I adore the Celestial patron for the Warlock. In the past few years, I became aware of a creature in Armenian mythology called the Aralez, which is described as a Celestial canine with resurrection abilities. To my knowledge, the Aralez has yet to make an appearance in D&D, and it being there can provide some lore for the inspiration for Resurrection spells, and give a potential new Celestial connection for a Warlock.
A possible tactic for high level Great Old One Warlocks: Cast Hex on your target, debuffing their Intelligence. Since Hex is an Enchantment spell, you cast it without verbal or somatic components. Next round, cast Feeblemind on the target using your 8th level Mystic Arcanum. Since the target has their Intelligence Hexed, they get disadvantage on the saving throw due to Eldritch Hex. And since Feeblemind is also an Enchantment spell, you also cast it without verbal or somatic components. It's an almost completely undetectable way to potentially melt someone's brain.
@@yzfool6639 "Most" 5e campaigns? Not my 5e campaigns. Not the ones I DM or play in. It's D&D. You can do whatever you want so long as it isn't god-modding or ruining the fun for other people.
Venomous snake was better then an Owl??? at what table did he play? I NEVER saw a player use a venomous snake, they all get the owl for the fly by attack in order to grant help on someone else attack
If they stuck with the UA changes, then Warlocks automatically get patron spells. Even if it's already on the normal list, having it as a patron spell would mean not having to use a learn slot for it.
Appreciate how they sorta acknowledged Eldritch Blast was used too much. Now that you can customize other cantrips and all that this could be alleviated. My main issue with the Warlock was how the way to play it without cirppling yourself recquired you to build into Eldritch Blast a lot. What's the point of a highly customizable class when there's incentive to only do one thing? Like yeah there will always be min/max ways of playing a class but Eldritch Blast was just too good to the point everything you'd get would go towards upgrading it further.
Problem is, it still remains the superior choice due to each of the rays adding the charisma modifier. No other cantrip has that feature so EB scales much better
@@haerdalis84You have to understand that Eldritch Blast doesn't add the charisma modifier normally, but an Invocation does, and that invocation can be used on any cantrip now.
@@elegantmonkey6111 A reasonable point, but misses haedalis's point that it applies to every beam for EB, while all other cantrips are single attacks. At level 11, Fire Bolt's 3d10 becomes 3d10+5, while Eldritch Blast is 3 x (1d10+5), for 21.5 vs 31.5 average damage (not counting accuracy, but that will scale both the same). So it still scales at +CHA damage per cantrip upgrade after the first tier.
@@gaelofariandel6747 it’s not called a “variant” anymore, but now baseline humans do still get an origin feat, in addition to the one that everyone starts with at level 1. At least, that’s how it worked in the UA. They didn’t clarify this in the UA-cam video, so we’ll have to wait for the book release to see if they kept that or not
I really wish they would too but I’m pretty sure it got poor feedback which is really odd to me. Tbh, the flavor text of a warlock about being seekers of eldritch knowledge says intelligence faster to me but 🤷♂️
Wait.... if agonizing and repelling blast affect any cantrip: Pact of the Blade Booming Blade Agonizing Blast Repelling Blast Pact Greatsword 17 CHA Cast Hex, then Booming Blade, 2d6 + 3, +3 AGAIN for Agonizing, a d6 for hex, and pushes the enemy back. Enemy's turn, they have to run towards you to attack, that's a d8 +3 for booming blade and agonizing, a d6 for hex. So 4d6 + 1d8 + 9 damage at level 2. Or only +6 if the agonizing doesn't hit twice for booming blade's 2 different damages. Next two levels, take Paladin for smite, add 2d8, and use feat to go to 18 CHA for a total of: 4d6 + 3d8 + 12. With numbers like that, who needs extra attack?
Celestial Warlock can add Cha to fire damage spells at level 6, so Agonizing Green-Flame Pack of the Blade will do 2d6+1d8+3+3 to the first target can 1d8+3 to the second, though if you increase Charisma you can bump that up to +4 on all of those numbers. Eventually you're getting Lifedrinker for +4 more damage, and if you get a magic weapon you're going to be increasing your damage even more. All without a spell slot, but you can always Hex and Smite if you prefer.
