  • If you have ever, even for a second, considered competition shooting, please watch this video.
Quinn and Trevor talk through the differences between USPSA and IDPA and what Shadow Systems guns will fit in each category. The central message here is "go for it!" You don't need fancy equipment or specialized ammunition to start. Trevor started with a GI .45 and 7 round magazines. Competition is the fastest way to learn. Find a USPSA or IDPA match near you and check it out!

IDPA was created by Bill Wilson, after seeing the success of USPSA. He needed a place to sell his very expensive 1911s. Match and rules geared for single stacks. But still pretty good practice.

For guys who carry and haven't competed, I strongly recommend competing with your normal carry gear, just with more magazines. Test your skills under pressure. Don't go there to with the match. Go there to win the gunfight. I use my concealed carry gear and compete in Open with my War Poet, so I ain't winning any matches any time soon. 😁

As a firearm instructor, I've been doing this exact thing for the last 25 years and I STRONGLY encourage students and anyone I know who carries to "compete" for organized trigger time.👍

Great advice man! I 100% agree about training with what you walk around with in your day to day life. Competing with that gear insures that if you do have to use your tools in a real life situation it won’t be the first time you’ve done it with speed under pressure. Sure the pressure isn’t the same but it’s a great way to induce stress you would otherwise struggle to incorporate.

I’ve shot now twice in USPSA CO with a P365XL with EPS from AlWB in every day clothes. I also do the same in Production with a stock internals P-01. It’s a great way to test your carry gear. I quickly discovered my Neo mag holder was garbage.

Exactly 💯. My EDC is my M&P 2.0 4.25 C.O.R.E with ported barrel & Holosun 507comp green dot. The factory ports place me in open class. But I shoot AIWB from concealment, strictly to become more comfortable & proficient with actual carry.

FYI, IDPA is now 15 rounds in Stock service pistol. You can also use comps in ESP and Carry optics as long as the comp is integrated into the gun, no screw on comps. The DRP is legal in both those divisions, stated by our state coordinator. I shoot my DRP in carry optics, My DR920L in Stock service and my Mr920 in CCP. Love em!

@@bretwalley4673, the only rules I see in the book are below. I know at one time the rule specifically said "screw on or Pinned comps are not allowed" but I don't see a rule stating that screw on comps are allowed. But our AC says they rewrote the rule saying all it has to do is fit the box, so I guess it's kind of a grey area now... go figure.
A.2.1.5 Firearms originally sold as compensated/ported models may be used in ESP with noncompensated/ported barrels installed.
A.2.3.2 Compensated and ported barrels that are incorporated into the firearm

Once again asking for a steel framed or otherwise heavyweight DR920 :) The DR920 is awesome for Carry Optics, and it's without a doubt the best gun for it in its weight class, but it is a little on the light side lol.

+1 on this. The DR920L is even lighter than the G34 and without the same options to add weight (eg stuffing tungsten putty into the hollow of the grip). But I think SS is too focused on duty and carry roles.

Large dots can cover the A zone at long distance. Small dots have enough settings to make it even too bright and large to use in the sun. If you are staring at your dot, you are doing it wrong. However at longer distance you may find longer confirmation required. Go small.

Whats the point of major during a match?

    • @kenwickes2497
      @kenwickes2497 10 місяців тому

Scoring zones get more points. A zone is 5 pts per shot minor and major. C zone is 3 points minor, 4 points major. D zone is 1 point minor, 2 points major. Difference is due to the power factor being double what +p ammo is vs. factory level (125pf = minor), 145 pf is +p ammo, (165pf = major) NEVER USE MAJOR in a factory gun (most guns). It'll blow it up.

Now you have to compete against people that have no responisibilities. They shoot 52 weekends a year, 3 times during the week, and in between sit at a reloading bench.

All the STUPID "rules and regs" in IDPA is exactly why I don't bother. Making different divisions is as easy as typing a few paragraphs.🙄 My EDC is generally a 356xl with a Wilson Combat grip module, red dot and holds 15+1. I have shot it in USPSA matches(mostly getting ready for the Sig EDC championship) and that little sucker runs like a sewing machine! If you carry a certain thing a certain way, why TF would you PRACTICE shooting any other way? Answer: YOU SHOULDN'T! It creates training scars and bad habits. My brother in law used to go to cowboy action matches. I took him to the range and when he drew his 1911 he was looking for the hammer with his left thumb every time out of HABIT.

I have gone to a few matches to observe and learn a bit. Did not like what I saw. Too many people with WAY too much time on their hands. 40 years ago, or even 30 years ago, it was less of a "spend-as-much-money-as-humanly-possible" situation as it is now. You would win this month, and maybe I would win next month. Now it is the same five guys in places one through five every time. Kind of defeats the purpose. Your mileage may vary.
