    I read the books, “Cruise Confidential” - which is by an American who worked in the dining rooms, he talks about cramped cabins & working up to 18 hrs a day & said he was one of the VERY FEW Americans willing to do that job. The other was “The Truth about Cruise Ships” written by a guy who worked in IT- he had a MUCH cushier job than the other guy-- didn’t really have a schedule a lot of times but was on call but usually didn’t work more than 8 hrs a day & spent a lot of time drinking in the crew bar & having sex!! Both very informative!!!! The crew officers which the IT guy was are allowed into a different crew mess & he said they had waiters & didn’t have to clean their dishes. They also got more time to eat.

    Another great video guys! Some interesting information to add to the crew quarters and guests not being able to enter into this area...I used to date a crew member that worked for NCL (yay!) and when I went on vacation (having my own cabin) to visit him, it was required for me and the crew member to sign an agreement in order for the him to enter my cabin. The crazy thing was that the form had to be signed off by the Captain (and a copy carried around by both of us). I thought the HD would be sufficient enough, but it is amazing how strict they are (which is a good thing) that it has to be escalated to the Captain.
    One thing I am so happy that y'all covered was praising the members as well. Every time I cruise, it breaks my heart to see people complain about the most trivial things and knowing that the staff work day and night to please the guests infuriates me (I watched the NCL Valentine's Day video last night and if I was sitting next to that lady, i don't think I could have restrained myself from letting her have it). Thanks again though for great info and Happy Thanksgiving!

    I'm going on my first cruise ever in May 2020 on NCL Breakaway. Of the three of us going, two will be using travel scooters, and our room is not an accessible cabin because we are both able to stand and walk short distances and didn't want to take an accessible cabin that could benefit someone else that really needs the accommodation. Our room steward will be treated like GOLD for having to work around two little old ladies and my 20-year old son on their first cruise. We're all fun-loving people who never meet a stranger and hope we can spread the smiles and happiness out to others. Happy Cruising! ❤💛💚💙💜

      That's awesome that you're going on a cruise. If you don't have a handicap accessible cabin...where will you put your scooters ?? You can't leave them in the hallways.....and we don't believe they'll even fit through the door.

      @@Cruisingwithwheels Travel scooters have smaller bases and collapse small enough to maybe fit under the bed, in the closet, or in a corner out of the way. We're renting them and the company said people in regular cabins use them a lot, so hoping they'll work for us! ☺ I'm going to try to include a link to the site: www.scootaround.com/mobility-rentals/cruise/scooter-rentals

    No days off , pay is poor , husband work lido, during dinner in kitchen, midnite buffet. In his cabin him and other guy. My husband contract was a year. And the cruise line, set up for them to send money to their families. A crew member works very hard . This was on HAL SS Rotterdam 1993 -1994.

    We go beyond THANK YOU. We were on a NCL CRUISE up in the villas. We had out electricity go out in our room overnight. long store short. We called the cabin steward. Told him what happened. He got the electrician. I know by the look on his face we were gong to throw a fit. My husband and I told him. If this is the worst thing that happens. We will be happy. We made sure he understood it was not his fault it was just a hickup. You got it fixed. He was wonderful to us. We invited him to the room the day before we docked on the last sea day. I had him bring 3 glasses of milk and I got chocolate chip cookies. I was talking to him off and on. found out he was going home after we docked. I got his 2 little girls and his wife a necklace and earrings with their birthstone in them. Plus my husband gave him $200.00 cash for him to take home.

    Thank you for doing this video. I just got off the Jade and was so impressed with the level of kindness and professionalism I saw in the staff. I wondered if there are items that the crew would appreciate in addition to the cash tips. Maybe little snacks or things like lotions?

    I have a comment I'd like to add about tipping. I honestly believe that the $13-15 per day gratuity is pretty darn reasonable. Consider when one goes on a land based vacation. Personally, I always leave $3-5 per day for housekeeping, then my meals throughout the day will be at least several dollars. Drinks around the pool or at the bar will get a minimum of $1 per drink. Tips for the cab drivers, the valet and of course the porters that handle your luggage. Those tips alone will surely be in excess of $25+! So, that $13 dollars or so per day is actually quite a steal. It amazes me that people think they should be removed.
    Keep up the great work you two! Love watching you guys! And Happy Thanksgiving to you.