Incorrect. Hex and agonizing blast will not apply to damage not associated with an attack roll, and Paladin smite is now a bonus action and a spell, so it will not work with this. edit: Now I see the change to the agonizing blast text, but it doesn't change much. Booming blade does normal weapon damage then the spell damage if the creature moves, so the agonizing blast damage would only count toward the specific spell damage. ( eg. On a hit, the target suffers the weapon attack’s normal effects) So the Damage is 2d6+3 on a successful hit, 1d6 from hex , then 1d8+3 if the creature moves. So its, 3d6+1d8+6 (22) and at level 2 that's still very good After 5th level then the additional 1d8 thunder damage would be affected by agonizing blast.
My favourite class just keeps getting better 😍 Glad pact boon is getting rolled into evocations so we can choose multiple options; it's always pained me to choose only one.
I honestly really like the concept of warlock getting their subclass later than they used to. Levels 1-2 can be explained as your character studying occult, otherworldly lore and power in general until you finally choose or get noticed by your patron later on. But I’m not gonna lie, Jeremy’s wrong about the venomous snake being the mechanically best familiar. The owl is infinitely better.
It's only better if you're playing a Warlock. The owl can just fly over people, so flyby is basically worthless unless youre in a small room, and since Find Familiar familiars cant attack unless youre playing a Chain Pact warlock, why are you even bringing your familiar into combat to begin with? In a broader game sense, Poisonous Snake is better because you can harvest it's venom basically indefinitely and for free, letting you buff your allies weapons
@@redhoodie4111 because of the help action, granting advantage to people without risking opportunity attacks, it is infinitely better than the snake. edit: and flying to scout ahead and what not outside of combat as well.
I actually had the similar explanation about 1-2 levels, until I heard that you get you pact boon at lvl 1, that I do not know how explain so it could look believable. Ability to materialise almost any kind of weapon and being proficent with it or being able to summon a familiar that any legendary wizard could just dream of, at the very start of your warlock way, being acolyte or whatever, and this is without a patron? Looks kinda ridiculous
@@axus4489 the way I see it wizards are jedi, they get incredible power but they have to work harder and longer for it whereas warlocks are the Sith, they get their incredible power much quicker but it comes with the cost of losing yourself to another force.
They talked a bit about pact of the chain and pact of the blade, but not much about pact of the tome. I really hope they do it justice. It’s lagged behind the others for a while and I hope that’s no longer the case in the full release. They mentioned briefly that it has invocations that build on it, but I really hope they aren’t just talking about the out-of-combat effects like casting sending or not having to sleep.
Yeah. Pact of the Tome was generally considered the strongest of the three pacts in 2014, so it got a lot less love in Xanathar's and Tasha's, to the point where it's become the least powerful.
if it stays unchanged from the beta its was essentially a warlock version of the artificers All Purpose Tool, 3 cantrips and 2 1st level rituals from any spell list you could change on a short/long rest. Guessing there gonna rein it in some before release wich is why they prob didn't talk to much about it.
I would have been happy even if it was just Int or Cha (mostly because those are the options that made the most sense to me and thus the ones I would use most)
I wasn't a fan of that. The Classes were based largely on how your spellcaster came about their power. It was the perfect unison of mechanics meets theme.
Can't wait until tomorrow to see the final product. While I liked the direction taken with the Playtest 7 Warlock I honestly think it needed another round. Hopefully they did it justice. For starters, EB shouldn't be easy to steal.
@@treepelta113 That is what Playtest 5 had i believe but they reverted it for some reason. Which is weird because now you can steal EB and AB with one level, before you at least had to invest 2 levels to get AB.
im excited for the new books, seems like they added more crunch that was needed. Also the way JC explains the changes you cn tell he cares a lot about player experience.
