, and clips last year, but a bad knee, bad weather, and other things kept me from getting them made. I worked over this past weekend and yesterday, with my son, we got the main line of lights up that I wanted to, after watching your video on Saturday morning. I had tried the channel locks, but kept damaging the sockets when I tried to put them on the cord. I found using a "Irwin" quick-grip bar clamp worked the best for me in snapping the cap on the socket over the wire. I would add, that when we built our last home, I put a 100 AMP panel into my garage, with help from an electrician and then put a timer next to it. I also wired a couple outside boxes up in the soffit back to the timer. So once I got my store bought lights hung, all I had to was trip the breaker back to on, reset the timer on the timer box, and my lights came on for about 90 mins in the morning while it was still dark, and then throughout the evening. Once we got past the holidays, I just went out and tripped the breaker back to off. On the next decent day, I went out and took my lights down. We've moved so I paid an electrician to put the timer box next to the panel and put two outlets in the soffit at opposite ends of the front of the house. So I have the same result. I got this idea from the electrician my brother used when he built his home. Pretty darn nifty. I don't remember how much the timer and the outlets cost this time as I had them do some other work also, but all told I spent about $800 for everything, so the timer and the outlets were only part of that. Keep up the great work on your videos. I/We appreciate it!!
It's that time again and I still make sure every one of my installers watches this before the Christmas season. I'll be stopping by soon, out of Little Elm Tx.
David, thanks for helping us tonight with our plugs. I had no idea about the difference between the SPT-1 and SPT-2 types of cords. Additionally, thanks for offering the insight between the two female plug types.
This is the best instructional video for customizing lights I have seen, thank you! Can you please let us know where to purchase the materials in this video.
The rib side is for identifying the "hot" side of a AC cable not the negative. It's AC wiring not DC wiring. The wide prong is the neutral prong the narrower one is for the hot/live supply.
Very useful thank you but just for clarification the correct terminology is hot and neutral since its AC not DC other than that I haven't seen any other issues
Is there a specific type of wire to use? I was going to get some Southwire 18-2 CU SPT-1 but it's rating is only down to -4° F. Here in the midwest it will definitely get much colder than that.
I have a very important fuse question. First off thank you for the wonderful video. Okay so to get right to it. Those pre-made c7 and c9 stringers already have the fancy little replaceable fuse ends in them. However, if you are creating a truly custom string of lights you would not have those, so, as long as I did not exceed the amperage in the lamp cord itself, is it okay to not have those fancy little replaceable plugins at the end? I don't even know where you buy those things anyway but that's my question. Would appreciate anybody's help on this matter. Thank you in advance.
Thank you, sir! Why don't manufacturers have this kind of content with their products (at least with the reel I bought from Novelty Lights)? Seems like a pretty big thing to know
Nice video here David! Question for you; I have these big bulbs (six total). They came with a remote used to change their colors and pulsate at different intervals, a really cool feature! I want to cut them, extend the big bulbs out further from each other, and hang them from my tree to appear as fruit. Is that possible since the bulbs are not separate from the line? Would cutting the line disable the remote used to change the bulb colors?
I wish I had know about this before!! I have extension cords all over my yard trying to light everything!! I use only led light and could probably link several lights and displays together on one run!! I'm planning on using 12/1 gauge cord. Is that going to be good enough?
David, awesome tutorial on customizing Christmas Lights! By far one of the best ones on UA-cam! Thanks! Arlington is about a little over an hour from me, do you know of a place in North Dallas that sells these supplies?
When i typed on google how to do custom lights it popped up the products to buy. You can probably try amazon so you dont have to go out of your way to look for them.
Thanks for the video. I plan to put up our Christmas lights this weekend. I would love to use custom extension cords, but I think I may run into a problem. I think all of my LED Christmas lights have female plugs with the same slot sizes. The vampire male plugs I've seen have one wide blade. I don't these vampire male plugs would connect to the female plugs from my Christmas lights. Is there a way to connect the two?
Nice helpful video, but I've never heard the 2 wires (or plug blades) in an AC circuit called "positive' and "negative" before. One is neutral and the other is hot or live or line, AFAIK. Positive and negative switch back and forth ("alternate") 60x2 times per second.
Hello David! Near the end of your video, the bottom of the screen peeks at a garland, strung with white lights that are slowly fading/twinkling. What's the technical name for the bulbs so I can search for them. Or, do you know the brand of light string or bulb that these are?
my mind can't figure out how all of this could happen. no exposed metal wires inside of the wires yet you can just clip a female in the middle of a wire just like that. how does that even work???
"Pro"? Positive and Negative are not AC (Alternating Current) terms. It's Hot and Neutral, Black and White Black is Negative (Ground) in DC (Direct Current) electric, and Red is Positive.

Tim Richardson where did you order from? Thanks
Would also like to know where you ordered from!

Jennifer see Eric's reply! It works like crazy!