    Coming from a country where tipping is not standard, we always try to prepay our gratuities, and always try to make sure we do a feedback card about every crew member who has gone above and beyond. Our next cruise is a transatlantic in November 2020 and we’ve been wondering about additional tipping. Sounds like the numbers we were considering are about right - phew!
    Also, I am horrified at the state in which some people leave their cabins! I have a cleaner come in once a fortnight to do the basics (vacuuming, bathrooms etc). I don’t pay her to clean up after me, and I try to be the same for a cabin steward - ain’t nobody got time for that!

    A thank you and a talk with a supervisor goes a long way. This happened On our trip last year there as was a couple sitting behind us who came in with an attitude gave our waiter such a hard time. Everything he did was not good enough for them. When this couple left and they had complained to his supervisor. when they left we called the waiter and supervisor over to our table and told both of them it was not his fault he did nothing wrong and that we appreciate the time he took with us to make us feel important and that he had no reason to feel bad because they had an attitude from the start. We even had two other couples say the same thing to the supervisor. I could see in the waiters eyes that he was thankful we had said something. Please remember these are people with feelings as well don't come to dinner with an attitude you not only are upsetting the waiter but you are upsetting the other people.
    Thanks Kevin and Frank for your tips.

I have known people to put together little gift bags of money, laundry soap and some snacks. They do work hard and should be rewarded and recognized. I also did not know they had comment cards to leave a good comment. It is easy to complain and not recognize the good people. Thank you again!!!!

    On my first cruise back in 2015, I had a double ear infection. I was basically bedridden the whole trip unless it was in the evening. My steward named Sylvanna was so sweet to me. Always came and checked up on me, made sure i was taking my medicine, eating something, pretty much acting like a mom figure to me. I loved her so much. By the time the cruise was done, I had felt soooo much better. She made me feel special and taken care of. I gave her a tip and a big bear hug. I hope she is doing well and that I see her on my upcoming Carnival Vista cruise.

    A friend who's a travel agent, and has cruised quite a bit, advised me to start taking non-drowsy Drammine 2 days before a cruise, and keep taking 2 days after - this allows it to build up in your body before you sail, and also allows you to "get your land legs back" when you get off. Take it at the same time every day (preferably at bed time, just in case you do have a drowsiness issue). I did this, and never had a sea sickness issue, despite chasing the tail end of a hurricane on a NE/Canada cruise. Of course, it doesn't sound as bad as you seem to have had it.
    I have a LOT of respect for all the crew members go through,and give up, to serve us. I have a LOT of respect for all service industry employees, even in my every day life. Having been in public service for most of my life (almost 30 years just in one of those jobs!), I KNOW how tough it is to deal with people - especially if they have a few drinks in them! I treat them like people, NOT my servants, and try to get to talk to them/know them on a personal level, and show my appreciation. Just like here in my apartment complex - the gentleman who vacuums the hallways and cleans the laundry rooms just came past my apartment - I always thank them, and give them a cold bottle of water. Just like I'd want somebody to do for me! The room and uniform inspections remind me of my time in the Navy! :) I agree that some people act like total slobs when they're out and about, and especially on vacation. I look at them and think "How the HECK do you act at HOME, and what does your home LOOK like? And if you don'd do that at home, why are you doing it HERE?". I also go out of my way (even at home) to compliment those that do a good job, no mater that hat job is - I will compliment them not only to their face, but also to a manager or boss, so it means something. I have a saying "There are 1,000 people in your day that will tell you when yo do a crappy job, let me be the ONE that tells you you've done a good one!". Just like I always try to tell you gentlemen. You're right - I get some amazed looks, but it always feels great! :) And yes - I will also give additional cash tips (on top of prepaid gratuities, which I will OT begrudge anyone!) if I feel it is warranted.
    Hope you both had a happy, HEALTHY, and bountiful Thanksgiving. I give thanks for having round you, and all the info and smiles you give me. Thank you for who you are, and what you do! HUGS!!

    I have heard that the cruise line uses tips to suppliment their wage rather than give it as extra which is why i object to forced gratuity. We do not tip in nz however i always leave something on the bed for when i stay at a hotel and when people are friendly. I wouldnt mind 13 or 15 a day which in nzd is 30 dollars if the people who actually involved in my stay got it. I never go to a bar for example so wouldnt tip bar staff alsothe head waiter i heard gets more than the wait staff for just going around tables asking are you enjoying your meal. I have also read that their wages are low as their meals and accommodation are all free so they have no living expenses. I understand from your video that they support family however here where i live even on minimum wage supporting family you still have to pay for food and rent. There are people i have known who work in caregiving and even though their work is live in they still pay rent and for their meals.