If you want warlocks to do a default action other than Eldritch blast, just allowing them to use their invocations with any other Cantrip is not enough. At 11th level who is going to choose Ray of frost or chill touch for 2d8 + 5 (agonising blast Cha 20) + extra cantrip feature over EB for 3d10 +15. OK it might occasionally happen but not a lot, and not enough for the warlock not to continually spam EB. I think that one possibility is that each Pact has a specific cantrip linked to their Patron (Firebolt for Fiend , Mind Sliver for GOO) etc. that works as EG does with multiple attacks (at 5th, 11th, 17th) rather than increased damage, allowing the stacking of Agonising blast damage and other invocation effects.. Something like this was done for D&D Online and it works well. Alternatively a new feat (or possibly Warlock invocation) called Cantrip master: 'Taking this feat gives a bonus to Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma. Secondly at higher levels when you cast a cantrip which requires either a ranged or a melee spell attack role you may change the increased damage dice gained at 5th, 11th and 17th level into multiple attacks doing one dice of damage. Two separate 1 dice damage attacks at 5th level, 3 at 11th level and 4 at 20th level. Each attack may be made at any creature within range, with a separate attack role for each spell attack. Where the attack has a secondary effect e.g. Ray of frost reduces speed by 10 feet until the start of your next turn, this is applied to only the first hit with the spell not all targets. The aim would be mainly to get Warlocks to use something other than Eldritch blast and give a little boost to a Draconic Sorcerers damage. But also to provide a bit more utility to cantrips. A similar feat might also be for Cantrips that do damage if the targets fails a saving throw.
I guess my question regarding lore with a warlock is: If you're not deciding the subclass until level 3, but you're getting eldrich invocations/boons right from level 1, how exactly does this work, lore wise? Thematically, would you already be aware of "what" your patron is/where your power is coming from? For example, do I already know from level 1 i'm getting powers from a fae patron, but i'm not like officially serving them until level 3? I guess i'm a little confused on the thematic of the subclass choice/when it happens. (sorry if this is a dumb question. I guess I kinda just dont understand where the power comes from from level 1-2 now)
You study and draw your power from general occult teachings starting at level 1, and a patron of specific occult abilities only notices you personally starting at level 3, and decides to grant you a portion of their own power in exchange for something. For example you could study the psychic disturbances of eldritch unknowings for two levels, and then as you reach your third warlock level a specific patron of eldritch unknowings (a Great Old One patron) finally notices you studying them, as you are otherwise completely insignificant to them.
I interpreted it as you reach out for power or knowledge and an entity answers but doesn't take you seriously until you have done some things. Like a Free Trial before the Subscription fee.
The patron gives you generic warlock powers at levels 1-2. At level 3, you start getting patron-specific abilities. :) (The same argument has always applied to paladin oaths. You don't narratively just start swearing an oath and getting magic powers from that at level 3; you just get abilities of that particular flavor at that level, but narratively, you've always gotten those abilities from your convictions.)
I think Warlock might be the class I’m most excited for! These changes are all (mostly) pretty freaking awesome. I might have missed it, but did anyone catch in what ways that level two feature restores spell slots? I just heard them say that it does.
It only gives you half your spell slots once a day. So the vast majority of play you will only get a single additional spell slot per day. you are still limited in the amount of spell slots you can enter an encounter with.
@@corvusnull5204 yeah i feel like to make this feature better, the Warlock should shift from 4 at cap to 6, that way this feature becomes more relevant earlier. Its nice to get a spell slot back but doesn't feel as impactful as it should be.
I've had the idea to make a celestial pact warlock with pact of the blade for a while. Seems it will be much easier to do with this edition. Thank you for working on them. X.
That spell is already OP enough as is haha. It’s fine as an action. Making it a bonus action would make it better than most other spells of that level, almost mimicking foresight (a 9th level spell) for combat purposes.
I see it now with the fey warlock's level 14 feature. you take misty visions for unlimited silent image and then create an illusion of yourself where you stand, and then misty step to another location for free and the enemy either doesnt know where you actually are or there are two of you and they dont know which is real
Skilled is fantastic, especially on Rogues now. Getting Reliable Talent at 7 means that I will likely take Skilled on every rogue I play, except maybe Assassins where I’ll go Alert
@@michaeldejean3742 But Skilled isn't even on the level of Lucky. In an adventuring day you might get equally as many uses out of Skilled as Lucky, but Lucky is so much more flexible and can be used in similar scenarios to Skilled to yield a similar result. An extra D20 to use is roughly equivalent to a +4 increase, and this isn't taking into account that Lucky turns disadvantage into super advantage. A feat you use often at great benefit will always be better than a feat you use sometimes for a minor benefit.
