This is another great video. Nice to see someone building Antennas and working hard at making sure they’re built correctly.
This has such great benefit to new you hams or people who are interested in building their own antennas. Great work my friend. I’d like to use this video as well. I’ll be sure and credit your video as well as a link to your channel in the description for all your hard work here. Thank you again for everything you do. Keep it up!
Larry
I like doing build videos for that exact reason, glad you liked the video Larry 👍
Love your matter of fact delivery! Great Videos! Thank you Sir!
Thanks Neubert, glad you like the videos 👍
Always appreciate your antenna vids. Thanks!
Thanks for checking it out Jason 👍
As always, another great video man.
Thanks.
Thanks NoCode 👍
I completely forgot you did this Ape. Currently have one in build and was looking to see who else has done it. Great job again!
It’s a great antenna, I saw the pics of yours and looking forward to the video 👍
Another quality lecture from the Professor.
Lol, thanks Philip 👍
Another great video
Thank you sir 👍
Solid build. Thanks 👍
Thanks for watching Locksnut 👍
So good it made me subscribe.
Awesome, thanks Christopher 👍
Great job!
Thanks HRD!
Great job, I thought that little antenna did great, it really killed it on 20m.
Thanks Thump, I’m glad I decided to build it. Thanks for the tip on the L/C meter 👍
Nice one.
Thanks Bob 👍
Thanks for sharing this.
Having an antenna with almost the same configuration but on a t240-43 - for some reason I can't get the 10m to work with better swr (yet), but this gave me insights :)
Thanks for watching Anton 👍
Thank you ☘️
Thanks for watching 👍
This video is SOLID HAM GOLD.
Haha, thanks Tom 👍
Ok smoking ape, i was ragchewing with a friend tonight, as soon as i told him i was building the shorty forty, he laughed and said from smoking ape... lol i said yes, if this thing works I ll be presenting before the radio club , and we will be calling it the "Smoking Ape" shorty Forty! Thanks brother... hope to hear you on the air! NS9T
Hey Hammer, that is awesome. Good luck with the presentation 👍
Always Enjoy Your Videos. Thanks de AB8AS
Thanks Alan, glad you like them 👍
Nice idea to use the shock cord to reduce stress on the antenna wire!
Hey Levy, it does work well. Not sure where I got the idea.
Thank you!
🤜🏻👍🤛🏻♡♡♡
Thanks 🙏
Great video. I need to build a coil to get 80 on my EFHW.
Do it Shane! This was a cool project that I had been wanting to try for a while 👍
Alright Ape, good video👍, but since I’m already subscribed and notified, what would make me happy is you put that scope on fast mode bro lol
No son! You need to slow your roll! 👍
@@TheSmokinApe “got the need, the need for Speed!”
Slow and steady won the race
@@TheSmokinApe I’ve heard that before... In typing class I believe.
Thanks! Need a video on making that un un
Thanks Hammer. The is a 49:1, here are some videos I have on that type of UnUn: This one is the exact same ua-cam.com/video/YHSaiGaTxK4/v-deo.html this one is with a larger toroid ua-cam.com/video/KuEAYkp-mlk/v-deo.html
Hey you specifically mentioned that you were going to do a test in the video with and without counterpoise and you never did bro! That's what hooked me on the video until the end, because that's the info I need lol ... look if you can, let us know what the receive noise ratio is with and w/o counterpoise, length of counterpoise wire, how's the transmit and SWR before and after, you know ... a test! thanks in advance man it would seriously help
I spoke about it at the 6:00 mark, sorry it wasn't more clear.
@@TheSmokinApe Oh man I'm seriously sorry I don't know how I drifted past that! Thanks for all you do in this great channel that literally covers every topic
Haha, no worries brother👍 I was like damn, I meant to add that. We the filming and editing stuff does get lost. Thanks for watch 🏅
Ok that enough with small antennas I want to see sum challenge in the next one 😉 I want to see a 160m dipole at 80’ height ☺️ and to really mix things up a balanced feedline 😬☺️
Lol, we’ll see Kevin 👍
Hi Ape,
Well done video. I have all the makings for a vertical 40m EFHW, but may try making a coil to shorten it up. Just waiting for the ground to soften to pound in the mounting post. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Thanks Don, I’d like to get this vertical but I don’t have the trees to pull that off 👍
@@TheSmokinApe Hi Ape,
I was going to make the vertical out of aluminum, but if I try the shorty fourty will use another Spiderbeams fiberglass pole.
One of these days I need to pick up a Spiderbeam
No doubt the EFHW is probably the best compromise (not meaning it negatively) multi band antenna. I've still to build one or maybe 2. I want to see if 2 x EFHW for 20m can be phased.
I use them all the time, very handy antennas 👍
But Ape, you got a pretty good tune on 12M also. Nice antenna
Yeah, funny how it works out like that. This was a project that I had been thinking about for a while and I started to get the itch to build an antenna so here we are. Thanks for watching Don 👍
I get Slavko and Janez in the log regularly!
Awesome 👍
Hahaha, me too. S51DX is that??
Thanks for another great video. Unless I missed what size of capacitor did you use on the 49:1 UN UN?
100pF and I am pretty sure 3Kv
Hello, and Thanks for the video/info. I wanted to ask you when you tuned the 20 meter did you tune it with out the coil?
Hey Andy, I did tune the 20m part without the coil.
Hello, I just wanted to thank you. Made my coil yesterday and today I'm on 40m for field day
That’s awesome Andy, good luck for FD 👍
Hey @TheSmokinApe this looks like a nice project. In terms of performance, would you recommend it for a beginner ham?
