Why dont families do a thorough background check on any staff hired in their house? And the parents look more like grandparents with such young children

So the baby Maddie carries is Jonathans? I really like the end of this movie. I didn,t expect Wendy gave Maddie such an unconditional love that stopped Maddie from killing them at the end.