There's a reason Lucky gets banned. If it was an origin feat... that would often be considered the best. Origin feats being "mid" feats seems right, to me at least.
It's cause they nerfed lucky it just lets you give yourself advantage or an enemy disadvantage instead so it doesn't grant super advantage or completely ignore disadvantage anymore
As someone who loves playing (and especially role-playing) Warlock, I'm beyond excited by pretty much all these changes. It looks so incredibly fun! Character-builder's paradise indeed.
I’m not even 7 minutes into this 30 minute video and yet I already know the warlock character I’ve been making in preparation for the new handbook is going to be my favorite/best because of these new changes!
They could have added in pact of the talisman, just increase the dice, or let it increase at certain levels. Like other classes abilities. It could also be an invocation that increases it
either you don't know specifically who your patron is until level 3 OR, more likely, that's when your patron starts giving you some of their specific magic.
The patron gives you generic warlock powers at levels 1-2. At level 3, you start getting patron-specific abilities. :) (The same argument has always applied to paladin oaths. It doesn't make sense *to you* because you probably didn't take the time to read and understand the warlock entry in the PHB. Their magic doesn't come from a patron, it comes from their generalized research of magic. They cut a deal with a patron to get specific power.
It doesn't make sense to standardize all subclasses coming online at level 3 if the rest of their subclass abilities are NOT standardized. I of course, point to the poor rogue, who STILL has to wait until level 9 for their second subclass ability. If you're going to standardize subclasses at level 3, then standardize the rest of their abilities across the board too. Just doing it at one level doesn't make any sense. Something like 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, would be great, because they would hit every four levels, similar to how asi increases work.
At one point in the playtests it was 3, 6, 10 and 14 for everyone, which would have been great for the rogue and nice for multiclassing That didn't survive even until the next playtest and I don't know why
I think level 2, 6, 10, 14 and 18 would be great for subclasses. Evenly spread out and happens on even levels, odd levels already have spell slot level increases so those are already very powerful for some classes.
@@shadow-faye I suspect that the uniform subclass level progression tested poorly because (a) people hated Warlock/Cleric/Sorcerer subclasses being moved off of level one, (b) people were afraid that it would make it too difficult to convert older subclasses, and (c) it meant that certain capstone abilities had to be nerfed or deleted.
The difficulty with that be that rogue and fighter get additional ASIs/feats compared to other classes. So that could conflict with the “schedule” of subclass ability an acquisition.
So looks like they may be going the same route as Baldurs Gate 3 where Pact of the blade gives you charisma melee attacks. And if that’s the case then very happy! I’d love to be a melee fiend warlock. So tanky!
It does, that was their intention behind moving it to level 1 and making it an invocation option. The playtest version gave you Charisma Attacks at level 1 and I believe you still got to choose a weapon without the heavy property as your pact weapon and get proficiency with it. I believe you can get the improvement at level 5 for extra attack and level 11 for 2 extra attacks.
I appreciate that they moved pact of the blade into invocations at level 1 so you can still do 1 level dips for charisma attacks. It's also a little frustrating that Charisma characters have pretty easy access to it when you have to take specific spells or subclasses with Intelligence and Wisdom casters to get spellcasting modifier melee attacks. Can't express how annoying having to take Shillelagh to get the same effect as just a 1 level dip getting you a bunch of bonuses. I feel like Cleric and Druid's new level 1 feature that gives them armor and weapons should do this at like level 5 maximum.
Don't know if I like the subclass coming up from level 1, for the same reason I don't like it with sorcerer: where you get your powers from feels very intrinsic to those classes, you're not really walking around for 2.9 levels as a warlock before learning where you're getting those powers from
I'm kind of sad that there is no Hexblade subclass (from XGE) in the new PHB 2024 but kind of understand cause the base for a warlocks is to be casters but i'm also curious if they will bring Hexblade back or if there is an option in the Invocations/Feats and i'm in general happy for the warlock changes.