    Applying a living wage to cruise ship workers is a fascinating topic. A living wage is the income necessary for a worker to meet their basic needs (food, housing, clothing, transportation, etc.) in the country where they live. If a cruise ship company paid a living wage to its employees, based upon their country of origin, many of the employees would have their wages significantly reduced. For example, a living wage for an employee from an African country would be significantly less than a living wage for an employee from the US. A cruise ship company might be able to reduce their payroll by implementing a living wage salary based upon each employee's country of origin. Creating this type of wage disparity would create jealousy among employees that would lead to a disintegration of employee morale and a very unhappy environment for everybody on the ship :-(

    I got off the NCL Epic on Saturday, what an amazing T/A cruise! The only problem I encountered was the extreme rudeness of some other guests. On one occasion I took a leaf out of Kevin's book and had a real go at an awful woman who was incredibly rude to both myself and a bartender. Basically I used my best British accent, told her what I thought of her, stuck my nose in the air and walked off, tossing over my shoulder that if she tried that in Britiain she would never get served at all... what a bitch!

    My heart goes out to those crew members. I have some idea what they're going through. It's been fifty years since I got out of the military. I'm retired now, and somewhat disabled due to my service to my country. When I felt it was time for me to quit living alone, I moved into the Veterans Home in Chula Vista CA, I was assigned a room in the "independent" living quarters. I soon found out that it was a bit like being back on active duty without all the marching and saluting. Check this out and see if this sounds anything like "independent" living. I had only a bedroom that I shared with another woman. The two of us shared a shower and a toilet with the two other women in the adjoining room. That means that four of us shared a toilet and a shower. I did have the "luxury" of sharing a sink with just my roommate. There was a total of about forty-eight residents in my building, all males, except the five of us females. The entire building of forty-eight shared a community kitchen. We were not allowed to have our own microwave in our room. We had monthly room inspections. The staff would walk into our bedroom or bathroom anytime they pleased, without so much as a courtesy knock, before they just walked in. We were required to sign in every day. The furniture was the property of the State of California, so since there was very little storage space, I had to give up most of my things. Out in the community a woman asked me about the "cute little apartment" she thought we had. Nope. So, when you hear another blowhard politician claiming they provide "only the best for our vets", please remember this.

    Great video! When I worked for RCI back in 2006-8, our uniforms were discounted from our first paycheck. There was a little shop for crew members where we could buy drinks/ snacks, toiletries, and you could bring back those snacks / drinks to your cabin. However people got written off for bringing back to their cabin yogurt ( taken from the crew mess) ...I was a Youth Staff, it was a nice(r) position sort of...but yes crew members do work hard for long long hours. Re Crew Members. My father was a first-class speciality chef. When I was young he came home once every 3 months, approx. In my teen years he moved to the SS United States and was home every 2 months, approx. I never heard any complaints, however he did have problems sleeping when he was home. I think he must have been treated quite differently than today's crew members. Makes me wonder how crew members can be so pleasant. Although I understand how 'bubbles' are created, I'm truly sorry, but I listen to my gut and my gut tells me to tip good every time it's deserved. Beautiful days, always, especially to crew members.

    Great vlog !! I always find it very enjoyable talking with the employees on our cruises...and oh my goodness, from what I have seen they all work very, very hard. I am always amazed at how many cabins the attendants are responsible for, and how many hours the restaurant staff work. And, I know that the other employees work just as hard and as many hours, too. I always think about how it must be for them to finish a cruise, just to turn around and start all over again until their contracts are up. So, for me, I feel good when I hand the extra tip to my room attendant, and when I tip extra for services. Makes me feel good, and their faces show how much they appreciate it.

    Another great video guys! I always make time to communicate and get to know any cruise ship personnel I come across. Many years ago I got to know a husband and wife that worked together on the same ship at the the same time. At first that would sound good. However they had a very young child that was being cared for by their family members at home. Always remember that there are many with difficulties and struggles far greater then ours. $13 a day tip x 7 days is $91 per person a lot of times that's less then 15 to 20 percent(normal tipping range) of the cost of your cruise. I always pay the deducted tip and give extra to my cabin steward, wait staff and bartenders. Happy Thanksgiving guys and remember to "Travel safe and TIP often."