Yeah, I've been happy with the antenna and it wasn't overly complex to build. It's a rewarding project.
Would you get any significant changes in SWR if you put the swapped the antenna around and put the transformer on your mast and the other end attached towards the ground? Just curious….
From my experience these transformers work better near the ground. If you mount it in the air, I am sure you could adjust the element if necessary.
It's an interesting antenna, and a nice build by you. I'd be curious how it compares to a 35 or 41 foot end fed wire with a 9:1 match box. I might have to build one of these for experimentation. Nicely done video.
Thanks CWB! I actually use a 9:1 often as well, both at 35.5 and 41 feet. I’m a fan of End Fed wire antennas in general 👍
@@TheSmokinApe I use those two lengths myself for a vertical configuration and they work quite well, and I use longer lengths for a sloping or horizontal configuration. I also like end fed antennas of the many varieties. I think they are underrated and I've found them to be more efficient than many would have you believe. I likely always have one around in some form.
@@CWB-RF I like them because the are quick and easy to deploy, multi banded and stealthy 👍
Hi, thank you for these videos, interesting and well done. I like your 3d printed case, please may you indicate where to find the .stl or .obj project or its precise name? I searched on Thingiverse and I din't find it.
I just looked over there and I can't seem to find it, that sucks. They do have a few other designs that might do the trick.
Wat about FT 82-43 toroid winding detail ?
Would it be ok to use a different wire at the short end? They are both made of copper but have a slight different dimension.
It should be fine, good luck with the build 👍
Ok i just about got this built... what is the minimum heights at each end... youll have to excuse my ignorance of wire antennas, ty sir.
I typically have mine with the UnUn about 3' off the ground and the end about 30' up. It can be mounted in a variety of configs 👍
Hello Smokin, what is that design board in the background of your video? I have seen variations of them used when designing a project. Just don't know what they are called or where to get them.
I got it years ago off Amazon, it’s an Alvin cutting mat 👍
@@TheSmokinApe Perfect! I have the entire product line on my screen now!
Know this is an old one, but do have a question- looking for the math for determining the "extra" length- say I've got a traditional 66' 40m EFHW, and I want to extend it to 60m band. Where do I find the equations for inductance and extra wire length needed?
Hey Dennis. I’ve only seen designs for 40 and 80m. Pacific66 has a bunch of online coil calculators that might be able to help you out…
Looks like a cool project. But you don’t explain how to make the coil!!! Can’t try your idea if I don’t know how to make that coil or, apparently somehow you tested it for induction Never did that before. Are there instructions for this project anywhere? I have a 49/1 transformer wrapped around 3 torroids from the EFHW project going around You Tube. Just not enough room in the attic. 34 ft. So I have an EF 20 meter antenna up there and it works great. 40 meters would make my day, and the way you did it will mean it’ll fit up there! Just need the details! Thx Dave N9DMS
The coil build video is in the description, I mentioned it twice in the video. Good luck with the project this has been a great antenna for me.
@@TheSmokinApe Got it Thanks. Don't know how I missed it but I did. Thanks again, Dave N9DMS
the highest i can get in my location is about 25' on one end and about 18' on the other end... will this work half way decent ot no way of telling until i just do it?
It should work fine, give it a try 👍
Does anyone have a link to or name of the video where the 49:1 unun was made? I'm also looking for the STL file.
Thanks!
I got the STL file off www.thingiverse.com/ I don’t know if it is still up or not. The 49:1 was assembled by me, I’m planning a build video 👍
@@TheSmokinApe Awesome, thank you!
Gonna work on 2m,70cm ?
I doubt it, didn’t try. I use it on; 10m, 20m and 40m 👍
How much doing does the antenna have?
Sorry Spud, not sure I understand the question
@@TheSmokinApe It's just a term Cal uses from time to time: ua-cam.com/video/Svyc967BxLY/v-deo.html
Oh lol, let me break out the doing meter 👍
It's a trap!
Cool antenna!
Haha, thanks Michael. It was a fun project for sure 👍
@@TheSmokinApe I'm glad that coil worked out, but it looked by the book so you are rocking.
I hated coils at one time, no longer.
I will say rolling that coil was a pain, glad I did it though. The whole time I was like this better work!
Can I do this with a 9:1 instead?
The values would be different and you need a tuner with a 9:1, with this you don’t for a 49:1
@TheSmokinApe ok 👍 I have a 991a and a ft 840 with ldgz100plus atu. The wire is 72 ft sloped with a 17.5 ft counter poise. Can receive great but cannot transmit with out high swr like 5+
The LDG won't tune it?
@TheSmokinApe I don't have a cable for the tuner to connect to the radios interface connection. I will try on the 991a tonight for the local 20 meter net.
@@lonewolfe666 you should have no problem with the tuner. It might have auto sensing so you don’t “need” the cable.
What guage of wire is this? 14?
Hey Hammer, the element is 18g the toroid is wrapped with 16g and the coil I believe is 22g.
@@TheSmokinApe Hey thanks man, love the videos, great job at explaining and demonstrating.
Thanks!
Looks like Ape's got it dialed for playing on 40, 20, 10, 19 and even the superbowl-6. Can I get a 10-4 there? jk (Thanks HRD)
Lol, thanks for checking in VNE 👍
"Small spaces" is a very relative term. When one lives in an apartment, or as in my case a townhouse with a small patio, in a HOA community,
your "small spaces" reference certainly doesn't apply.