As insane as a lot of the Invocations they mentioned are - minor disclaimer that not everything they mentioned will necessarily be available at Level 1, they didn't bring up any of the individual prerequisites here.
While the US site for the pre-orders work, the partner site for those outside of the US (such as Canada) is having problems. I was able to get to the point of purchasing the PHB/DMG/MM bundle, but Canadian, that's a no-go. Individual bundles (one for each book, for the physical and digital versions) are apparently available, but not really. For the 'Partner Site' for those outside the US, it would only go so far as authenticating the account, it would then have an arrow to go back to the site, but it would not go further than that.

3rd Level Subcalsses: Lvl 2 Warlock- I made a Faustina bargain with an eldritch entity far beyond human comprehension so increase my own power Ranger- Oh really, which one? Lvl 2 Warlock- Idk
Love these changes. BUT. I guess I understand why they did it, but subclass at level 3 for Warlock (and Sorcerer, by the way) makes NO sense. The patron is the source of their power and agreeing a pact with them is a life event. What's the rationale for them having powers at level 1? Does the DM need to bake in an encounter with a patron of the player's choice late level 2 now? That could be fun, but could be onerous. Maybe I'm missing something, but I just feel they got way too rigid about this across the board level 3 subclass.
As a DM I had to do an patron enconter for one of my players who wanted dip pally and then go warlock. It sucked a lot because i had to fit the patron and his interest into the lore and the player chose a pact that wasn’t fit into my story. Starting the pact at level one is so much better.
The Pact Boon is your first token from the Patron, it might be a book that promises endless knowledge, a weapon that grants you great skill or a little creature that whispers in your ear, its the bait on the hook, once you've proven yourself the Patron comes forward and reveals themself granting more power
You can kinda read it like this: Level 3 is when you're officially on the job and hired by your patron. Before Level 3? You're getting job training. So you still get warlock stuff cause you're getting job training but it's not like you're full on the field yet.
Can someone help me understand what WotC's obsession with Fae and teleportation? Fae (in mythology) are all about tricking people, misleading them, giving things to or taking things from people, etc. I get that being able to teleport should absolutely be a tool in a fae, but I feel like they really focused too much on it. Let fae warlock trick people more, get people into contracts, have advantage on convincing people or enchanting them, casting illusions easily, things like that. Not JUST teleport around, popping up like Whack-a-mole.
Yeah, I don't get it either. I like the addition of more teleportation, but glamour (illusion) and trickery is core to fey, and the teleportation shouldn't come at the cost of removing abilities like fey presence.
1. I like how the Warlock class and subclass images have a common element of the magic orbs. I'm guessing those are supposed to be the gifts from your Patron. 2. Not a fan of the subclass lvl changes. The whole point of the subclasses are making the Pact with your Patron; how can you gain the gifts from your Patron before you make a pact with your Patron... which is where your magic comes from to begin with? Same with Paladins and Sorcerers. Those three should be Subclass at lvl 1, period. 3. Love the fixes to the Invocations, Subclasses, and especially the new Pact of the Chain Familiars; I'm going to love playing with the Wonderous Sphinx. I also can't wait for the updated Noble Genie down the road.
I always intertwined subclass acquisition into the story for my players (for those that get them post level 1 at least) so for me this is a cool challenge for giving my players great storytelling opportunities now for warlock as well.

Huh. I relieved the pressure of not having enough warlock hexblade spell slots by multiclassing into paladin. Took care of it nicely. Well, and gave the DM fits. But, hey, what are players for, right? 😇
I've never thought of warlocks as 'spooky' they made a deal for power. Think Harry Dresden, he's an arcitypical wizard and warlock mix. He made a deal when he was 16 for the power to save himself. Then later on, after he trains as a wizard he becomes a vassal of the queen of air and darkness
I know Dungeons and Dragons has been getting a lot of stick in recent months but i am really looking forward to buying these books. The creative team clearly have listened and tried to improve the game for the players. Great work guys!