My mind is literally blown right now. I had no idea this was so easy
This was very concise & useful to me. I'm waiting on a spool set & plugs to do the customized extension cords.
It's that time again and I still make sure every one of my installers watches this before the Christmas season. I'll be stopping by soon, out of Little Elm Tx.

You are welcome! Glad to help! I hope all goes well on lighting up your house!
DW Pro Lights what's the difference, I need to know too lol thanks
Decorator’s Warehouse in Arlington, Texas will have all the supplies you need to customize your Lights.
David Stokes do they ship to VA? Or might you know of a store in VA?
Couldnt easily find lights on the page. Never did find.
I think how you come in into each discussion is funny. Thanks 😊
Can I do this with 3 strand c9
This is the best instructional video for customizing lights I have seen, thank you! Can you please let us know where to purchase the materials in this video.
This is the most helpful video. THANK YOU!!

I’m a little late but next year I’m going to customize how I do lights. Thanks for the great video.
Dude, this changes everything
How many C7 lights can I put on an 8foot custom cord?
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Informative and right to the point. Awesome!!!!
can you link to some of the products mentioned here?
Now this is what I've been looking for!!!
Thanks for the video. What to do my own light this year.. got my business..👍
Easy peasy!! Thank you!!
Very useful thank you but just for clarification the correct terminology is hot and neutral since its AC not DC other than that I haven't seen any other issues

Great video David! Thank you for the help.
Where do you find these? No one here in Maryland even heard of them!!
Great video! Thank you for the info, looks easy enough to do myself!
Where would be a good place to buy c7 sockets ,wire, male and female plugs as I’m wanting to pre light my artificial tree to use bubble lights

Where do you buy these items from tho?
Thanks! A solid 10 out of 10.
Thank You so much for this video, it was hugely helpful! All the best to you and your business!
Can you do the same thing with C5 led lights
Nice video here David! Question for you; I have these big bulbs (six total). They came with a remote used to change their colors and pulsate at different intervals, a really cool feature! I'm pretty sure this would still work as long as the wires are linked up the same (albeit extended).
When you attached the female plug mid-line for your plug for the wreath, can that plug also be used for led mini light strings to outline windows??
Yes you can plug in mini lights as well!
@@davidstokes5057
But u gotta watch your count. Bc u could over load n burn out plug or strand
I wish I had know about this before!! I have extension cords all over my yard trying to light everything!! I use only led light and could probably link several lights and displays together on one run!! I'm planning on using 12/1 gauge cord. Is that going to be good enough?
A DC current cord and plug?

Great video!
100% explained good 👍 👌
Can anyone tell me a good website to buy the materials he is using in this video?
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Where can I get those male and female ends?? I’ve looked everywhere
Can we cut the wire of Christmas lights and do this? Say i have a roll of 100ft for 3 separate rooflines.
Can I do a male plug on one end and another male plug at the other end or does it have to be female and male?
Very helpful man 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Great video David
Great Video
You’re awesome sir!! This was so helpful! Thank you so much!!!!!!
Great job David!
where do i get these
How many inline plugs can you do?
Can you use the method of cutting the excess off of a string of lights with non polarized led lights?
Great video, definitely will be customizing my strands, will my existing C9 strand accommodate LED?
It sould as long as the LEDs you're using are rated for 125V
Where do you purchase the male and female ends?

where can I buy the electrical wire, male and female plugs? How are they called if I buy it in our local hardware or electrical stores?
Lamp wire
Good question!
Did you ever find what you needed? I was looking at a lamp cord spool but it recommends indoor use only and a minimum temp of -4°F.
Hello David! Near the end of your video, the bottom of the screen peeks at a garland, strung with white lights that are slowly fading/twinkling. What's the technical name for the bulbs so I can search for them. Or, do you know the brand of light string or bulb that these are?
Thank you so much for this!!! I will be using this your year 🙌🏽😊 Wish me luck 🤣
Can you cut the C9 LED One piece bulb/socket design as well?
Did you find the answer?
Most lights now don't matter which way you put it. They will work both ways
Very helpful video. Thumbs up!! But I have to laugh did you use one of the first cell phones to record the video lol. It was really blurry.
THANK YOU!!
Here's the million dollar question. Why doesn't someone just sell these cords and make life easier?
Can you buy wire so I can make custom lights for my Christmas village?
Yes, you can!
Yes, you can!
Yes, you can!
Can you add an “in line male plug” instead of a female
It would be extremely dangerous to do that. You would potentially have hot exposed prongs.
my mind can't figure out how all of this could happen. no exposed metal wires inside of the wires yet you can just clip a female in the middle of a wire just like that. how does that even work???
"Pro"?
Positive and Negative are not AC (Alternating Current) terms.

Black is Negative (Ground) in DC (Direct Current) electric, and Red is Positive.
28 people are in the Christmas light hanging business,
Now he needs to watch a video of how to keep yourself in focus when doing a video :-)
What a jerk you are!!!!
How can anyone take you seriously when you don't know that that is AC power and there's not a positive or negative leg so that circuit
Where can you purchase the cords and plugs?