    I've wondered i give the tip that is included in my fare (ncl) which i increase. Would the cabin steward prefer the extra tip of cash i leave or gift cards to say amazon.. walmart.. cash is great but amazon can ship almost anywhere. Even to home country.

    I’ve seen videos featuring crew cabins..,and they are TINY, people. Really small. And i’ve heard crew members talk about their working conditions... These people really work hard.., SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, for weeks on end. I could not do what they do..
    The best advice was to treat crew members as you woukd want to be treated...AND.. to remember that crew members...cabin stewards in particular...are not your personal slaves...and should be treated with respect.

    I agree with everything you guys said. I never met a rude or lazy employee on a ship, and we cruise often. In fact the last cruise we took on the NCL Getaway, it was very hard to choose the one employee that we felt was worth recognition on the comment card. We had three that we felt were just great.

    • @Cruisingwithwheels
      @Cruisingwithwheels  5 років тому +2

      It depends on your budget as well as your length of the cruise and the performance of the steward. For us, typically we give them $25 at the beginning of the cruise and another $25 at the end if we feel they have performed as expected!!

    Hey I'm late on watching the video bit great video. Question I'll be honest I'll tip my waiters extra everytime they get me a drink and I tip the porters with my luggage but I've never tipped my cabin steward I always thought my prepaid tips covered them but my question one- who all would you say I should tip? And two like for the cabin steward should I give them the tip in person or leave them in the room wirh a note. Oh one more question with giving praise I normally cruise carnival so should I find an officer or do you know if they have a form I can fill out? Thank you so much and keep up with the great videos

    • @Cruisingwithwheels

      The pre-paid gratuities you pay for your cruise are all divided up amongst all of them. You can give extra tips of cash to whomever you feel is giving you the absolute best service....above & beyond. And most cruise lines have their version of a " Hero Card " to fill out and hand in to guest services. We personally hand a thank you note w/ $25.00 directly to the cabin steward on the 1st day. We go over our specific wants and requirements and thank him ahead of time for taking care of us. If he does.....he gets the other $25.00 on the last day.

    • @Cruisingwithwheels

      Yes...that's what NCL calls their compliment card. Then there is a drop box as well at guest services.

I,m not getting a handicap state room but it folds up to fit threw the door way of a regular room thanks for any ideas this will be my first cruise going solo I lost my husband last year so I,m on my own and its a little scary I want my first time to have as little stress as possible . Thanks Wendella

      No you don't need a note. You should, however, reach out to the special needs department. They will need to note that you are bringing an assistive device. This will ensure the assistance of the special needs department aboard in the case of an emergency.

    First I don't mind tipping the crew works hard as heck and deserve every bit of money and more, but it is a scam. What is a tip? Something you get extra right. Not sure how it is where you live, but here in Virgina the minimum wage is what 7.35 or something but if your a waitress is 2.50 why because the restaurant considers your tip part of your wage. It's probably the same with the ships a they short change the crew on regular pay and use the tips as part of the wage am I wrong maybe. I want the crew to get a fair wage and then hay here's a tip for hard work and a great job.

    • @Cruisingwithwheels
      @Cruisingwithwheels  5 років тому +2

      Totally agree ! Everyone should make a living wage and their tips SHOULD be extra !

    • @Desjardins50
      @Desjardins50 5 років тому +2

      I’m a former restaurant owner. In my area minimum wage is $14 for Everyone. Our servers are not paid less. Minimum wage is bare bones living. Tips are rewards for good service, not a punishment if the food is not to your liking etc. or if your table is not in the right area with the perfect view etc. We had successful wait staff who stayed with us for years and received great tips.
      It’s up to the owners to bring on incentives to keep their teams. However, on a cruise ship, this is the best system to ensure a balance of satisfaction and pride in that crew as a whole. The amount of screaming, disrespectful, patrons on cruise ships is so noticeable, it would be detrimental if gratuities were not imposed. Because of the size of cruise ships, and nature of the work involved it’s the best system.
      By the way Cruising with Wheels , love your blog. This is one of your best topics.