@Morjixxo older content is still compatible, though some might need a small conversion. However, my point was about how often people in the past would dip into Hexblade for hexblade's curse and hex warrior. An extra early feat is even more valuable than that, especially since pact of the blade seems to be getting Cha attacks like Hex Warrior gave.
@@cmdrvimes72 I think Hexblade and especially Bladesinger were a little bit too far away from their main class, and a bit broken. I think they decided to NOT insert them because they are inherently problematic, especially with the new weapon mastery system. They need to see how this new ruleset works and then carefully decide what to do. I don't think there will be a lot of mixing between 5e and 5.5e. They must grant compatibility, but we all know 5e will be replaced by 5.5e
Think of it like this. You've made a pact with a demon, but he doesn't want to give you his cool demon-specific tricks until you've proven yourself. You get generic warlock tricks in the meantime. Personally I'm probably going to choose pact of the chain 90% of the time now because I like the idea that your pact familiar is an agent of your patron keeping an eye on you. Edit: Or you could have a patron in mind, but are building up your occult power enough to be noticed by them. Y'know, like a cultist.
The idea is that you don't need to have sold your soul yet, you just reached out for power and Eldritch Blast is just bait on the snare, enticing you into signing the contract.
The patron gives you generic warlock powers at levels 1-2. At level 3, you start getting patron-specific abilities. :) (The same argument has always applied to paladin oaths. 23:35 say it, say it, say it, yes! The warlock is arguably the most iconic class, and these are great changes! Getting more spells without rests and the changes to the invocations are all great!
I want the alternate covers, but i want the digital versions as well. Seems kind of lame that I'll either have to buy two physical copies of the PHB, or buy the alternate covers when they come out and then have to pay full price for the digital copies. This should be something they fix.
did no one else catch that oathless paladin and domainless cleric drop? im not sure if he was suppose to say that or not, thos classes arnt in the new players handbook, my guess is that they are going to be in the new dmg.
I am optimistic here, hoping that things worked out. Warlocks had a lot of back and forth in the playtests. I love warlocks, but their spell list can be extremely limiting, especially when trying to upcast and half the invocations were not worth using.

My rogue/warlock rarely uses EB. I'm more of an upfront warlock, with a class that's not really made for it. Lol.
@@haerdalis84You have to understand that Eldritch Blast doesn't add the charisma modifier normally, but an Invocation does, and that invocation can be used on any cantrip now.
@@elegantmonkey6111 he mean that eldritch blast get to add the charisma modifier 3 times instead of once
I am so glad that celestial bois graduated to PHB, they are my favourite
Human warlock can get 3 origin feats
At level 1
Can't wait to see what the origin feat list actually contains!
I thik human variant isn't a thing in 2024.
@@gaelofariandel6747 already confirmed Humans get additional 1lvl feat.
@@gaelofariandel6747 it’s not called a “variant” anymore, but now baseline humans do still get an origin feat, in addition to the one that everyone starts with at level 1. At least, that’s how it worked in the UA. They didn’t clarify this in the UA-cam video, so we’ll have to wait for the book release to see if they kept that or not
Favorite class. Hope they did my Boi proud. Wonder if they'll keep the three casting stat options. Probably not, but it'd be cool if they did.
Not likely it was dropped in the most recent playtest version.
If they did to warlock the same they did to others, they changed almost nothing since last UA
Maybe they'll do the stat swapping in a future book if it isn't here. They didn't say in this video.
I really wish they would too but I’m pretty sure it got poor feedback which is really odd to me.
Tbh, the flavor text of a warlock about being seekers of eldritch knowledge says intelligence faster to me but 🤷♂️
I really wanted my Intlock to be supported sadge
Wait.... if agonizing and repelling blast affect any cantrip:
Pact of the Blade
Booming Blade
Agonizing Blast
Repelling Blast
Pact Greatsword
17 CHA
Cast Hex, then Booming Blade, 2d6 + 3, +3 AGAIN for Agonizing, a d6 for hex, and pushes the enemy back.
Next two levels, take Paladin for smite, add 2d8, and use feat to go to 18 CHA for a total of:
4d6 + 3d8 + 12.
My favourite class just keeps getting better 😍
Glad pact boon is getting rolled into evocations so we can choose multiple options; it's always pained me to choose only one.
For years I've longed to use both Chain and Tome, or Chain and Blade. I will finally be able to!
I am impressed for this one : radical improvements, much more options, while really remaining the same class.
@@redhoodie4111 yeah, it’s the better option for warlocks which is the subject of this video.
Still wish they kept the choose-your-Spellcasting-Ability from the UA.
I made a Ranger Warlock multiclass with that and was incredibly fun as a demon hunter like character. I was very saddened when they changed it.
Same, that was my most hyped feature they were adding, being able to flavor into Intelligence or Wisdom was such a good change.
@@Koranthusyeah I also think that it should have been a core feature for all classes because it would have been so fun for multiclassing

I know it’s unlikely, but I really want Hexblade (or a comparable Shadowfell patron) available in the PHB. It’s the pact I use.
Alternatively a new feat (or possibly Warlock invocation) called Cantrip master:
'Taking this feat gives a bonus to Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma.
This book might be worth getting just for the warlock changes tbh, especially the subclass changes
I guess I kinda just dont understand where the power comes from from level 1-2 now)
The idea I really like that I heard is that you still pick your subclass at level one, but you have to _earn_ the power of your patron
(The same argument has always applied to paladin oaths. You don't narratively just start swearing an oath and getting magic powers from that at level 3; you just get abilities of that particular flavor at that level, but narratively, you've always gotten those abilities from your convictions.)
right, it feels like they gave min-maxers the wheel on this one and ignored any narrative elements :(
I think Warlock might be the class I’m most excited for!

Please tell us that Shadow of Moil is a bonus action. Would fit the theme you discussed in the Paladin video, about spells that “turn on a condition”.
That spell is already OP enough as is haha. It’s fine as an action. Making it a bonus action would make it better than most other spells of that level, almost mimicking foresight (a 9th level spell) for combat purposes.

We really appreciate the creative care and fan engagement in creating the new PHB! The results are exciting!
Love how they keep talking about all the cool origin feats and compare alert and lucky to the skilled feat as if they're equally as good.
@@Bacon_and_Busch why is it banned when things like sharpshooter, crossbow expert, great weapon master exist, elven accuracy, polearm master aren't?
It's cause they nerfed lucky it just lets you give yourself advantage or an enemy disadvantage instead so it doesn't grant super advantage or completely ignore disadvantage anymore
Depending how prevalent level prereqs will be, it might be handy to sort invocations by level.

How does choosing a patron at lvl 3 make any sense whatsoever if the warlock’s power comes from having a patron? Makes no narrative sense.
either you don't know specifically who your patron is until level 3 OR, more likely, that's when your patron starts giving you some of their specific magic.
Lvl. 1&2 is the trail phase.
The patron gives you generic warlock powers at levels 1-2. At level 3, you start getting patron-specific abilities. :)
(The same argument has always applied to paladin oaths. You don't narratively just start swearing an oath and getting magic powers from that at level 3; you just get abilities of that particular flavor at that level, but narratively, you've always gotten those abilities from your convictions.)
It doesn't make sense *to you* because you probably didn't take the time to read and understand the warlock entry in the PHB.
Their magic doesn't come from a patron, it comes from their generalized research of magic. They cut a deal with a patron to get specific power.
Subclass at level 3 makes zero sense with warlock. How do u have a pact before a patron. A deal without a dealmaker makes no sense at all.
Archfey sounds so freaking fun! Just bouncing around the game board in a constant game of “you can’t catch me” is peak flavor.
Stack that with the Eladrin too.
At one point in the playtests it was 3, 6, 10 and 14 for everyone, which would have been great for the rogue and nice for multiclassing
That didn't survive even until the next playtest and I don't know why
I think level 2, 6, 10, 14 and 18 would be great for subclasses. Evenly spread out and happens on even levels, odd levels already have spell slot level increases so those are already very powerful for some classes.
@@shadow-faye I suspect that the uniform subclass level progression tested poorly because (a) people hated Warlock/Cleric/Sorcerer subclasses being moved off of level one, (b) people were afraid that it would make it too difficult to convert older subclasses, and (c) it meant that certain capstone abilities had to be nerfed or deleted.
@@daviddalrymple2284 they had fields for people to explain what specifically they didn't like, so that first one is definitely not a factor here
The difficulty with that be that rogue and fighter get additional ASIs/feats compared to other classes.
I've always thought a Fiend pact of the blade should have worked better. Glad to see they shifted things so you aren't basically locked into Hexblade
Don't know if I like the subclass coming up from level 1, for the same reason I don't like it with sorcerer: where you get your powers from feels very intrinsic to those classes, you're not really walking around for 2.9 levels as a warlock before learning where you're getting those powers from
Yess they’re going into the spellcasters!!! I’m so excited about this new book!

Ranger- Oh really, which one?
@@CGCommando82 I like that.

Lvl 1-2 sorcerer could be you just realizing you have magic. Level 3 is discovering where your magic actually comes from.

I'm just hoping that they add the ability to make homebrew classes on DDB when they re-haul the website for these books
So I’m guessing choosing your casting stat didn’t stick around? 😢That was the one feature I was really hoping for.

He also made temporary pact with demon in a coin, but ends up breaking that pact and goes the opposite why with an angel instead.

The creative team clearly have listened and tried to improve the game for the players. Great work guys!
I really like the sound of blessing of the old ones, but boy does it lean into multiclass dips even more than hexblade.
There is no Hexblade sublcass yet in the new version.
Why is it that everytime there's a Fae subclass it's always you get teleportation and you can't be charmed
Trying to decipher the species on that class art. My best three guesses are Gnome, Tiefling on the short side, or a really short Elf.
Forest Gnome.
@@JerodLycett Why Forest Gnome and not a Rock Gnome?
If Cleric = service while Warlock = negotiation; then Celestial Warlock = All Dogs Go to Heaven movie, right?
I was thinking something like The Angel Islington
“We know Warlocks felt constrained about using their magic from short rest to short rest” *laughs in rage as every other casting class*
Warlock in cover art: “That’s one, one soul. Two, two souls. Three, three fabulous souls reaped, ah, ah, ahhhhh”
🎻Sad Artificer enthusiast violin noises🎻
I can't wait to bring back my old Halfling Archfey Warlock with these changes.
So…how does deciding who you’ve sold your soul to for eldritch power work from first level forward when YOU CAN’T CHOOSE UNTIL 3rd LEVEL?!
Same as paladin oath. Use you imagination :P
Think of it as making a deal at lvl one, then renegotiate later....?
The patron gives you generic warlock powers at levels 1-2. At level 3, you start getting patron-specific abilities. :)
(The same argument has always applied to paladin oaths. You don't narratively just start swearing an oath and getting magic powers from that at level 3; you just get abilities of that particular flavor at that level, but narratively, you've always gotten those abilities from your convictions.)
This is awesome. i just started playing a Warlock (Deep One reflavored to Auril) in a friend's game and was afraid I'd get bored of just EBing a ton!
So i can make a mime using great old one patron!
Normally it takes level 6 in aberrant mind sorcerer to become a mime (if only its level 6 feature removed verbal components on a cantrip)
23:35 say it, say it, say it, yes!
The warlock is arguably the most iconic class, and these are great changes! Getting more spells without rests and the changes to the invocations are all great!
I'm begging to please post the Warlock article. You posted the druid one with the druid video I'm dying to read the Warlock notes.
My Bardlock is going to love this
I want the alternate covers, but i want the digital versions as well.
Lvl1 dips in warlock just became a lot more popular.
"Great mystic arcanum feature", also known as "why everyone multiclasses out of warlock after 10th level".
I love making warlocks like they're build-a-bears
Love the new Warlock!! I wanna play one… Now!
So Archey Warlock stole the Eladrin key feature?
I am optimistic here, hoping that things worked out. Warlocks had a lot of back and forth in the playtests. I love warlocks, but their spell list can be extremely limiting, especially when trying to upcast and half the invocations were not worth using.
